    ‘Taliban has huge presence on Twitter, yet I am silenced’: Trump launching social media platform TRUTH

    Former United States (US) President Donald Trump announced he would launch his own social media platform, TRUTH Social, saying, “We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American president has been silenced. This is unacceptable,” reports Reuters.

    According to the press release distributed by the Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) and a special acquisition company (SPAC), which form a new company for TRUTH social, Trump’s own social media app, TRUTH Social would “stand up to Big Tech” companies such as Twitter and Facebook that have barred him from their platforms.

    “I am excited to send out my first TRUTH on TRUTH Social very soon. TMTG was founded with a mission to give a voice to all. I’m excited to soon begin sharing my thoughts on TRUTH Social and to fight back against Big Tech,” he said.

    Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms banned Trump from their platforms after hundreds of his supporters rioted at the US Capitol on January 6.

    Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari’s daughter, Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir, criticised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government in a tweet earlier today.

    “If the country was to be run by magic, then why is the money of this nation being wasted on such a large cabinet,” Imaan tweeted.

    “The country is being ridiculed due to witchcraft and you don’t want people to talk about those who practice magic. This will not happen,” she added.

    Shireen Mazari responded to her daughter’s tweet for criticising the government without any proof. “I am ashamed you would resort to such low personalised unsubstantiated attacks esp since as a lawyer u shd know without any proof hurling such accusations is defamation. When all substantive issue-based criticism fails this level of a base personal attack is plain shameful,” the minister tweeted.

    Last week, Maryam Nawaz had also mentioned the use of “magic”.

    “If your magic is so successful, then why don’t you use it for the good of the people?”

    Indian retailer Fabindia withdraws Diwali ad after backlash from Hindu groups

    Indian retailer Fabindia, which sells home furnishings, furniture, clothes and food, has withdrawn an ad about a new Diwali line after backlash from right-wing Hindu groups, reported BBC.

    Social media users accused the ad of using Urdu — a language spoken by many Muslims in India — to celebrate a collection for the Hindu festival of Diwali.

    #BoycottFabIndia trended on Twitter in India on Monday after Fabindia called Diwali “Jashn-e-Riwaaz” (celebration of tradition) in a tweet. Following the tweet, many social media users called for a boycott of the company, claiming that the Urdu phrase had been used to hurt sentiments of the Hindu community.

    A spokesperson from Fabindia told the Times of India newspaper that Jashn-e-Riwaaz was not its Diwali collection.

    The tweet, which went viral on Monday, said: “As we welcome the festival of love and light, Jashn-e-Riwaaz by Fabindia is a collection that beautifully pays homage to Indian culture.” The tweet has since been deleted and the ad has also been withdrawn.

    This is not the first time an Indian brand had to withdraw ads following backlash from right-wing Hindu groups. Last year in October, popular Indian jewellery brand Tanishq had to withdraw an advertisement featuring an interfaith couple after a right-wing backlash on social media.

    A recent advert by clothing brand Manyaavar featuring Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt in a wedding attire also caused a social media furore. The ad, which appeared to question an old tradition (Kanya Daan), received widespread backlash as it was seen as an attack on Hindu wedding rituals.

    A former Facebook employee told US lawmakers that Facebook’s sites and apps “harm children, stoke division and weaken our democracy”, BBC has reported.

    Frances Haugen, a 37-year-old former product manager turned whistleblower said during a US Senate hearing that the company consistently put profit over moral responsibility.

    “The company’s leadership knows how to make Facebook and Instagram safer, but won’t make the necessary changes because they have put their astronomical profits before people,” she said adding, “no one currently holding Mark accountable but himself.”

    Founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg has rejected the accusations, saying recent coverage of painted a “false picture” of the company.

    In a letter to his staff, Zuckerberg said many of the claims “don’t make any sense”, pointing to their efforts in fighting harmful content, establishing transparency and creating “an industry-leading research programme to identify these important issues

    Imran Ahsraf has revealed what he was doing after WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram services were down for more than six hours.

    WhatsApp said in a statement that it was aware that some users were having problems using the app, saying: “We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible.”

    The Ranjha Ranjha Kardi star reacted to this and shared in a tweet that what he did during that phase, “I have switched 25 Wi-Fi passwords in an hour”.

    It should be noted that the services were out for over six hours and shares of Facebook fell almost five percent in the US stock market after being affected by Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp services worldwide.

    Cyclone Gulab: Karachi on high alert as storm nears

    The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a warning to Karachi residents as a cyclone named Gulab nears the Sindh-Makran coast.

    People are advised to keep at a distance from trees, billboards and polls, Director Met Office Sardar Sarfaraz told ARY News.

    Earlier, as per the official notification, the coastal belts had also been warned as the sea conditions would remain very rough with high surge at times till October 3.

    The department also suggested that there will be urban flooding in Karachi, Badin, Thatta, Hyderabad, Dadu, Mirpurkhas, Shaeed Benazirabad, Lasbela, Sonmiani, Ormara, Pasni, Gwadar, Turbat and Jiwani.

    The notification said: “The system is likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours and move northwestwards.”

    However, the Met Office said that the PMD Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, Karachi is closely monitoring the system.

    Visually impaired Saima Saleem raises voice against Indian human rights violations at UNGA

    A visually impaired Pakistani female diplomat Saima Saleem raised her voice against India violating human rights in Indian occupied Kashmir during the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session.

    In her speech, Saima said that India’s violation of human rights in India occupied Jammu and Kashmir are well documented in the two reports of the high commissioner for human rights.

    “Since 5th August 2019, the High Commissioner has urged India to unlock the situation and fully restore the rights that are currently being denied to the people of the occupied territory,” she added.

    She further said that “major human rights organisations including the Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have expressed similar serious concerns about India’s human rights violation including in the occupied territory.”

    “Not surprisingly, Indian authorities have failed to respond to any of these communications.”

    Federal minister for information and broadcasting, Fawad Chaudhry, lauded Saima for highlighting the Kashmir issue.

    Not only the minister but many other social media users appreciated Saima for her speech.

    The Punjab police detained a man on Thursday for harassing three women waiting at a bus stop in Lahore.

    A Twitter user, Hasna Khan Dasti, posted a video that shows a man advancing towards the women who were running away from him.

    Soon after the video did the rounds on social media, the Punjab police shared a picture of the suspect in custody, saying that the police had registered a case and arrested the suspect.

    Since the Minar-e-Pakistan incident, the number of sexual harassment and assault cases has increased up to 300 per cent in Lahore.

    A police report stated that during the past 1.5 months, 642 cases of sexual harassment were registered under sections 354, 354-A and 509-B as compared to the number of incidents up to less than 150 that had been reported before August 14.

    Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shariq Jamal Khan said that the ratio of sexual assault and harassment cases was high in the past but previously people used to avoid registering cases.

    He added that the actions related to the accused in the incident of Greater Iqbal Park have encouraged the women to report such cases. He said that the authorities will take strict action in such cases.
