  • ‘We need more directors who are telling stories from the heart’ Mahira Khan speaks to Variety on Maula Jatt’s success

‘We need more directors who are telling stories from the heart’ Mahira Khan speaks to Variety on Maula Jatt’s success

The film The Legend of Maula Jatt has become the highest grossing film in Pakistan, breaking all records by making more than $10 million globally.
Film star Mahira Khan. who starred as Mukho in the film, spoke to Variety along with director Bilal Lashari. Discussing the success of the film, the actress emphasized the importance of filmmakers and storytellers who could take stories from Pakistan to international platforms.

“Whether it’s Joyland, whether it’s Maula Jatt, the people at the helm of these projects are passionate. They have stories to tell and they are visionaries. We need more directors, more storytellers, who are telling stories from the heart. The other thing we really, really need is that I would like to see our government supporting our industry. And this year, we saw that happen,” the actress told the magazine.

Khan also spoke about platforms like Netflix and Amazon coming to Pakistan, stating,

“Cinemas will be opening up and films like Maula Jatt have doubled, tripled, quadrupled footfall. These may be small, little steps, but they are eventually going to be really, really big steps. Netflix and Amazon – I believe they need to come in now because we have amazing content. But before that happens, we can actually put out as many films as possible, even the smaller ones. We don’t have a digital outlet yet. So we can still do that business and we can still put out those smaller films.”

Director and co-writer of the film, Bilal Lashari, discussed about how heartening it was to watch a Punjabi-speaking film receive immediate international fame the way Maula Jatt has done. He hoped the success of the film will pave the way for more stories from Pakistan to get an international audience.

“What a fantastic journey our film has had since its release. The love and appreciation from audiences has made this 10-year ride worth every moment. It is heartening to see people embrace regional cinema across the globe. I hope the success of The Legend of Maula Jatt will pave the way for stories from Pakistan for a worldwide audience.”

Mahira talked about her character Mukkho, Maula’s love interest, and how she was a fiercely independent woman who broke expectations that the film would follow the 1970 film’s representation.

“The biggest thing that Mukkho had was that she was just such an empowered woman – she loved fearlessly, her moral compass was so intact, she had integrity and she was fierce also. That was a very big thing that the women in this, in today’s Maula Jatt, are very empowered. And I think this is something that a lot of people asked me prior to the release that ‘Are we going to see the same 1970s representation of women?’ I said, no, you’re going to see Bilal Lashari’s representation of women. I’m glad to have been a part of it.”

When Mahira Khan was questioned about growing tensions between Pakistan and India, which has led to Pakistani artists and films being banned from playing in the former, the actress pointed out that Indian and Pakistani artists look out for each other since they are connected by the thread of art and how they have become soft targets by their countries.

“I had the most amazing time working in India. I am still in touch with so many people and there’s a lot of love there. Unfortunately, we are easy targets, soft targets, whether it’s us here in Pakistan, whether it’s them there in India. Because we’re artists, and we’re connected by that thread of art, we actually get each other. So we’re trying to look out for each other, more than anything. Even now, we are so careful with what we write on social media. It’s not that we don’t talk to each other. It’s not that we don’t wish each other on our birthdays. It’s not that we don’t meet each other in different countries. It’s not that – it’s just that we are actually not just protecting ourselves but protecting each other.”

Khan further hoped that there would be an opportunity in the future for artists from India and Pakistan to collaborate on a project, and hoped that things would soon get better for this to happen.

“Unfortunately, it’s politics, it’s not a personal thing. On both ends, until the time that scapegoats are needed, we will always be that. But let’s say that it gets better. Let’s say that there is someone in power who does not use us as easy targets. That would be lovely. Can you just imagine the collaboration? It would be lovely,” she said.

  • Hina Altaf expresses disappointment over morphed viral video, rubbishes miscarriage speculation

Hina Altaf expresses disappointment over morphed viral video, rubbishes miscarriage speculation

In an interview with BBC Urdu, actor Hina Altaf spoke about her prolonged absence from social media and how misconstrued narratives can be detrimental to an individual.

Recalling the controversy involving her husband Agha Ali in 2020, when Ali told her “never to get fat again”, the Dour star pointed out how it was just a private agreement between them as partners that was misunderstood on many levels.

