  • George Clooney called White House to blast Biden for calling wife’s work on Israel ‘outrageous’

George Clooney called White House to blast Biden for calling wife’s work on Israel ‘outrageous’

Hollywood superstar George Clooney reportedly rang up one of President Joe Biden’s top aides to complain about the president’s criticism of the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) warrants against Israeli leaders — a case his wife, Amal Clooney, worked on, Washington Post has reported after talking to three people familiar with the conversation.

Clooney called Steve Ricchetti, counselor to the president, to blast Biden’s condemnation of arrest warrants sought by ICC prosecutors for Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and especially his use of the word “outrageous” to criticise the court’s decision.

His wife, Amal Clooney, is an International Human Rights Lawyer and runs the Clooney Foundation for Justice. She said in a statement that the prosecutor’s office had enlisted her to help with the investigation, asking her to review evidence of suspected war crimes and provide legal analysis. The Clooney Foundation for Justice published the statement, which said the team’s legal findings were “unanimous.” ICC prosecutor Karim Khan announced on May 20 that he was seeking to charge Netanyahu, Gallant, Hamas leader Yehiya Sinwar, and two other top Hamas leaders with war crimes.

“I do not accept that any conflict should be beyond the reach of the law, nor that any perpetrator should be above the law,” Amal Clooney wrote in the statement. “So I support the historic step that the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has taken to bring justice to victims of atrocities in Israel and Palestine,” she added.

Washington Post revealed that the actor was “upset” about the administration’s initial openness to imposing sanctions on the ICC because his wife might be subjected to the penalties. Clooney has long been known for backing Democrats and is due to appear at a Biden campaign fundraiser in Los Angeles.

The concerns expressed by the actor spread throughout Biden’s campaign as some officials were worried that he would withdraw from participating in the high-profile fundraiser, which will also feature former president Barack Obama, late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel, and actress Julia Roberts.
However, both the White House and Clooney declined to comment on the matter.

In 2020, George Clooney donated more than $500,000 to Biden’s campaign effort and co-hosted a virtual fundraiser for him that raised $7 million.

  • Govt tables controversial NAB & Election ordinances before NA

Govt tables controversial NAB & Election ordinances before NA

The federal government tabled the Election (Amendment) Ordinance 2024 and National Accountability (Amendment) Ordinance 2024 on Thursday through a supplementary agenda with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) calling the move “politically motivated.”

The amendments in the NAB law would increase the remand period from 14 days to 40 days; whereas amendments in the election law would allow the government to appoint retired judges to the election tribunals – a move already challenged in Islamabad and Lahore high courts.

PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council Chief Whip Aamir Dogar strongly criticised the proposed ordinances saying that the government was tabling them because it was afraid of Imran Khan.

Interestingly, Dogar pointed out that in April 2023 the PDM government reduced the period of physical remand from 90 days to 14 days but now it is trying to change its own previous amendments.

  • Khan tells Supreme Court that country under unannounced martial law

Khan tells Supreme Court that country under unannounced martial law

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan on June 6 told Supreme Court judges that the country was facing an “unannounced martial law” during the hearing of the NAB amendments case hearing.

Khan also talked about the “victimisation” he had to face since his ouster from power in April 2022.

The jailed PTI founder appeared before the Supreme Court’s five-member bench via video link from Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, where has been incarcerated since his conviction in the Toshakhana case last year.

The SC bench headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa and comprising Justice Aminuddin, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi heard the case.

Interestingly, Khan quoted India’s example during his argument that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was released on bail ahead of the Indian elections to run his campaign.

Furthermore, Khan expressed dissatisfaction with the top court’s judgement rejecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s government plea requesting the live streaming of the case saying to CJP Isa, “You wrote [in the judgment] that I did political point scoring during the last hearing. I did not get it, what political scoring did I resort to?”

CJP replied that a judge does not owe an explanation to anyone and that he can “file a review petition.”

Criticising alleged political victimisation, the PTI chairman suggested that the Supreme Court should appoint a NAB chairman.

“When opposition and government fail to evolve consensus on the name of NAB chairman appointment then a ‘third umpire’ makes the decision,” he said, adding that the NAB is working under the “third umpire”.

“Solve the problems by sitting in parliament. This country needs to move forward,” the CJP said to Khan.

  • Ab ki baar, 400 nahin hua paar; Why did Modi falter in Indian elections?

Ab ki baar, 400 nahin hua paar; Why did Modi falter in Indian elections?

Elections in 2024 are surprising, to say the least. Many polls across the globe have given a jolt to political pandits, dismantling their expectations. Be it in Pakistan or in neighbouring India; the results sent a shock wave among observers. In India, particularly, the result defied exit polls and set a precedent of what is called the power of vote.

While the expected Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, was on a country-wide tour titled “Bharat Joro Yatra,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leading party, BJP, were conniving for a change in the constitution.  Campaigning for a third time in the office, “400 paar” was the slogan Modi chanted all along. With more than 65 percent voter turnout and a six-week-long grueling process of polls amid the heatwave, the climax showcased the fruit of the exhaustive exercise. The total number of seats won by the ruling party was 240, far behind the magic number of 272, and it lost 63 seats compared to the election of 2019. Economist and author Parakala Prabhakar called this “a very clear tight slap on PM’s face,” but what led to the results?

In the span of the last five years, the BJP government led by Narendra Modi outrightly showed hate against minorities, especially Muslims, and promoted the saffron-tainted movement of Hindutva. It started off with the revocation of the Special Status of Kashmir, followed by the Citizen Amendment Act, and culminated with the inauguration of Ram Mandir.

