PML-N, Buzdar scramble to take credit for Arshad Nadeem’s big win

Right after Pakistani champ Arshad Nadeem won the gold medal in the javelin competition in the Olympics 2024 after years of sweat, toil, and struggle – politicians and political parties scrambled to congratulate him and take credit for the star athlete’s fantastic feat.

Former Chief Minister of Punjab Usman Buzdar posted an old picture of himself and Arshad with the caption, “This is a memorable picture from five years ago when I saw Arshad Nadeem’s talent, invited him to the Chief Minister’s office, and assured him of all support from the Punjab government.”

Meanwhile, netizens were outraged at Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Mashood, congratulating Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for “his vision” right after Arshad won the gold medal with his record-smashing throw.

Moreover, an X user tweeted about the comparison of Pakistan’s win in the 1992 Cricket World Cup and Arshad Nadeem’s 92.9-metre-long javelin throw that made him the champion, to which the official handle of PML-N quoted, “Both the time it’s PML-N government!”

Social media reacted angrily to politicians trying to take away the champ’s spotlight. At the same time, one user posted a picture of Nadeem with his parents with the caption, “The only support that deserves the credit for Arshad Nadeem’s success.”

  • ‘Lost diamond in search for gold,’ Pakistani Twitter missing Buzdar is a hilarious must-see

‘Lost diamond in search for gold,’ Pakistani Twitter missing Buzdar is a hilarious must-see

Social media in Pakistan never lets go of a chance to have a meme fest, and the appointment of a new Chief Minister in Punjab proved to be the fuel the meme machine needed to churn out hilarious content.

The newly-elected Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, took the oath of office on Tuesday at Punjab Governor House with Muhammad Baligh Ur Rehman, Governor of Punjab, administering the oath.

During the oath ceremony, chief minister Maryam Nawaz was with her father and former prime minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif. The president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Shehbaz Sharif was also present in the oath ceremony.

Netizens immediately started reminiscing about former chief minister, Sardar Usman Buzdar, CM of Punjab from 2018 to 2023. Buzdar remained a point of contention for Imran Khan, who’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) appointed him as the Chief Executive of the most populous province.

At one point, Imran Khan referred to the beleaguered Buzdar as ‘Wasim Akram Plus’, implying that the unassuming South Punjab politician was a better version of the greatest left-arm bowler in history.

Here are the best Twitter reactions, as people remember Sardar Usman Buzdar:

  • Phir say ‘Ain’; PTI’s obsession with Urdu alphabet continues

Phir say ‘Ain’; PTI’s obsession with Urdu alphabet continues

In the politics of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), the Urdu letter “Ain” holds immense importance.

PTI founder Imran Khan has nominated Omar Ayub Khan, whose name starts with “Ain,” as the prime ministerial candidate.

PTI also nominated Ali Amin Gandapur, whose name also starts with “Ain,” as the party candidate for the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

There are interesting and funny comments about this on social media, reminding us that Imran also begins with Ain, Usman Buzdar with Ain, Arif Alvi, Omar Ayub, and Ali Amin Gandapur all start with Ain.

During PTI government, speculation was rife that Bushra Bibi asked Iman Khan to appoint a person whose name starts with ‘Ain’ as the chief minister of Punjab. After that, the PTI founder chose Usman Buzdar.

Former Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar Finally Speaks Up

Former Chief Minister Punjab and Imran Khan’s ‘Wasim Akram Plus’ has finally broken his silence after leaving Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI).

In a recent media interview on Monday, the mild-mannered Buzdar emphasized the need for all political parties to come together for the betterment and stability of the country.

When asked why he isn’t targeted as other PTI members are, Buzdar stated, “For the past two years, I have been dealing with legal matters in courts. I hope that challenging times will soon come to an end, issues will be resolved, and Pakistan will move forward towards progress and development.”

He also said that he has never talked ill about anyone and never will.

When asked about his stance on PTI, Buzdar refrained from commenting, stating that everything is in the hands of the people, and the public is the ultimate judge.

He advised PTI to sit together with others and talk for the progress of country.

Responding to questions about his competence, Buzdar expressed confidence that the people of the province can vouch for his sincerity and dedicated service to the region. He added, “People are the best judges, and they will vote for whoever they believe is better suited for the job.”

Buzdar stressed the importance of political parties setting aside differences and working collaboratively for the greater good of the country.

He emphasized the need for unity and collaboration to contribute to the improvement of Pakistan.

He sent well wishes to his former party and disclosed that he has joined hands with the head of the Muslim League Zia, Iijaz-ul-Haq.

A joint press conference was held where Iijaz-ul-Haq said, “I believe that elections will take place on February 8. Usman Buzdar, Yar Muhammad Rind, Amin Aslam, and 25 others are with us. We have support from various regions, including Peshawar, Sialkot, Khanewal, Sargodha, and Rajanpur. We are in contact with more parties, and they will soon be invited to join. We are forming an alliance in the name of National Unity to eliminate polarization.”

