Jemima Goldsmith, Talha Anjum statements on Palestine-Israel war trigger intense backlash, debate

As the Palestine-Israel conflict rages on in the Middle East, several celebrities have come forward in favor of the Palestine struggle or against it.

Rapper Talha Anjum took to Twitter to share how social media users should not encourage the war, as it might further aggravate the oppression Palestinians were already suffering from, leaving users divided.

“An average Pakistani knows how to post praises for Hamas for killing hundreds of Israeli soldiers/citizens but isn’t smart enough to realise what’s stored in for Palestinians in coming days. 600 already dead. Stop glorifying wars. Grow the f*** up!!”

Many users sided with the ‘Gumaan’ rapper, as one user wrote: “I tend to agree to this to some extent. These praises aren’t for Hamas, these praises are for the fightback. but yeah, things were already bad and are about to get worse for Palestinians. Prayers for Palestine.”

While other user’s felt that Talha’s statement was extremely problematic as a user wrote: “No one knows this better than the Palestinians. Imagine the desperation of them to fight like this as a last resort! If peace talks ever worked they would have done it a long time ago. Each and every time Israel has broken their contract. They would never be liberated w/o war”

Another user wrote: “Bhai rebellion against oppression..which the people of Palestine have been facing since years now isn’t w@r and Hamas doens’t even have the resources to compete with Israel atm ..what are you even saying ..the only ones suffering were and are suffering now are Palestinians.”

Talha Anjum’s take alone did not trigger a debate about the conflict. Screenwriter and ex-wife of former prime minister Imran Khan, Jemima, shared on Twitter that she was standing in favour of innocent human beings who were killed in this war.

“I stand with the innocent human beings on both sides of this conflict, especially the children. Condemn both.”

Many users felt her take was justified

While others accused the ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’ filmmaker of playing on both sides and refusing to take a solid stance against Israel’s senseless massacre of countless Palestinian civilians. On another post where Jemima shared a quote saying “I stand with international law and human rights. There is no humanity in political tribalism”, most of the comments from Pakistanis were overwhelmingly negative.

Jemima Goldsmith shares the inspiration behind film ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’

Screenwriter and producer Jemima Goldsmith has revealed that she came upon the idea to make the film ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’ after living in Pakistan and observing arranged marriage committees, which would look for spouses for people.

“The film kind of started as a joke with my friends who were in their thirties, when i came back to the UK after having lived in Pakistan in those years,” Jemima said on Australian show Project TV.
“My ex-husband’s family is quite conservative so I lived in a joint family household. I lived with his father, his sisters, their husbands and kids. There were about 24 of us, living under the same house, and all our kids,” she revealed about her marriage to former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Jemima and the cricket hero divorced in _ after __ years of marriage.
“I did get to see arranged marriages up close, long term ones and ones that were arranged that I was on the committee for. And some of them were like surprisingly, to me, with my pre-conceptions, happy and successful. So when I came back in my thirties, my friends were at the point where they were hoping to settle down, have kids, get married, maybe not get married. We would say if you had seen functional parents..who would they choose for you and would it work? And it became a conversation point, and I think there’s quite a lot to be said for like simmer then boil and walking into love or falling in love. And the idea that they always used to say ‘Love comes at the end of the beginning of marriage’, which is a completely different point of view,” she said.
Jemima also described the film as ‘the rom-com Pakistan’, showing the colorful, vibrant side of the country that Western audiences don’t often see on the screen
“It’s the rom-com Pakistan aside from the darkness of politics. It’s the jazz-hands version of Pakistan. Which is nice to show because you don’t often kind to see the colorful, vibrant Pakistan we’re much more used to seeing Pakistanis and Pakistan as a kind of darker place on our screens particularly in the US and the UK.. So it’s nice to show the version of Pakistan that I grew to love.”

‘What’s Love Got To Do With?’ releases in cinemas on 24th February.

‘Women in Pakistan shouldn’t be pressurized to get married’: Sajal Aly

Sajal Aly’s upcoming film “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” is one of 2023’s most anticipated films. Hollywood stars Lily James and Emma Thompson star alongside Sajal Aly in the movie which boasts a script written by Jemima Khan. The film is about a filmmaker who decides to record his best friend’s arranged marriage.

Sajal was also asked about a scene in the film where the male lead speaks to Zoe (played by Lily James) of the pressures of being brown and belonging to a different religion in Britain. Aly responded by discussing how brown women are pressurized by their families to get married.

“A lot of what we explored in the film was the pressure brown women and men have to face to get married, no matter what. A lot of Pakistanis, and thousands of South Asian women would relate to my character. She’s the face of a lot of Pakistani and Asian girls and women out there. But the good part is that by the end of the film, she will have the courage to tell the family and her husband ‘no’,” the actor said during an interview with CNN News 18.

Sajal Aly also said that women face a lot of pressure to keep working on their marriages, regardless of their own happiness. She said that no woman should be forced to remain in a loveless marriage.

“If a marriage is not working out for both of you, then just part ways in a good way. You can still be friends, you know. So the way our society keeps pressurizing women to keep making adjustments and remain in loveless marriages, that’s not right. You should never stop living your life but by doing that you’ll stop living,” she opined.

Aly further emphasized that brown women are consistently told that marriage is suppose to the central purpose of their lives, when women should never stop dreaming or achieving their goals.

“Marriage is a beautiful relationship, but don’t make your life all about it. Make it a part of it, but not all of it. Because there is so much to see in your life. But we remain steadfast around this concept and then we keep following the same routine: marriage, babies, repeat. That too is okay. But women should never stop living and never stop dreaming.”

The journalist also asked her about the rise in strong female characters on the Pakistani entertainment screen, and Aly responded by saying that their goal was to empower women and girls through their art.

“A lot of Pakistani women are actors and producers and we are actively fighting for it. We try to kind of, empower our girls and women through the art as well,” she said.
