Wedding at Lahore Fort’s Royal kitchen sparks furor

A wedding at Lahore Fort’s 400-year old Royal Kitchen sparked public outrage after pictures and videos from the event went viral on social media. This prompted the chief minister, chief secretary and other high authorities to take serious notice of the matter and they pledged action against all those involved in the incident.

According to reports, renowned industrial group Fatima Fertilizer Company had booked the UNESCO World Heritage Site for a corporate event. However, they decided to host a mehndi there instead. The Walled City of Lahore Authority said that the company was given permission to hold a corporate dinner but they went against the rules and that legal action will be taken against them.

The permission letter, addressed to Major Asjad Nawaz Cheema, which is being circulated on social media clearly stated that fireworks, live cooking, hooks and nails among other things are strictly prohibited.

The letter also only gave permission for a ‘private dinner’. WCLA DG Kamran Lashari also shared that the application had said that the dinner would consist of 100 participants (business people) only. However, there were close to 400 people at the event.

The kitchen was rented out for Rs500,000 with a refundable Rs100,000 security deposit.

Chief Secretary Punjab took notice of the incident while the WCLA suspended the fort’s in-charge Bilal Tahir for negligence and also formally requested for an FIR to be lodged against Fatima Fertilizer Company.

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar also condemned the incident and said in a press release that “Organising a marriage ceremony at the Lahore Fort is a serious offence.”

Meanwhile Fatima Fertlizer Company Limited rejected the media reports and the claims of the WCLA and said that the function was held in line with the instructions of the WCLA.

“It was neither mehndi nor valima, it was just a dinner hosted by our company in honour of its guests,” said the company’s Corporate Affairs Manager. “We are a responsible firm and we can never think of flouting the laws, rules & regulations, policies and guidelines of the public and private sector organisations.”

Following the wedding celebrations, Yasir took to Instagram to advise his followers to keep their weddings simple and easy.

“Ladies and Gentlemen,” wrote Yasir, “Marriage isn’t as hard as we’ve made it out to be.”

Sharing his own experience, Yasir elaborated, “I had originally planned to have my wedding at home but due to lack of space, I had to shift the venue. The two of us did not give each others families any unnecessary gifts. There was no dowry or bari (gift from the groom’s side to bride). We did not waste money on extra jewellery. The nikkah khwan (wedding officiant) was paid Rs 8000 while the food was according to the number of guests.”

“This is all that a wedding is – take it easy on your family and make weddings simple,” he asserted.

After a whirlwind romance and a very public surprise engagement, mayun and mehndi Iqra Aziz and Yasir Hussain are now husband and wife. The two exchanged vows in a beautiful daytime wedding. Yasir gave his bride 4 tolas of gold as haq mehr.

Iqra looked regal in an all-red Nomi Ansari ensemble and makeup by Waqar Hussain, while Yasir donned a cream sherwani.

Sharing details about the dress, Nomi said, “Our most anticipated work this year was definitely this magnificent piece we customized for the lovely Iqra Aziz. Bringing the look we had in mind to life was a one-of-kind experience that we enjoyed thoroughly! For this distinct all-red look we decided on an old school lehnga choli done our way with plenty of glitz and magic. We loved creating this piece as much as Iqra is loving wearing it.”

  • Bride marries neighbour after groom arrives late

Bride marries neighbour after groom arrives late

Uh-ho, tardy men beware. An Indian bride replaced her groom when the man she was supposed to marry turned up late to his own wedding.

According to a report in the Times of India, a bride from Bijnor’s Nangaljat village married a man from her neighbourhood after her groom and the baraatis arrived late for the wedding. Not only that, the groom’s family was locked up and allegedly thrashed by the bride’s family, who also stole their valuables.

The police revealed that this was supposed to be the couple’s “proper” wedding ceremony – they had tied the knot in a mass wedding programme six weeks earlier. At that time, the bride had not gone to her in-laws’ house because the couple wanted to get married again with “proper rituals”.

The drama doesn’t stop there – the two families reportedly also had their differences over the dowry as well. The bride’s family claimed the groom and his father had demanded a bike and cash and threatened the family if their demands weren’t met.

Nonetheless, the groom’s side was supposed to arrive at 2pm on the day of the wedding but turned up late at night instead. As a result, the bride’s family got annoyed and thrashed the groom’s family. The police had to intervene to have the groom’s side released.

The groom’s family also said they were taken captive, thrashed and the jewellery they had brought for the bride was stolen.

After the police intervened, the matter was settled and the bride married another man the next day.