Firdous Ashiq Awan lists out ‘Usman Buzdar ki corruption kay chand karnamy’

Firdous Ashiq Awan, Central Information Secretary of the newly launched Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) has in a tweet accused former Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar of doing corruption during his tenure as CM.

Awan has listed out Budzdar’s alleged involvement in the following corruption scandals:

    •          5 billion to Farah Gogi’s account

    •          Encroachment of 9 kanals on government land

    •          50 Crore fraud in Multan City Housing

    •          30 lakh per capita from the shopkeepers of Taunsa

    •          420 million in bribes in commissioner and deputy commissioner appointments

Awan further said that more cases of Buzdar’s corruption will be revealed soon.

Last week, Aleem Khan made startling revelations in a TV show about former Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar.

It is pertinent to mention here that Firdous Ashiq Awan has served as special assistant to the former CM Punjab. Buzdar and Awan both have left the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Firdous Ashiq Awan left PTI on May 26, accusing Imran of using people like tissue papers, and later throwing them away. Usman Buzdar has also left PTI after the May 9 riots.

  • Bye bye Buzdar? Elahi says Khan has promised him the CM seat

Bye bye Buzdar? Elahi says Khan has promised him the CM seat

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Pervaiz Elahi has claimed that party chief Imran Khan has “promised” to give him the chief minister’s post once again if their party wins the election in Punjab.

Discussing the current political crisis, Elahi said that when he agreed to dissolve the assembly, Khan offered him the post of the central president of the party and promised him that he or his son Moonis Elahi would be the next CM of the province.

When asked that Imran has said that Punjab dissolution took place on former army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa’s directives, Elahi said that he had “no discussion with him over this issue.”

He clarfied that PTI respects the real establishment, however, there are some intruders, so the party cannot side with them.

He admitted that Khan’s fight was with Bajwa, adding that now that the former army chief is gone, new people had come in, so Khan doesn’t want more fights.

About the raid at his homes in Lahore and Gujrat last week, the PTI leader chose not to name who he thinks are responsible, saying “Everyone knows who they are”.

Last month, PTI’s Fawad Chaudhry said that the senior leadership of the party, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Hammad Azhar, and himself didn’t get party tickets for the upcoming Punjab election although it was widely speculated that they wanted one for the CM seat. Meanwhile, both former CMs of Punjab, Pervaiz Elahi and Usman Buzdar were given a ticket.

  • NAB is talking about 10 billion, my entire family doesn’t have 10 billion: Usman Buzdar

NAB is talking about 10 billion, my entire family doesn’t have 10 billion: Usman Buzdar

Former Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Usman Buzdar has said on Monday that it is a strange thing that National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is talking about 10 billion, while his entire family’s assets aren’t even worth 10 billion.

Speaking outside of the Accountability Court in Lahore where he had appeared in an assets beyond means case, Buzdar said that the bureau is making cases against him, his family, and his friends. He challenged NAB, saying that he will file a case against it hoping that he will get relief from the courts.

When asked about former CM Punjab Pervaiz Elahi, who recently joined PTI, Buzdar seemed to avoid answering directly, stating that since he is standing outside of the court, there should be no talk or discussion related to politics.

Buzdar has been given an extension in his interim bail till March 7.

The court also ordered him to become part of the NAB investigation and warned him that if he didn’t do it then the court will not provide him relief.

The accountability court also scolded the NAB prosecutor for not providing an inquiry copy to Buzdar and said that the accused should know what he is accused of. The lawyer informed the court that a written document was sent to Buzdar but he did not become part of the investigation.

  • ‘General Faiz ne hamaaray sath ziyaadtiaan ki’: CM Pervaiz Elahi says former DG ISI was against him

‘General Faiz ne hamaaray sath ziyaadtiaan ki’: CM Pervaiz Elahi says former DG ISI was against him

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has accused former spy chief Faiz Hameed of wanting to put him and his son Moonis Elahi behind bars.

In an explosive interview with ARY News’ programme ‘The Reporters’, Elahi said that General Faiz called the Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and asked him to put the father and son behind bars.

General [retd] Faiz ne humary sath ziyaatiyaan ki”, (General (retd) Faiz did grave injustices to us), Elahi said, emphasizing that the former head of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief was “strongly against” him.

He also revealed that he had taken up the matter with the ex-COAS General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa. Gen Faiz had then informed the army chief that the alleged political persecution had been ordered by Imran Khan.

‘Bajwa sahab humray mohsin hain’: CM Elahi

Throughout the interview, the chief minister regretted Imran Khan’s remarks against General [retd] Bajwa. He reminded that General [retd] Bajwa is Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) benefactor and they shouldn’t be “ungrateful”.

