‘Porn attack’ during Zoom meeting by Pakistan Embassy in US leaves internet divided

An alleged “porn attack” by unknown cybercriminals during an online meeting of the Pakistan Embassy in the United States (US) has left the internet divided.

As per the details, Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh on November 18 hosted a virtual town hall meeting with members of the Pakistani community in the US. The aim of the meeting was to engage with Pakistani expats in the US and address their consular-related concerns.

The Zoom meeting, however, was interrupted by a “cyberattack playing offensive/obscene material violating all norms of civility and decency”, the embassy said in an official statement.

“Regrettably, the E-Kacheri [town hall meeting] hosted by the Mission yesterday was interrupted by a cyber-attack playing offensive/obscene material violating all norms of civility and decency [sic],” the statement read.

It added that the embassy disconnected the meeting and resumed it shortly after removing the disruptor.

“The matter was explained to the participants, who also condemned the incident, which is under investigation. Attempts to politicize, abuse, and exploit a forum purely facilitative for the diaspora, and motivated attempts to twist facts are unfortunate, counterproductive, and should be avoided,” it added, maintaining that the embassy remained resolutely committed to serving the diaspora.

The statement from Pakistan’s mission in the US came as participants took to social media and alleged that the embassy had “faked” the attack to evade tough questions aimed at the ambassador.

“At the virtual town hall [with] @PakinUSA, I asked Ambassador Sheikh how he could sleep at night representing an autocratic regime that cracked down on pro-democracy activists, targeted women and children, and disappeared HR defenders?” Mehlaqa Samdani, a Pakistani expat who attended the meeting, posted on X.

“Rather than respond as one would to a concerned Pakistani-American, he spoke to me as if I were a representative of the US government. He said and I paraphrase: ‘No country should have the audacity to lecture us on good governance/human rights, especially those who support Israel, those with the largest budget deficits in the world, and those financed by the rest of the world through currency reserves’,” she added.

Samdani went on to claim that the meeting was interrupted when she asked a follow-up question. “When I tried to ask a follow-up question, the town hall was conveniently ‘hacked’ with pornographic material, and the meeting had to be shut down.”

Samdani’s account of the meeting has sparked a debate among netizens over the veracity of the cyberattack.

  • US immigration officials ask Pakistani traveller about Imran Khan’s release

US immigration officials ask Pakistani traveller about Imran Khan’s release

A claim is circulating on social media that immigration officers at New York airport asked about the release of Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), from jail. Khan’s followers interpret this as “evidence” that “Imran Khan has gained worldwide fame.”

Zubair Ali Khan, a YouTuber, claimed that when he landed in New York to cover the United States elections, an immigration officer at the airport asked him about the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from jail. The officer’s inquiry led him to think that “Imran Khan has become Pakistan’s international identity.”

He posted on X (formerly Twitter): “At New York Airport after the immigration officer finished my interview and came to see me off, the Immigration officer asked me, When will Imran Khan be released from jail?

“In amazement, I asked, Are you Asian? The Immigration officer responded, No, I’m Spanish, then he asked, are protests still happening in support of Imran Khan in Islamabad, or is there peace now? Standing at the door, I was quite surprised by this conversation. I told him that things are now calm in Islamabad. Laughingly, I said that when Trump wins the election, Imran Khan will also be released. The immigration officer, while saying goodbye to me, shook my hand warmly and stated, God bless Imran Khan.”

The program host, Adil Nizami, made a similar claim on October 27, asserting that when he arrived at New York airport for U.S. election coverage, immigration officers asked him about the release of Imran Khan.

Social media users lambasted Zubair Ali Khan and Adil Nizami for their made-up claims, which they attributed to immigration officers.

One social media user, Dr Ayoub Chaudhry, commented on X: “This does not happen in America, brother; they have written questions, each of which must be answered and all conversations are recorded. If immigration officers ask even one unnecessary thing, departmental action is initiated against them. Imran Khan is famous, and there is no doubt about it, but what is the need to fool people by telling false stories?”

Former Ambassador to the United States, Hussain Haqqani, made a sarcastic comment: “A few days ago, another journalist told a similar story. However, their immigration officer did not come to let them out. The next reporter would claim that the immigration officer offered to drop him off at the hotel.”

How do you beg with a smile? Man confronts Finance Minister in the US

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has been leading a Pakistani delegation to the annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), being held in Washington DC from October 21-26, when he was confronted by Jalil Afridi, infamous for asking irrelevant questions from US State Department official briefing.

At the Wilson Center, Afridi questioned the finance minister: “When you come to Washington to ask for money, how do you beg with such expensive hotels and big delegations and with such a smile?”

Afridi further claimed: “Ever since Afghanistan became free [2021], its economy is performing better than Pakistan, especially the rates of dollars are better there than in Pakistan. Why is that?”

However, his question did not stop there. He also stated: “The justice system in Pakistan is also bad, and just a few days ago, it was the second death anniversary of the killed journalist. [Arshad Sharif]”

The Finance Minister did not get startled by this line of questioning. Rather, he calmly replied: “I’m not sure if I’m the right person to answer your questions because I certainly do not agree with you that Afghanistan’s economy is doing better than Pakistan’s. So we have a fundamental disagreement, but you’ll have to call the Finance Minister of Afghanistan to ask him what is happening there.”