“It was just a personal understanding between us as a couple that served as a motivation factor. I just said ‘Agha reminds me not to eat a lot’ casually but people took this too sensitively than expected. I strongly respect the fact that weight loss is not an easy journey for everyone. Not everyone has the time to hit the treadmill, run a few kilometers daily, or just do a quick 15-day course to lose a couple of pounds. Many people have different challenges and health problems in their path, so maintaining health definitely isn’t easy,” explained Altaf.

She then highlighted how the aforementioned incident served as a reminder to her to never openly share her views again. “I think people took our drawing room talk too seriously and compared our situation with their own. After this incident last year, I have learned that everything is not meant to be spoken on television,” noted the Agar actor.

Before concluding the conversation, Altaf mentioned how social media doesn’t really bother her anymore, except for the time someone made a doctored video on her. She said, “Looking at a few pictures online doesn’t make anyone know the whole truth behind someone’s life or relationship. However, one thing I really dislike is when people ask me about having children. Normally, I always respond that when God wills, it will happen. But my relatives once sent me a video that implied I have had two miscarriages and am currently pregnant. This video extremely hurt me. I have never said this, usually, I would have ignored it, but it made me really upset.”

Last year, Aagha and Hina shared on Waseem Badami’s show that they first met on an ARY Zindagi show that Hina hosted, however, they first got talking on an Eid show in which they were the hosts.

While Hina denied that the two fought, Aagha confirmed that the two had, in fact, had some disagreements. “I would say it was a small disagreement because it was hard to develop a comfort level since we had to host the show together for the first time,” he shared.

The two then shared just how unpredictable life is. They ended up sharing their life together when they couldn’t even share the stage when they first met!

“Sometimes we sit and talk about how unbelievable it is! I could’ve never thought that I’d end up with Aagha and vice-versa. But we’re blessed,” said Hina Altaf.

When and how did they decide to get married then? Aagha shared that their friendship blossomed went they were cast together in a serial. “The show’s name was apt because we were in fact lost, and perhaps we were meant to find the right way to each other’s hearts and that’s how we became friends through that project,” he said.

Aagha termed their marriage a blend of friendship and arranged marriage, thanks to Hina becoming great friends with his mom who pushed him to pursue her for marriage.

“I had told Aagha that I want to settle down and that I was looking forward to settling down soon, and Aagha took that seriously,” said Hina Altaf, adding, “Aagha’s younger brother also pushed us to get our nikkah done on Jumma tul wida, and his mother and my father also wanted it to happen as soon as possible so.”

Now after 2.5 years of his death, the Cooper hospital’s staff has made a shocking revelation about the actor’s corpse. Reportedly, the person carried out the late autopsy and opened up about what he told his seniors.

Quoting TV9, Times Now News reported that Roopkumar Shah said, “When Sushant Singh Rajput passed away, we had received five dead bodies in the Cooper Hospital for postmortem. Out of those five bodies, one was a VIP body. When we went to perform a post-mortem, we learned he was Sushant and there were several marks on his body and two to three marks on his neck as well. The postmortem needed to be recorded but higher authorities were asked to only click pics of the body. Hence, we did that as per their order.”

Sushant Singh Rajput's body didn't appear to be a case of suicide

“When I saw Sushant’s body for the first time, I quickly informed my seniors that I feel it is not suicide but a murder. I even told them that we should work as per the rules. However, my seniors told me to click pictures as soon as possible and give the body to the cops. Hence, we performed the postmortem in the night only,” revealed Shah further.

The attendant concluded it by saying, “When I saw Sushant’s body for the first time, I quickly informed my seniors that I feel it is not suicide but a murder. I even told them that we should work as per the rules. However, my seniors told me to click pictures as soon as possible and give the body to the cops. Hence, we performed the postmortem in the night only.”

Earlier, in 2020, it was reported that All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS) doctors, who studied the autopsy report of Sushant Singh Rajput, had found procedural lapses in the report prepared by Cooper Hospital doctors. The hospital’s autopsy report was earlier carried out by a five-member doctors panel.

Hearing this traumatizing news, Rajput’s sister Shweta Singh Kirti reacted to the claims and asked the CBI to open up the case again and look into the matter.

Taking it to her Instagram, she wrote: “If there is an ounce of truth to this evidence, we urge CBI to really look into it diligently. We have always believed that you guys will do a fair investigation and let us know the truth. Our heart aches to find no closure as yet. #justiceforsushantsinghrajput.”
