Justice still pending as Jaranwala incident marks one year

The Christian community in Jaranwala is still awaiting justice one year after the mob attack on their community. The government of Pakistan had promised to provide justice to the victims of the vandalized Christian community and to punish those involved in the violence, but their efforts appear to have been ineffective.

On August 16, 2023, two Christian residents were allegedly accused of blasphemy, a charge that was later disproved. Despite this, a large mob went on to vandalize 20 churches and around 80 Christian homes.

Amnesty International has reported that more than 40 percent of the affected Christian families are still awaiting government compensation.

Out of the 5,213 suspects, 380 were arrested, but 305 individuals were released on court orders.

Only 85 out of 146 families have received compensation so far, while 61 are still waiting for their due.

‘’We saw our houses in complete shambles as the building would soon collapse. To date, we have received no support. My husband is unemployed for a year because no one hires him (due to stigma). Many people received the promised compensation of 2 million rupees (US$7,200), but we did not receive it’’ said Jaranwala resident Christian Khalida Bano.

The apex court disapproved the police report on the Jaranwala incident in February 2024, stating that it lacked the required information.

One year later, trials against the culprits have yet to commence.

Taylor Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ breaks sales records worldwide

Taylor Swift’s album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ just made history by selling the most vinyl copies in a single week, achieving the incredible feat in just three days.

During the weekend, fans bought a whopping 700,000 LP copies of Swift’s album, breaking her previous record set by ‘1989’ (Taylor’s Version), which sold 693,000 copies in a week last October.

Billboard shared the news, highlighting Taylor Swift’s ongoing success in the vinyl market.
Back in October 2022, Swift’s album ‘Midnights’ also made waves by selling 570,000 copies in a week on vinyl.

These records are specific to the ‘modern era’ since 1991, when SoundScan started tracking sales across different formats. While there might have been albums selling more than 700,000 vinyl copies per week in the past, we didn’t have data like this back then.

Still, Taylor Swift’s incredible achievements in LP sales are unmatched in recent history.

  • Inflation in France hits record-high since 1990s

Inflation in France hits record-high since 1990s

Preliminary EU-harmonised statistics indicated that inflation in France surged more than projected in May to a new high, putting additional pressure on President Emmanuel Macron before upcoming legislative elections.

Consumer prices rose 0.7 per cent in May, for a 12-month inflation rate of 5.8 per cent, up from 5.4 per cent in the last month and the highest rate since France started working on European Union methodology to generate the numbers in the early 1990s, as per the INSEE statistics.

Inflation was predicted to grow to 5.6 per cent on average, considering a poll of eight economists in a report by Reuters.

High inflation is at the top of France’s political agenda, and following the elections, Macron’s government has promised a new wave of measures to protect buying power.

Apart from Malta, France has managed to maintain the inflation lower than the rest of the EU due to a 25 billion euro package of measures that includes, among other things, hefty price limits on gas and electricity.

Annual inflation in France, as measured by the national consumer price index, climbed to 5.2 per cent in May from 4.8 per cent in April, reaching its highest level since September 1985, according to INSEE.

This month, economists surveyed by Reuters projected an average growth rate of 5.0 per cent. In France, the national index is regularly monitored, whilst outside the country, the EU-harmonised index is used to assess inflation rates among euro-area nations.