Elahi said that he told Moonis Elahi: “Bajwa sahab humray mohsin hain, aap ke mohsin hain, PTI ke mohsin hain. Khuda ka wasta hai un ke khilaf kuch na bolay” (Bajwa sahab is ours, yours and PTI’s benefactor, so don’t speak against him).

He said he had reiterated the same in his meeting with PTI Chairman Imran Khan a day ago at Imran’s Zaman Park residence. “He [Imran] replied: ‘I’ve received many requests [not to speak against Bajwa],’ so I said: ‘Then accept them,’” Elahi added.

“The injustice that Imran Khan did was making us sit beside him and criticising Bajwa sahab.”

Elahi said General Bajwa met the Saudi king and the crown prince, went to Qatar to bring money for Pakistan and even worked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support Khan’s government.

He said that he felt “very bad but could not speak to Khan in privacy before he made a long speech and announced the dissolution of Punjab and KP assemblies on Saturday.”

The chief minister also claimed that 99 per cent of the people within PTI were against Khan’s decision regarding the dissolution of assemblies.

‘Mei ne kaha GET OUT’, CM Elahi gives shut up call to PTI member for speaking against General Bajwa

He also warned that he and his party won’t tolerate a word against ex-COAS. He said that he even gave a shut up call to PTI’s Sardar Hasnain Bahadar Dreshak for speaking against Gen Bajwa.

Mai toh cabinet mein bardaasht nahi karta, pehlay din hee keh diya tha. Dreshak ne cabinet mei bak bak shuru kardi. Mei ne kaha get out” (I told everyone on the first day that I wouldn’t tolerate this behaviour in the cabinet. When Dreshak started speaking nonsense, I said get out).

Dreshak resigned from his post as the provincial minister for food on December 17. Earlier, it was reported that he and Elahi exchanged heated words during a cabinet meeting on Friday after which the minister left the room in protest and later sent his resignation.

    About Usman Buzdar

CM Elahi took a direct jibe at former CM of Punjab, Usman Buzdar, stating that he had ruined the province and that Elahi sorted things out with four months of hard work.

In response, Buzdar said that criticism of him is like criticising the PTI narrative. He added that he also has a lot to say but he has never spoken ill about anyone.

    Moonis Elahi met Imran Khan

Following Elahi’s interview, Imran Khan called Moonis Elahi to his residence and discussed his father’s “harsh” statements. The younger Elahi explained his father’s, his own and his party’s stance with regard to Bajwa.

On Sunday, Khan also said that he would not take any action against Gen (retd) Bajwa if he attains power again, saying his grievances with the former COAS were not a personal dispute.

The former premier made these remarks during a meeting with a delegation of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) at his Zaman Park residence in Lahore.

  • PTI submits petition to Supreme Court to look into attack on Imran Khan

PTI submits petition to Supreme Court to look into attack on Imran Khan

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has on Monday approached five registries of the Supreme Court (SC) in different cities across the country to seek the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the assassination attack on PTI chief Imran Khan in Wazirabad, the secret recording of PTI Senator Azam Swati and his wife and the killing of senior journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya.

In the plea filed in the Lahore registry, former Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Usman Buzdar is the applicant.

The petition about the assassination attempt on Imran Khan maintains that following the incident, another “grave injustice” continues to fester as the police have “refused to register the FIR according to the request submitted by the complainant”.

After the former Prime Minister was shot at during his party’s Long March, an First Information Report (FIR) was not registered. Imran Khan had nominated PM Shehbaz Sharif, Federal Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah and Major-General Faisal Naseer as the conspirators behind the firing incident. However, later, on the SC’s orders, an FIR was registered by the Punjab police on November 8. PTI rejected the report as it did not contain the names of the people whom Khan wanted to nominate.

The petition also sought the formation of a judicial commission into the “illegal private video recording” of Senator Azam Swati and his wife which was allegedly recorded while they were staying at an official rest house in Quetta.

Additionally, the party has also raised the matter of slain journalist Sharif’s murder with the court. The petition said it is crucial that an independent commission inquires about the circumstance that compelled Sharif to flee the country and eventually end up in Kenya.

In a press conference after submitting the petition to the SC’s Lahore Registry, PTI Vice President Shah Mahmood Qureshi also made an announcement regarding the petitions.

He hoped that the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Umar Ata Bandial, would consider his party’s pleas.

In Karachi, PTI leaders Ali Zaidi and Imran Ismail along with other party members reached the SC registry to file the petition. Meanwhile, former National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Suri and others moved the plea in Quetta.

Earlier, Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif had also written letters to the CJ to form judicial commissions on two issues — the attack on Khan and Arshad Sharif’s murder.
