  • FBR misses July 2023 revenue target by Rs2 billion, collecting Rs532 billion in taxes

FBR misses July 2023 revenue target by Rs2 billion, collecting Rs532 billion in taxes

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced that the tax revenues collected for the month of July 2023 amounted to Rs532 billion, slightly falling short by Rs2 billion of the target set for this period.

This figure reflects a noteworthy increase of 15 per cent year-on-year, compared to the Rs462 billion collected in July 2022.

However, when examining the data on a monthly basis, there was a significant decline of 43.52 per cent as the tax revenue for July 2023 dropped compared to the Rs942 billion collected in the previous month.

Looking ahead, the government has set a revenue collection target of Rs9.415 trillion for the fiscal year 2023-2024.

It is worth recalling that in the previous fiscal year 2022-2023, the FBR failed to meet its annual budgetary collection target by approximately Rs522 billion, as it collected Rs7.118 trillion by June 27, 2023, in contrast to the projected amount of Rs7.64 trillion for the entire fiscal year.

  • Lunar spectacle double supermoons coming our way in August

Lunar spectacle double supermoons coming our way in August

A celestial extravaganza is set to bedazzle sky watchers this month with not one, but two spectacular supermoons, beginning with the Sturgeon Moon tonight, August 1st, and culminating in a rare super Blue Moon at the month’s end.

Visible in various parts of the world, including the United States and Saudi Arabia, tonight’s supermoon, coined the Sturgeon Moon, will rise less than 226,000 miles away from Earth, as per USAToday.

This supermoon will make the lunar orb appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than an ordinary full moon, according to Pakistani space scientist Dr. Jawed Iqbal. The Sturgeon Moon, named after the large fish found in the Great Lakes, will reach its zenith at 2:32pm ETD Tuesday, as reported by the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

In Makkah, Majed Abu Zahra, the president of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, forecasts the supermoon to peak at 9:30pm local time. Sky gazers can look towards the southeast after sunset to capture this magnificent sight.

Supermoons, scientifically known as perigean full moons, occur when a full moon coincides with its perigee, the closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit. This makes the moon appear larger and brighter than a typical full moon. While supermoons typically occur three to four times annually, this month’s double spectacle is indeed a rare treat.

The second supermoon, a super Blue Moon, will illuminate the skies on August 30, promising to be the largest and brightest of 2023 due to its exceptionally close distance of 222,043 miles to Earth, nearly 17,000 miles closer than average. This super Blue Moon will peak close to sundown in the U.S., offering another chance for enthusiasts to marvel at the moon’s magnified radiance.

However, if missed, the next opportunity to witness a super Blue Moon will not arrive until August 2032, almost nine years from now. While Blue Moons – the second full moon in a calendar month – recur approximately every two and a half years, Blue Supermoons, like the one expected this month, occur far less frequently, the last one having occurred back in December 2009.

This extraordinary series of lunar events offers a golden opportunity for all sky-watchers to enjoy the night sky’s grandeur, serving as a vivid reminder of the fascinating phenomena that our celestial neighborhood continually offers.

  • Govt hikes petrol and diesel prices by nearly Rs20 per litre

Govt hikes petrol and diesel prices by nearly Rs20 per litre

In a move to fulfill its commitment with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has announced a substantial increase in petrol and diesel prices. The revision has taken effect immediately today (August 1st), with petrol price rising by Rs19.95 per litre and diesel price climbing by Rs19.90 per litre.

Here are the new petrol and diesel prices:

Product Old prices New prices Increase
    Petrol Rs253 Rs272.95 Rs19.95
    Diesel Rs253.50 Rs273.40 Rs19.90

Minister Dar stated that the price hike was necessary to comply with the IMF’s requirement to impose a petroleum development levy (PDL) on the rates. He mentioned that despite attempts to mitigate the impact on inflation-weary citizens, the government had little room to maneuver due to the binding agreement with the IMF.

The announcement was originally scheduled for July 31, but the government delayed the decision as officials sought ways to minimise the impact on the general public. The Finance Minister, making this announcement for the last time before his government’s term ends on August 12, emphasised that the decision was taken in the “national interest.”

