Coronavirus: Twitter allows staff to work from home ‘forever’

Twitter has told staff that they can work from home “forever” if they wish as the company assesses its future after the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision came as the social media giant said its work-from-home measures during the lockdown had been a success. But it also said it would allow workers to return to the office if they want to when it reopens.

Earlier this month, Google and Facebook said their staff can work from home until the end of the year.

Twitter said: “The past few months have proven we can make that work. So if our employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home and they want to continue to do so forever, we will make that happen.”

Twitter’s blog added that for those who want to return to Twitter’s office the company “will be their warm and welcoming selves, with some additional precautions”.

The San Francisco-based company employs more than 4,000 people across its global offices. It has allowed employees to work from home since March and have decided to reopen its offices probably in September.

Jemima reacts after Amir Mateen tries to give her parenting advice

British journalist, film producer and former wife of Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, Jemima Goldsmith, has reacted to senior Pakistani journalist and analyst Amir Mateen trying to give her what seemed to be parenting advice.

As per the details, Jemima recently tweeted about how her son is relieved that he can now play sports “but only with her [due to the lockdown]”, drawing reactions from Pakistani Twitterati among whom she remains immensely popular even years after her separation with cricketer-turned-politician Imran.

Among netizens reacting to the tweet was Mateen, who said:

“Sad. He should have [a] normal life and pursue his interests,” Mateen tweeted, which did not seem to sit very well with Jemima.

Here’s what Mateen had to say in response:

“It was a joke. [British PM] Boris Johnson announced this eve you can play sports but only with members of your own household,” Jemima said in a subsequent tweet.

In response to which, Mateen made Jemima realise how “she had lived here long enough to understand that even her jokes are taken seriously in Pakistan”.

But all’s well that ends well…

  • White House unfollows Modi on Twitter amid concerns over India’s treatment of minorities

White House unfollows Modi on Twitter amid concerns over India’s treatment of minorities

The White House has unfollowed Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on Twitter, leaving Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi ‘dismayed’ at the American administration’s decision.

Indian media reported on Wednesday that The White House, which has 22 million followers on Twitter, followed the Indian premier till April 11, unfollowed him recently.

“The official Twitter account of White House, the residence and workplace of the president of the US, doesn’t follow Indian PM Narendra Modi anymore on the micro-blogging site,” reported Outlook India.

Modi was the only world leader followed by The White House on Twitter till April 11. Other Indian Twitter accounts unfollowed were those of the president of India, the Indian PM’s Office and the Indian Embassy in Washington D.C.

The move ‘dismayed’ Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi, who urged India’s External Affairs Ministry to take note of the incident.

“I’m dismayed by the “unfollowing” of our President & PM by the White House. I urge the Ministry of External Affairs to take note,” tweeted Gandhi.

The development took place as a US commission recommended India be placed on a list of countries that violate religious freedom.

The US Commission on International Religious Freedom recommended that India be re-designated as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ because of the Modi government’s policies and treatment towards the Muslim population.

“Perhaps the steepest, and most alarming deterioration in religious freedom conditions is in India,” the vice-chair of the USCIRF vice had said after the release of the Commission’s annual report.

The report also recommended 13 other countries to the State Department for designation as “countries of particular concern” because their governments engage in or tolerate “systematic, ongoing, egregious violations of religious freedom”.

These include nine that the State Department designated as CPCs in December last year, which were Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. The five others include India, Nigeria, Russia, Syria, and Vietnam.

    WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

According to reports, the White House has explained that its Twitter handle typically follows the accounts of officials from host countries for a brief period during a presidential trip to retweet their messages in support of the visit.

“The White House Twitter account normally follows senior US government Twitter accounts, and others as appropriate. For example, during the time of a presidential visit, the account typically follows for a short time, the host country’s officials to retweet their messages in support of the visit,” a senior administration official told the Press Trust of India.

Twitter Safety tweeted: “We have broadened our guidance on unverified claims that incite people to engage in harmful activity, could lead to the destruction or damage of critical 5G infrastructure or could lead to widespread panic, social unrest, or large-scale disorder.”

“Our automated systems have challenged more than 3.4 million accounts targeting manipulative discussions around COVID-19,” the tweet further read.

“We’re prioritising the removal of COVID-19 content when it has a call to action that could potentially cause harm,” TechCrunch quoted a spokesperson for Twitter as saying.

With the entire world fighting against coronavirus, many social media domains have made consistent efforts on their part to ensure only relevant remains on their platforms. Earlier, Whatsapp placed a limit on the number of times a message could be forwarded.

Coronavirus: Info Ministry shares fake news about Chinese help, then deletes tweet

In a rather embarrassing development for the government, the Information Ministry has shared fake claims regarding Chinese help for Pakistan amid the outbreak of the new coronavirus — COVID-19 — and later deleted its tweet.

As per the details, the Information Ministry, which is responsible to release government information to the public and international communities, on Sunday in a now-deleted tweet claimed that 200 Chinese doctors had reached Islamabad to help the country fight the coronavirus pandemic.

It also said that China was providing Pakistan with $34 million for treatment of the infected.

The same was tweeted by Radio Pakistan as well.

Since the the national public broadcaster for radio also deleted its tweet, an archived version of it can be viewed here.

Speaking to The Current, an official, on the condition of anonymity, confirmed not only that the two claims were fake, but also that the tweets had been deleted after it was pointed out.

They, however, said that China had given Pakistan $4 million in aid and the claim pertaining to the provision of 300,000 medical face masks besides 10 ventilators was also true.

This was confirmed by Economic Affairs Minister Hammad Azhar as well.

    Taking to Twitter, he wrote:

“They have also undertaken to arrange for much greater number of ventilators,” the minister added.

  • Twitter in the time of corona

Twitter in the time of corona

On March 16, Brooklyn-based author Isaac Fitzgerald tweeted a question to his followers on Twitter asking them to share the object in their home that holds the most significance.

Fitzgerald has been in self-quarantine as a precaution due to recent travel.

He asked Twitter: “What’s the object in your home that means the most to you?” He posted a picture of the sword hanging above his desk, which he says was given to him by the King of Bhutan.

The responses he got were quite interesting. Hundreds of responses poured in: a teacup that belonged to someone’s grandmother. A portrait of a woman’s mother, painted by her 16-year-old son. A World War II lighter that belonged to the grandfather one man had never met.

Fitzgerald says that in a time of social distancing, social media has allowed a new level of sharing stories and memories with each other. “Hopefully some folks took a little comfort in realising the simple fact that their homes are filled with beloved objects,” he said.

  • After intense trolling, Mahira Khan temporarily deactivates Twitter account

After the Khalil ur Rehman Qamar controversy, Mahira Khan took to Twitter to express her views on the issue and women’s rights. She also commented on why the Aurat March is important and why she is going to march on Sunday.

Mahira then, temporarily deactivated her Twitter account, and Twitterati believe it is because of the massive backlash she was facing from twitter trolls about her positive stance on Aurat March.

Mahira had beautifully stated why she was speaking up on behalf of Pakistani women and why there is a need for Pakistani women to be given a voice and a platform.

She however, returned to the social media platform after a little while and hasn’t stated why her account had been deactivated.
