  • Oscar nominees are getting gift bags worth $225,000. Here’s what’s inside

Oscar nominees are getting gift bags worth $225,000. Here’s what’s inside

While an Oscar nomination can open doors to bigger roles and a higher paycheque, this year it also comes with a cruise on a luxury yacht, cosmetic surgery, and personal matchmaking service in a gift bag worth more than $225,000.

The gift bag, which is not affiliated with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will be sent to all 20 acting nominees and the five men nominated for best director, Distinctive Assets, the Los Angeles-based company behind the goodie bags revealed. Among those who will be receiving a gift bag include Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie, Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Scarlett Johansson.

“It’s the highest value we’ve ever put together,” said Distinctive Assets founder Lash Fary, who has been assembling the bags for 18 years.

This year’s top swag includes a $78,000, 12-day yacht cruise; $20,000 of facial rejuvenation treatments; and $20,000 in matchmaking services.

The nearly 80 items also include clothing, gadgets and a 24-carat gold-plated vape pen that Fary said was selected with Leonardo DiCaprio in mind. Photos of DiCaprio vaping a few years ago helped popularise the trend.

More than a dozen items have philanthropic elements, including a book that empowers young girls and a cleanser that supports showers for the homeless.

Fary said the bags aren’t given based on need, but appreciation.

“This is an acknowledgment of an amazing performance that they put in and, for many of them, a lifetime of amazing performances. So, you’re never too rich or famous to outgrow gratitude,” he said.

Because Fary is not officially connected to the academy he’s allowed creative freedom with what’s included and its recipients.

“I only give this to the top acting and directing nominees. So, because we’re only gifting about 25 people, that means I get the most insanely priced things,” he said.

It’s also a chance for brands to be associated with high-profile celebrities.

“This is a business endeavor. This is about the promotion. This is about products connecting their services and their wares with the biggest trendsetters in the world,” Fary said.

Each bag is delivered directly to the nominees during the week leading up to the Oscars on Sunday.

Here are some highlights from the goodybag, compiled from Insider:

A 12-day trip for two on the world’s first ultra-luxury expedition yacht — the Scenic Eclipse

According to Insider, the yacht takes 200 guests on a 12-day trip to Antarctica, where they can encounter penguins, kayak, and snowshoe. This trip is valued at $78,190 and the yacht includes eight restaurants, a submarine, two helicopters, and a “spa sanctuary.”

Dinner for two at Flora’s Field Kitchen

Located in Cabo, Mexico, the restaurant serves exclusively handmade, fresh food from its nearby 150-acre ranch.

A “brain sensing headband” from Muse

The Brain Sensing Headband is a “personal meditation assistant” that senses users’ mental activity and translates it to sounds of weather to guide breathing.

A 24 karat gold Royal Chakra Bath Bomb from Hotsy Totsy Haus

Each bath bomb dissolves to reveal a full moon charged amethyst crystal.

A getaway for eight guests in an active Spanish lighthouse

The Faro Cumplida is an active lighthouse that hosts up to eight guests in three private suites.

    Foot Spray

Still Standing Unisex Foot Spray is made from three herbal remedies that contain anti-inflammatories and pain relievers to keep users’ feet comfortable for long periods of time — like awards season appearances.

  • Tamghae Imtiaz recipient Mehwish Hayat supports public hanging of child rapists

Tamghae Imtiaz recipient Mehwish Hayat supports public hanging of child rapists

As the National Assembly (NA) resolution seeking public hanging for child rapists attracts mixed reactions from all quarters, Tamghae Imtiaz recipient Mehwish Hayat has supported the same despite the opposition of many, including federal ministers Farrogh Naseem, Shireen Mazari and Fawad Chaudhry.

The NA on Friday adopted a resolution seeking public hanging of those convicted for sexually abusing and murdering children, with a majority vote amid opposition from two government ministers and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). While the two ministers — Shireen and Fawad — condemned the resolution and termed it as an expression of extremism, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Barrister Farrogh Naseem opposed it as “contravention to Islamic teachings and the Constitution”.

