‘Every child deserves the chance to reach her full potential’: Malala at the Commonwealth Games

Nobel Prize laureate and activist Malala Yousafzai attended the Commonwealth Games inauguration ceremony on Friday and gave an inspiring speech in Birmingham.

“When I first came to this city, I had never heard its name but I would come to understand it through the doctors and nurses at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital,” said Malala.

“Through the teachers who inspired me at school, helped my mother to learn English and taught my little brothers to drive,” she added.

“To the library of Birmingham, through the friends, I have made, from my best friend Ellen, a lifelong Brummy – to the families that have come here from Zimbabwe, Hong Kong, Pakistan and beyond.”

“Tonight teams from 72 countries and territories join the people of Birmingham to celebrate friendship across borders,” said Malala addressing the crowd during the Opening Ceremony.

“The young athletes who will compete over the next few weeks represent millions of girls and boys across the Commonwealth – our shared hope for the future.”

“A future where every child can go to school, where women are free to participate in society, where families can live in peace and in dignity.”

“Over the next two weeks when we watch the incredible athletes of the Commonwealth Games, remember that every child deserves the chance to reach her full potential and pursue her wildest dreams.”

“And now, it is my honour to say welcome to Birmingham.”

Pakistan has sent a contingent of 103 members to Birmingham who will participate in 13 different sports.

‘Matters have been decided, elections in October’: Sheikh Rasheed

Former interior minister Sheikh Rasheed said that an “agreement” has been reached, and the general elections will be held in October.

“Instead of by-elections, matters on new elections have been settled. The nation will soon hear about the date for the elections in October, the formation of a new election commission and a caretaker government,” said Rasheed.

“Even those in quarantine have agreed to elections,” said Rasheed taking a jibe at Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari.

Sheikh added that only JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman is left.

Criticising the coalition government, Rasheed said that their political credibility had come to an end and they cannot flee, cannot go to the people, and neither can they bring their people back to the country. Rasheed was alluding to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif.

“Now, the people will decide. They [government] have made a mockery of the assembly and democracy. The crisis is now shifting from Sri Lanka to Pakistan,” he added.

Rasheed’s statement came after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan ruled out the possibility of holding talks with the coalition government.

“I can talk to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the separatists of Balochistan and Sindh, but not with thieves. Will you speak to someone who robs your home?”

Gold prices hit an all-time high of Rs152,000 per tola

On Wednesday, the price of gold in Pakistan rose to an all-time high, reaching Rs152,000 per tola, primarily as a result of increased demand and the weakening of Pakistani rupee (PKR).

Just on Wednesday, gold prices increased by Rs2,500. The price per tola has climbed by a total of Rs10,900 since July 1 with the most recent hike.

Pakistan often follows the trajectory of the global market for bullion and other precious metals. A declining rupee, however, has altered the situation.

According to Akhtar Tesori, chairman of the Pakistan Gems Jewellery Traders and Exporters Association (PGJTEA), demand for gold jewelry was significantly decreased in the country during the past several months.

In the interbank market on Wednesday, the rupee finished at Rs236.02. This is a new record low for the rupee versus the US dollar.

The cost of silver in the domestic market remained steady at Rs1,600 for a tola and Rs1,371.74 for a gramme.

It is important to note that the Pakistani rupee has been among the worst-performing currencies in the world, falling more than 30 per cent since the beginning of 2022.

However, the dollar has declined globally as well, reaching a 20-year high against other currencies in part due to anticipation that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates more quickly than the majority of central banks.

In addition, dealers told The News that the local currency was under pressure due to the ongoing political unrest and a lack of dollar liquidity.

He sends men along with one porter to bring dead bodies. we stayed there till morning. He sends men after the police and jeep.”

The robbers made them sit 50 feet away from the camp. They asked them how many people were in the camp, and were told that they were a group of four people. Two of the robbers then went inside the camp to look for the fourth person and money.

“When they went inside the camp, they panicked after looking at the dead body and they called their fellow robber inside the camp,” Faizan told The Current.

After all of the robbers went inside, they took the opportunity to run away and they went “300 to 400 feet” away from the place to hide from them.

When they came back after a while after the robbers had left, they saw the dead body lying there. They left the dead body behind and went to ask for help to bring the dead body to a nearby village.

The FIR, a copy of which is available with The Current, was filed on July 25 in Naran. The police are still investigating the case.

  • ‘PPP was offered to bring down PML-N with the help of PTI’: Hamid Mir

‘PPP was offered to bring down PML-N with the help of PTI’: Hamid Mir

Senior journalist Hamid Mir revealed that last year, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was offered that along to give a tough time to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with the help of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after some backdoor meetings.

Speaking on Geo News programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath’, Hamid Mir said, “The PPP knows the full truth. Last year, the PPP convinced the PML-N to bring a no-confidence motion. This is because last year in September/October, the PPP was contacted. I revealed in your show Shahzeb saab that Asif Ali Zardari was being contacted to leave Pakistan just like Nawaz Sharif left on medical grounds. However, Asif Ali Zardari refused to go abroad. This is where the story started and the PPP has never revealed who conveyed this message. One-on-one meetings were held with the PPP leadership.”

Hamid Mir further revealed that some backchannel contacts were made between the PPP and PTI.

“The PPP was told that it should bring down the PML-N with the help of the PTI. However, the PPP did not take any of this seriously. After this, there were some other developments. They learned that a formula was being formed to adjust PTI in Sindh and similarly the PPP in the federal government, and that election will be held in October 2022. However, an important appointment will take place in April 2022. When the party started probing the suggestions, it realised that this was a long process. During this time Kala Bagh Dam was also to be made, the 18 Amendment would be rolled back, and talks of having a Presidential system too came to the surface and that’s when PPP ki kanpaain tangna shuru hogai. [That’s when the PPP was alarmed].”

“When the PPP realised this, they decided to contact Nawaz Sharif. Then Shehbaz Sharif saab was involved. And they were informed that before the elections, which were to be held in 0ctober 2022, the plan was to send the PML-N leadership to jail,” said Mir.

“Both the PPP and PML-N never really told anyone that they were bringing in the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan. They kept it a secret.”
