Gold price in Pakistan experiences massive single-day gain of Rs5,700 per tola

In a significant development, gold staged a recovery from its recent five-session decline in Pakistan on Thursday, driven by a surge in the global market.

The domestic market witnessed a notable upswing in gold prices today, surging to Rs218,300 per tola after a massive single-day gain of Rs5,700 per tola.

According to data provided by the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA), the 10-gramme gold price in Pakistan experienced a surge, reaching Rs187,157 after a significant uptick of Rs4,887.

This marks a considerable shift from Wednesday’s scenario, when gold prices in Pakistan witnessed a decline of Rs1,000 per tola.

Internationally, the gold market reflected this positive momentum, setting the rate at $2,052 per ounce with a $20 premium on Thursday. This uptick translated into a $54 increase in the international market, as reported by APGJSA.

Simultaneously, silver rates observed an upward trend, climbing by Rs70 and settling at Rs2,650 per tola.

While these developments unfolded in the precious metal markets, the Pakistan Stock Exchange experienced a tumultuous Wednesday, initially plummeting by over 1,900 points.

Despite the initial setback, the market rebounded, ultimately concluding the business day with a loss of over 1,100 points.

The benchmark KSE-100 index kicked off Thursday’s session on a pessimistic note, extending its downward trajectory to revisit the previous day’s lows of approximately 64,400.

However, buyers intervened, successfully defending this level once again.

The index maintained a rangebound pattern for the remainder of the session, closing at 65,450.19, marking an increase of 170 points or 0.26 per cent day-over-day.

Gold price surpasses Rs213,000 per tola in Pakistan

The price of gold in Pakistan has experienced an upward trend, marked by a noteworthy increase of Rs2,000 per tola within the domestic market on Saturday.

This surge brings the price of one tola of gold to Rs213,300, as reported by Muhammad Arshad, the chairman of the All Pakistan Jewellers Manufacturers Association.

Similarly, the price of 10 grammes of gold also saw a significant increase, rising by Rs1,714 to reach Rs182,870.

On the international front, gold prices are also experiencing an upward trend, currently standing at $1,987 per ounce.

Pakistani rupee maintains winning streak against dollar for third day to close at Rs286.73

The Pakistani rupee continued its upward trend against the US dollar for the third consecutive session in the inter-bank market on Thursday, appreciating by 0.09 per cent. According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the currency settled at Rs286.73 at the close, showing an improvement of Rs0.25 compared to the previous day’s rate of Rs286.98.

In a significant development, Finance and Revenue Minister Ishaq Dar met with US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome on Wednesday to discuss the economic ties between Pakistan and the United States, as well as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan program.

This meeting took place following the IMF’s criticism of Islamabad’s budget proposals for the fiscal year 2023-24. Esther Perez Ruiz, the IMF’s Resident Representative for Pakistan, expressed dissatisfaction with the budget proposals, describing them as a missed opportunity to broaden the tax base. She also criticised the new amnesty scheme, stating that it sets a damaging precedent.

Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated on Wednesday that the immediate goal, with the assistance of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), is to increase Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the country to $5 billion.

On the international front, the US dollar remained close to a one-month low against a basket of currencies on Thursday. This followed Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s testimony, where he maintained his usual stance and offered little room for surprise.

Powell’s comments to lawmakers on Capitol Hill aligned with the central bank’s previous policy meeting, indicating that further rate increases are likely if the economy continues its current trajectory. As a result, the greenback depreciated by nearly 0.5 per cent against six major peers in the previous session.

Meanwhile, oil prices slightly declined on Thursday. Market expectations of further interest rate hikes were balanced by potentially bullish US oil inventory data, which indicated a decrease in stocks.

  • Pakistani rupee maintains upward trend for fourth consecutive day, closes at Rs285.15 against dollar

Pakistani rupee maintains upward trend for fourth consecutive day, closes at Rs285.15 against dollar

According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the Pakistani currency has maintained its upward trend against the US dollar for the fourth consecutive working day in the interbank market.

The local unit (PKR) has recovered Rs0.59 against the USD, closing at Rs285.15, while the US dollar closed at Rs285.74 on the previous day.

In contrast, the open market has seen the dollar being sold at over Rs300. Last week, the rupee reached a record low of Rs298.93 against the US dollar.

Experts attribute the fluctuation in the dollar rate to the deadlock over the IMF deal and ongoing political unrest in the country.

Due to the delay in the revival of the $6.5 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout programme, Pakistan is now seeking additional funding from friendly nations.

The staff-level agreement between the International Monetary Fund and Pakistan, initially scheduled for February 9, has been postponed.