With the never-ending debate on capital punishment continuing on Saturday, actor Mehwish Hayat took to Twitter to support the resolution.

“Strange when these rapes and murders of children are reported, we all call for the perpetrators 2 be hung in public. When the govt agrees we all begin 2 hide behind ‘human right violations’. Unfortunate as it is, we need strong deterrents to stop this rot in society! [sic]” she tweeted with ‘#hangchildrapists’.

Meanwhile, Minister Farrogh Naseem, in a media talk, said that the Supreme Court (SC) had declared public hanging of a culprit as unlawful back in 1994. “The apex court has declared public hanging of a convict a violation of the Sharia and the Constitution.”

“The Law Ministry will not hammer out a law against the constitution and the teachings of Sharia,” he said.

The resolution was tabled in the Lower House by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan. He had on Friday said that Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan wanted capital punishment for child abuse convicts.

  • Pakistan International Screen Awards comes under fire for ‘disrespecting’ nominees

Pakistan International Screen Awards comes under fire for ‘disrespecting’ nominees

The first Pakistan International Screen Awards (PISA) are being held in Dubai Friday night. The organisers have gathered pretty much the entire entertainment industry and flown them to Dubai for the event. However, turns out that several nominees have been neglected and not given their due respect.

Among those is Osman Khalid Butt, Saqib Malik, Bulbulay actor Nabeel Zafar and Suno Chanda‘s Nadia Afgan. According to these celebrities, they were nominated and invited for the event but the management bailed on them at the last minute leaving them hanging.

In a social media post, Nabeel recounted how he was nominated for an award and invited to the event by the organisers through their PR company. He said that the organisers requested him to submit his documents only to vanish.

Nabeel regretted that his name was used to promote the event and attract audiences.

“To all the people who are expecting us in Dubai, let me categorically inform you all that I will not be a part of the show.”

Osman Khalid Butt had a similar story to share though he did not go into details.

Nadia Afgan who was also nominated for her “outstanding work as an actress in a comedy role” also shared her story in an Instagram post. She also shared screenshots of her conversation with the organisers of the event.

“I feel like if you’re not an Insta star you’re not an Insta star. Aap jitni bhi mehnat karley aap jitney bhi achay actor hoon (No matter how hard you work , how good of an actor you are) its no use if you’re treated like this,” Afgan said while speaking to a local media outlet, adding that she had even gotten her dress made for the event.

Usman Mukhtar also slammed the organisers for promoting the event by using his videos even though he asked them to remove them as he wouldn’t be part of the event.

Ali Safina also slammed the award show and the organisers in a Facebook post.

Several actors including Sanam Saeed, Tara Mehmood, Bilal Ashraf and Aijaz Aslam lauded Safina for speaking up against the organisers behaviour.

PISA had earlier also misled audiences by announcing that Mahira Khan will be performing at the award show. However, Mahira clarified this on Twitter saying that she will only be attending the event.

Earlier, the organisers of the award show had flown a handful of celebrities to Dubai in a private jet, pictures of which had gone viral on social media.

Meanwhile, other celebrities who will be attending the event include Meera, Ali Zafar, Mahira Khan, Sheheryar Munawar, Strings, Adnan Siddiqui, Humayun Saeed, Hira Mani, Aima Baig, Zara Noor Abbas, Ayesha Omar, Sarwat Gilani and Hareem Farooq among others.

    Sanam Marvi files for khula

Renowned folk singer Sanam Marvi has filed for khula (woman’s right to divorce) from husband Hamid Ali.

According to a report in Geo News, Marvi filed for khula in a family court of Lahore. In her petition, Marvi said that she married Hamid Ali in 2009, but after a while, her husband’s attitude towards her changed and he started becoming abusive.

“Hamid started abusing and torturing me in front of the children. I tolerated abuse from my husband for the sake of my kids,” the singer told the court.

Marvi requested the court to grant her khula as she can no longer live with her husband.

Marvi tied the knot with Ali in 2009 after her former husband Aftab Ahmed was killed in Karachi.

