Police arrests 106 professional beggars in a crackdown

In a crackdown against professional beggars, the Rawalpindi Police arrested 106 beggars over the course of three days in an effort to reduce the issue of panhandling and lower the risk of traffic accidents caused by jaywalking.

According to a police spokesman, the anti-beggary squads carried out raids in various neighborhoods, took action against professional beggars, and detained them in various police stations throughout the city on the orders of Senior Superintendent of Police, Operations Rawalpindi, Waseem Riaz.

SSP Riaz claimed that specialised anti-begging squads were making a valiant effort to combat the rise in professional beggars.

“The professional beggars stand on various highways and squares of Rawalpindi city and not only affect the flow of traffic but also increase the risk of accidents. Therefore, the public is requested not to serve alms to them, as discouraging such factors will not only improve the society, but also the flow of traffic,” he said.

‘Stole people’s mandate, thumb impressions taken on blank paper,’ PTI lashes out after Elahi’s defeat

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders lashed out at Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain for directing his Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs) to vote for Hamza Shehbaz instead of his cousin and party leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi in the run-off election for the Punjab chief minister.

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said that Shujaat’s ability to make decisions is “limited due to his illness”, adding that his thumb impressions “were taken on a blank paper”.

Talking to journalists, Chaudhry also took a jibe at Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly Dost Mazari, and said that Mazari stole the people’s mandate, adding that he violated the Constitution.

He said that now the PTI has approached Supreme Court (SC) in this regard.

About Zardari, Fawad said that Pakistan cannot bear the brunt of the “politics of Zardari”.

Apart from Fawad, other PTI leaders also lashed out following yesterday’s defeat.

Talking to Twitter, PTI leader Shafqat Mahmood termed Mazari’s ruling as “shameful denial of peoples verdict”.

Meanwhile, Hammad Azhar said that Chaudhry Shujaat is the most dislikable figure among the masses.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi was of the view that yesterday’s incident is “equivalent to suppressing the voice of the people”.

It is pertinent to mention that Elahi had the support of 10 PML-Q MPAs apart from PTI. However, a day before the CM Punjab election, a meeting took place between Shujaat and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, which turned the tables in Hamza’s favour. On the day of the election, Shujaat directed his MPAs to vote in favour of Hamza.

However, the lawmakers cast votes in favour of Elahi but Mazari dismissed their votes.

“As you guys may have already seen my viral Nikkah video, it was a very private event. It’s very shameful and hurtful that a company like Studio 86 has no sense of privacy. They uploaded these videos and pictures without my permission while they knew it was a private event.”

She further warned her followers to be careful with bookings since “for the sake of publicity and a few followers”, they made her family moments viral. Adding a screen recording where the videographer had asked her whether he could share the video online or not, she revealed how they did it before her reply and assumed that the silence meant an affirmative response.

Khan added that she might herself share these moments online when she wishes to but no one else had the right to do it without permission. Concluding her stories, she thanked everyone who sent her prayers and good wishes.

As per media reports, he was allegedly planning to kill Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesman Nupur Sharma who made derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in June.

According to Indian media reports, the man is influenced by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP).

The accused, identified as Rizwan Ashraf, son of Mohammad Ashraf is a resident of Mandi Bahauddin. He had sneaked into India from Hindumalkot international border. He was arrested on the intervening night of July 16-17.

Muslim journalist accused of hurting religious sentiments in India released from jail

Indian journalist and fact-checker Mohammed Zubair was released from jail on Wednesday (July 20). He was granted bail by the Indian Supreme Court.

The police also charged him with criminal conspiracy, destroying evidence and receiving foreign funds in at least half a dozen other cases.

Mohammed Zubair is a co-founder of fact-checking website Alt News. He is a critic of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, and regularly tracks and highlights anti-Muslim hate speech by Hindu right-wing activists and politicians.

He was detained because of a tweet from 2018 that included a screenshot from a well-known Hindi film, which authorities claim was insulting to Hindu religious beliefs.

Just a few days prior to his detention, he had called attention to Nupur Sharma, a suspended BJP spokeswoman, who had made offensive remarks about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) during a TV debate.

Journalists allege that BJP-linked trolls weaponised Twitter and the law to send Zubair to jail in a fake case.

  • Pakistan removed from US human trafficking watchlist

Pakistan removed from US human trafficking watchlist

The United States (US) removed Pakistan from its human trafficking watchlist.

Although Pakistan was taken off the “watchlist,” Pakistan remains on Tier 2, which serves as a warning that penalties might be imposed if it didn’t make any further progress and will be downgraded to Tier 3, which would lead to sanctions.

Tier 2 nations are those who are making considerable efforts in that direction. Pakistan’s performance in combating trafficking, according to the study, has improved.

“The government demonstrated overall increasing efforts compared with the previous reporting period, considering the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, if any, on its anti-trafficking capacity; therefore Pakistan was upgraded to Tier 2,” the report said.

“The government allocated resources for the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) and amended the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act (PTPA) to remove provisions that allowed fines in lieu of imprisonment for sex trafficking crimes with women and children as victims,” the report added.