303 seats in 2019 enabled BJP to strip Kashmiris of their statehood on August 5, 2019, because it was seen as the biggest hurdle in the drive for development in the region. However, in the garb of this modernization, the aim was to alter the disputed area’s demographics eventually.

With CAA, the Modi government further pushed Muslims to the periphery. This “fundamentally discriminatory” piece of law endangered the citizenship of a large number of Muslims in the country. It declared them illegal immigrants, but the Modi government remained unfazed in the face of all criticism.

The mishandling of the pandemic, coupled with the high unemployment rate of eight percent, proved to be a catalyst, but it was the largest farmer’s protest in Punjab that turned out to be a major blow. Millions on the road, the police crackdown on protestors, and the rigidity of the government made headlines all across the globe. Resultantly, Congress dominated the polls in Punjab with a high voter turnout of 62.80 percent.

Islamophobic rhetoric, anti-Dalit sentiment, a spiraling economy, and unconstitutional motives of the sitting government resulted in the BJP’s defeat in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, the two most significant states.

The party of “saffron parakeets” kept on ignoring the pulse of the nation and inaugurated Ram Mandir with glitz and glamour in Ayodhya, above the ruins of the demolished Babri Masjid. Modi proudly claimed that the Mandir will be a “temple of national consciousness”. The voters ironically consciously rejected him. Though the BJP will again form the government under the umbrella of the National Democratic Alliance, this will be a coalition government, weak at its core and unable to execute the idea of changing the system of governance from Parliamentary to Presidential.

Although it is true to democratic traditions, the credit for this stupendous result goes to the voices of reason, who relentlessly stood in the way of Modi’s aim to establish his “taana shahi”.  YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, who has been named by renowned publications as one of the “factors,” made it his mission to create awareness of all the inconsistencies in the election process, scandals in Modi’s governance, and the wildly objectionable things Modi has said and done. His videos were watched by a whooping number of 476 million people, got screened in some areas while he flexed as the “power of the common man”. Some journalists like Rana Ayuub and Karan Thapar and writers like Arundhati Roy chose to call a spade a spade and will go down in history for being on the right side.

With the coalition government in place, will there be a new more introspective Modi or a rather aggressive one? It is yet to be seen, but he surely wouldn’t be the same as he was in the last five years.

  • Justice Minallah says live streaming of Khan’s appearance in court not against law

Justice Minallah says live streaming of Khan’s appearance in court not against law

Supreme Court Justice Athar Minallah on June 5 issued a dissenting note on the majority verdict against the petition seeking live streaming of the hearing of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) amendment case, stating that there was “no substantive reason” to deny the public the right to have access to court proceedings.

In a 13-page long document, the judge asserted that “Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi is the founder and undisputed leader of a major political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI).” Therefore live streaming his court appearances wasn’t against the law.

The development came after the Supreme Court released a detailed verdict on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s petition last week, stating that broadcasting the court proceedings of cases involving politicians can be used for political “point-scoring”.

Gangsters were planning to use minors to kill Salman Khan: Mumbai Police

In a shocking revelation, notorious Indian gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar were reportedly planning to use minors to assassinate Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. Mumbai police unveiled the chilling plot days after foiling another attempted attack on the superstar at his Panvel farmhouse.

According to Indian news agencies, the Navi Mumbai Police have been actively investigating the matter and recently uncovered a video call conversation between Ajay Kashyap, a Lawrence Bishnoi gang member, and Dogar, an alleged accomplice from Pakistan. The conversation revealed that sharpshooters trained under Anmol Bishnoi and Rohit Godara are strategically positioned across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Raigad, and Gujarat. These sharpshooters, following orders from Goldy Brar, have been instructed to use minors to attack Khan.

The police also disclosed that 60 to 70 gang members are deployed to monitor the movements of the ‘Tiger 3’ star. A man named John has been specifically tasked with providing a vehicle for the operation.

In light of this development, a case has been registered against 17 identified individuals, including Lawrence Bishnoi, his brother Anmol Bishnoi, gang member Sampat Nehra, Goldy Brar, Ajay Kashyap alias Dhananjay Tapesing, Sukha Shooter, Sandeep Bishnoi alias Gaurav Bhatia, Wasim China, Dogar, and others at Panvel Town police station.

The video call also discussed plans to acquire weapons such as AK-47s, M-16s, AK-92s, and Zigana pistols for the assassination. The gang had conducted detailed reconnaissance of Khan’s travel routes, including railway stations, rickshaw stands, and the Panvel bus stand.

Despite Salman Khan’s use of a bulletproof vehicle, sources indicate that the gangsters plan to ambush and shoot him near his farmhouse using AK-47 rifles. The Mumbai police continue to investigate and monitor the situation closely to ensure Khan’s safety.

Sindh tourism minister wants Kartarpur-like religious corridors in province

Sindh Tourism Minister Zulfiqar Ali Shah has proposed on Thursday that religious corridors like those in Kartarpur in Punjab be established in the province to facilitate the people of Hindu and Jain faiths.

During an event in Dubai, the minister shared his vision of promoting tourism in Sindh, proposing that the corridor could be established in Umarkot and Nagarparkar, both cities with a rich historical heritage and multiple Jain temples, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the profound history of these places.

He stressed that many Hindus and Jains from India are interested in visiting Sindh.

The provincial minister also suggested that the Sindh government could start a weekly flight from India to Sukkhur or Larkana for religious tourists.

The minister added that Shri Shiv Mandir is one of the old Hindu temples located in Umarkot. He further explained that some people believe it is almost 2000 years old.