In an earlier interview, Sanam had shared that her stepfather married her at the age of eighteen because of their poverty-stricken circumstances. But a short while after her wedding, Marvi’s husband was murdered in a targeted attack in Karachi. She was pregnant with their first child.

The same year she married Hamid, who is also her cousin. Sharing details about their marriage, Marvi had said, “He said, ‘I always liked her. But you married her off too young.’ Then my mother suggested that he visit and meet me in person as well. There were sparks. He started liking me more and then phone calls upon phone calls from the next day. And that’s how our story started — our love story.”

Sanam and Hamid have three children together.

The 33-year old singer was recently also part of Coke Studio Season 12 and her song Hairaan Hua was a hit.

Former Bollywood actor Zaira Wasim condemns Indian atrocities in Kashmir

Former actor Zaira Wasim, who hails from Kashmir, has condemned the curfews in the region.

Taking to Instagram, the Secret Superstar actor shared a lengthy note writing, “Kashmir continues to suffer and see-saw between hope and frustration. There’s a false and uneasy semblance of calmness in place of escalating despair and sorrow.”

She continues by asking many questions. “Why do we have to live in a world where our lives and wills are controlled, dictated and bent? Why is it so easy to have our voices silenced? Why is it so easy to curtail our freedom of expression? Why aren’t we ever allowed to voice our opinions, let alone our disprovals to decisions that are made contrary to our wishes? Why is it that instead of trying to see the cause of our view, our view is just condemned ruthfully? What is so easy to curb our voices so severely?

“Why can we not live simple lives without always having to wrestle and remind the world of our existence? Why is that life of a Kashmiri is just about experiencing a lifetime of crisis, blockade and disturbance so abundantly that it has taken away the recognition of normalcy and harmony from the hearts and minds?”

Zaira also warned not to believe the beautiful picture that the media has been showing about the Kashmir.

“Do not believe the unfair representation of the facts and details or the rosy hue that the media has cast on the reality of the situation. Ask questions, re-examine the biased assumptions. Ask questions. For our voices”

In early August, the Indian Government revoked Article 370 which granted special status to IoK(Indian occupied Kashmir). Troops were deployed in the region and all communication in the valley was blocked, cutting off Kashmiris from the outside world.

Earlier, Zaira had taken to social media to assure fellow Kashmiris that “this too shall pass.”

  • Did the 2011 film ‘Contagion’ predict the coronavirus outbreak?

Did the 2011 film ‘Contagion’ predict the coronavirus outbreak?

Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Damon’s 2011 film Contagion is re-appearing in movie rental charts in the UK and the US, in wake of the outbreak of coronavirus in Wuhan, China.

According to reports, Steven Soderbergh’s terrifying thriller, which was inspired by the 2003 SARS epidemic and the 2009 flu pandemic bears striking similarities to the coronavirus outbreak that has the whole world scared.

Contagion which starres Jude Law and Laurence Fishburne along with Winslet, Paltrow and Damon follows the story of a woman (Paltrow) who unknowingly catches what she thinks is a common cold during a “business trip” (read: secret rendezvous with her lover) to Hong Kong. Upon her return to the United States, the woman spreads her germs, and everyone who has come in contact with her — including her young son — is killed by what scientists call Meningoencephalitis Virus One (MEV-1).

The film tracked the spread of a deadly virus from discovery through its global spread to, finally, a vaccine being created. However, in the process 26 million people died worldwide in only 26 days after the virus’s discovery, followed by instances of social disorder and widespread societal breakdown.

The coronavirus is said to have originated in a live animal market in China’s seventh biggest city Wuhan. In the film, it is discovered in the final scenes that the virus was initially spread from a bat, disturbed by jungle clearance, which drops infected food into a pigpen. Additionally, the fictional MEV-1 and the coronavirus share similar symptoms which include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

Following the deadly outbreak, China, particularly the mainland areas have been sealed and most flights to and from the country have been suspended. The World Health Organisation has also declared it a global health emergency as scientists rush to discover a cure for it.