Two days ago, Reuters reported that Pakistan is targeting around $1 billion in a formal request for funding from the IMF facility that helps low and middle-income countries mitigate climate risk.

60 American lawmakers ask Biden to push for Imran Khan’s release

Over 60 democratic lawmakers of the United States House of Representatives called on US President Joe Biden in a letter to use Washington’s leverage with Pakistan to secure the release of incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan.

The lawmakers, on Wednesday, wrote a letter to Joe Biden, noting: “We write today to urge you to use the United States’ substantial leverage with Pakistan’s government to secure the release of political prisoners, including former Prime Minister Khan, and curtail widespread human rights abuses.”

Pakistan government denied any such unfair treatment toward the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, in Adiala Jail Rawalpindi.

Meanwhile, the State Council today, while appearing before Islamabad High Court, stated that the Punjab government imposed a ban on meeting lawyers with Imran Khan in Adiala Jail Rawalpindi amidst security concerns, following that meeting between Khan and lawyers could not be possible.

Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan responded to the State Council, saying: “Is there a ban on lawyers meeting him? If the Punjab government has prohibited the meeting of the lawyers, it would have committed contempt of court; whoever issued this notification has also committed contempt of court.”

However, later in the day, it was reported that Adiala Jail authorities had arranged for a meeting between Imran Khan and lawyers Salman Akram Raja, Faisal Fareed Chaudhary and Shoaib Shaheen.

Sharif also noted that several Pakistani officials have made consular visits to Siddiqui at the prison over the years and have expressed “significant concerns regarding her treatment.”

Concerning the health of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, the Prime Minister’s letter to Joe Biden noted: “In fact, they even fear that she could take her own life.”

“Keeping these facts in view, I request you, Mr President, to kindly exercise your constitutional authority and accept Dr Siddiqui’s clemency petition and order her release strictly on humanitarian grounds,” the letter maintained.

US flags India ‘country of particular concern’ amid worsening religious freedoms

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) on October 2 has called for Narendra Modi-led India to be designated as a “Country of Particular Concern” for worsening religious freedoms in the country.

“Individuals have been killed, beaten, and lynched by vigilante groups, religious leaders have been arbitrarily arrested, and homes and places of worship have been demolished,” read the damning report, which highlights human rights abuses in India.

The report also criticised the Modi government’s 2019 decision to disenfranchise religious minorities through Citizenship Amendment Act.

The report also revealed how Indian government officials use misinformation and disinformation to incite violence against religious minorities and their places of worship.

“The government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reinforced discriminatory nationalist policies, perpetuated hateful rhetoric, and failed to address communal violence disproportionately affecting Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, Jews, and Adivasis (indigenous peoples),” noted the US federal government’s report.

Joe Biden appreciates Pakistan’s efforts in tackling terrorism

President of the United States (US) Joe Biden has highlighted the significance of Washington’s relations with Pakistan for “regional stability and security” after he received a Letter of Credence from the Pakistan Ambassador to the US, Rizwan Saeed Shiekh.

At a ceremony at Blair House in Washington DC, Biden said, “The relationship between our two countries remains important for regional stability and security. We appreciate US-Pakistan cooperation on countering terrorist threats,” a statement released by the Pakistan embassy in the US read.

“The United States will continue to stand with Pakistan to tackle the most pressing global and regional challenges of our time,” he added.

The US President’s statement comes at a crucial time when the US imposed sanctions on three Chinese companies and a Chinese research institute that had assisted Pakistan in developing the Shaheen Three and Ababeel missile systems.

During a press briefing from Washington yesterday, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller had stated, “We have been clear and consistent about our concerns with Pakistan’s ballistic missile programme for many years.”

US gives ridiculous justification to embargo Pakistan’s missile programme

The United States (US) has reiterated its double standards in the international world, emphasizing its stance on Pakistan’s long-range ballistic missile programme, citing the absurd reason of strengthening the international non-proliferating regime.

In a press briefing from Washington, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated, “We have been clear and consistent about our concerns with Pakistan’s ballistic missile programme for many years.”

“Pakistan has been a long-term partner of ours, and I think what this action shows is that there continue to be places where we have disagreement, and when we have disagreements, we won’t hesitate to act on those to protect America’s interests,” Miller added.

Responding to Miller’s statement, Pakistan stated, “Such double standards and discriminatory practices undermine the credibility of global nonproliferation regimes, increase military asymmetries, and endanger international peace and security.”

The US imposed sanctions on three Chinese companies and a Chinese research institute that had assisted Pakistan in developing the Shaheen Three and Ababeel missile systems.

In a statement, the spokesperson of the State Department had cleared that these embargos were imposed under the Arms Export Control Act (AECA) and Export Control Reform Act (ECRA).

No, Khawaja Asif, there are no global firewalls to restrain social media

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has claimed that safety firewalls are being implemented to ensure checks and balances on uncontrolled social media sites. He made this statement during his appearance on the talk show ‘Faisla Aap Ka’ with journalist Asma Sherazi.

‘’Everything will be fine after some days,’’ he said.

Khawaja Asif added that developed, democratic countries like the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US) also have protective systems to filter out content and websites deemed anti-state and anti-society.

“Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) also have filters or use different technologies to address spam, phishing attacks, and other unwanted content, but these are all private companies,” explains Jason Pielemeier, the executive director of the US-based Global Network Initiative (GNI), in a conversation with Geo Fact Check.
