On this day, Egypt’s Rawya Ateya became the first woman to be elected to the National Assembly in 1957 although opinion polls conducted at the time showed that 70 per cent of Egyptian men were opposed to the idea of women taking seats in parliament. During her time as a parliamentarian, she championed women’s rights, insisted on maternity leave with full salary, and presented a law abolishing polygamy.
