    Secretary of Schools Punjab, Khalid Nazir Wattoo, has revealed in a statement that winter vacations in Punjab will begin on December 20 and will last until January 10, reports Geo News.

    This year, the vacations will last 20 days, unlike previous years. The change is in response to shifting weather patterns, smog, and climate change, which have prompted the Punjab government to redesign its policies for the coming season.

    Initially, the schools were shut down by the Punjab government due to smog earlier in the month. Moreover, the school timings, along with the timings for office goers, have been changed. 

    In previous years, the schools were also closed by the Punjab for the same reason.

    The caretaker government of Punjab has extended winter holidays for junior students till Grade One.

    Students of all classes till Grade One will commence school on January 16, whereas middle school students and seniors are advised to stay indoors.

    The caretaker Chief Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, has also cancelled morning assembly sessions till January 31.

    The announcement came as the CM was visiting Children’s Hospital, Lahore. He took notice of about three dozen deaths of children due to pneumonia in the province, the chief minister on Wednesday also decided to postpone all examinations slated to be held during this month.

    Announcing the holiday extension CM added, schools up to class 1 will be shut down across Punjab.

    Mohsin Naqvi summoned an emergency meeting at Children’s Hospital in Lahore on Wednesday in this regard, saying 8 out of every 10 children are suffering from pneumonia. 36 kids have died due to this in Punjab.

    Most of the deceased children are babies younger than six months, he added.

    Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the importance of children using masks and washing hands in Lahore. This is made mandatory in schools.

    He also recommends the use of warm clothes amid the surge in cases of viral Pneumonia, especially in children, as highlighted by health experts in Lahore.

    Winter vacations in both public and private schools are drawing to a close but the weather is growing increasingly harsh. Media is speculating that a possible 10-day extension in winter break for schools in Punjab is being considered by the government, reports The News.

    Despite the absence of an official decision or announcement from the School Education Department (SED) Punjab regarding an extension in the winter break, a notification issued by the Literacy & Non-Formal Education Department Punjab regarding the winter break for its non-formal educational institutions has started discussions.

    It is important to mention here that the Literacy & Non-Formal Education Department of Punjab adheres to a distinct winter break schedule of its own. The Literacy & Non-Formal Education Department has now notified the winter vacations in all Non-Formal Education Institutions in Punjab from Jan 1, 2024 to Jan 10, 2024.

    Originally, winter break for schools in Punjab commenced on December 18, 2023, and is scheduled to conclude on January 1, 2024. However, as temperature drops and winter conditions intensify, there is a growing debate about the potential extension of the annual winter break which if approved by the government will also be adopted by SED.

    Winter vacations have been announced for all the educational institutions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in a notification released by the provincial Education Department.

    Holidays in all the plain areas, typically the summer zone, will span from December 23 to December 31. However in the winter zone, including the mountainous region, winter vacations will be for an extensive time, from December 23 to February 29.

    The long break in the mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan is due to the severe winter conditions in the region which brings all the activities to a halt.

    The caretaker government of Punjab has revoked the facility of free travel for students in the Orange Line Train and Metro Bus as winter vacations commence in the city today.

    Ahmed Javed Qazi, Secretary Transport Punjab told Geo News that free travel on student cards for students in the city has been suspended during winter holidays in Lahore.

    The implementation of the decision starts today (December 16) and will remain active till the next order.

    Winter holidays officially span from December 18 to January 1.

    The Secretary of Transport elaborated that the caretaker cabinet will review whether the service should be restarted or not after the holidays end.

    The federal government has announced the schedule for winter vacations for educational institutes functioning under the administration.

    Vacations in federal educational institutes will officially commence from December 25 to December 29. However, Federal Directorate of Education officials said that the institutes will close on December 22, which falls on Friday, and reopen on January 1, 2024, reports Geo.

    In Sindh, holidays will start on December 22 and end on December 31.

    In Punjab, vacations will start on December 18, 2023, in public and private schools across the province and continue till January 1, 2024.

    Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced on X (former Twitter) that Punjab schools will have a 15-day long winter break, as per the winter vacation schedule.

    Late on Thursday night, Naqvi posted that vacations will start on December 18, 2023, in public and private schools across the province and continue till January 1, 2024.

    “We held a meeting with experts and govt officials today addressing the SMOG challenge in Punjab. With an improved Air Quality Index (AQI), no restrictions are planned for the upcoming weekend. Additionally, winter vacations for children will commence from Dec 18, 2023 to Jan 1, 2024,” the CM wrote on his official handle of Twitter.

    Earlier in the week, Sindh announced winter vacations from December 22 till December 31.