Dar clarified that if it were not for the IMF agreement, the government would have attempted to reduce the PDL to provide relief to the masses. He referred to the measures taken by the previous government that decreased petrol prices but resulted in a breach of commitments with the IMF.

Explaining the reasons behind the price hike, the finance minister highlighted the surge in international market prices of high-speed diesel, which necessitated adjustments in local rates. He stressed that it was crucial to pass on the minimum amount to the consumers, considering the nation’s interests.

The sudden increase in fuel prices is likely to have significant implications on the overall economy, including its impact on inflation rates and the cost of living for ordinary citizens. With the government’s term ending soon, the incoming administration will face the challenge of managing economic stability and addressing public concerns over rising fuel costs.

  • Next 24 hours critical for tortured 13-year-old, attempted murder case registered against judge, wife

Next 24 hours critical for tortured 13-year-old, attempted murder case registered against judge, wife

According to the doctors of the General Hospital in Lahore, the next 24 hours are critical for the teenaged domestic worker allegedly tortured by an Islamabad Judicial Complex administrative officer and his wife.

Rizwana, 13, is admitted at the General Hospital to receive treatment for the injuries she sustained. The girl’s condition was better at night but became critical in the morning.

On the other hand, new charges have been added to the First Information Report (FIR) after Rizwana’s recent medical report was issued.

A section on attempted murder and one about breaking bones have been added to the case registered at the Hamak police station in Islamabad.

The shocking incident of severe torture on a teenage maid allegedly perpetrated by the wife of a civil judge in Islamabad has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation. The victim, a resident of Sargodha, was shifted to Lahore General Hospital on Monday, prompting an investigation into accusations against the judge’s wife.

Despite the public outcry, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has granted protective bail until August 1 to Soumia Asim, wife of Civil Judge Asim Hafeez. Authorities have said that investigation into the matter is ongoing and all involved individuals are being probed, with appropriate legal action being taken.

The Islamabad police have also recorded statements from both the victim and her father, though the medical report is still awaited. Despite the gravity of the crime, the investigation is being conducted by the relevant police station and not by the Special Sexual Offence Investigation Unit (SSOIU) under the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Act 2021, which has a specific mandate to handle offenses against juveniles.

Efforts to apprehend the accused have so far proven unsuccessful. The police conducted raids in Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Gujranwala but were unable to locate the judge’s wife, who had obtained pre-arrest bail.

According to the medico-legal certificate (MLC) issued for the teenage girl, the extent of her injuries was distressing. The report revealed lacerations on her head, face, and body, including broken teeth, bruises, and signs of strangulation. The girl’s harrowing ordeal came to light when her father, a laborer, filed a complaint with the Humak police station. Initially displaying reluctance, Islamabad police eventually registered a First Information Report (FIR) on July 26, charging the judge’s wife with criminal intimidation and wrongful confinement.

However, the FIR made no mention of the physical torture the victim endured, even though the medical report clearly pointed to such abuse, as reported by Dawn.

As public awareness of the case grows, civil society and human rights organizations have called for a thorough investigation and the appropriate punishment of those responsible for subjecting the young maid to such cruelty.

The case has highlighted the issue of child labor, which is considered a criminal offense under the law. The public is urged to report any such incidents to the police to protect vulnerable individuals from abuse and exploitation.

  • “Usne meri qamar mai chaaku maara hai’, Khan says Bajwa betrayed him

“Usne meri qamar mai chaaku maara hai’, Khan says Bajwa betrayed him

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa “stabbed” him in the back.

Talking to Geo’s Haider Shirazi on camera at a court, Imran Khan said of the former army head, “I have been saying this, he stabbed me in the back.”

“People say, ‘You must have done something.’ I did nothing. He [General Bajwa] was already planning to get an extension, he was thinking ahead,” the Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said.

“That conspiracy is obvious,” he stated.

Since his removal from power through a Vote of No Confidence in April 2022, Khan has attacked the former Army Chief many times in public rallies and interviews. However, the current Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Lt. General Nadeem Anjum alleged in a press conference held last year that the PTI government offered Bajwa an extension in March 2022 for “an indefinite period of time” if he would save the government from being ousted.

    Khan has denied the allegations.

Prince William, the Prince of Wales, caused a stir among customers when he made an unexpected appearance at a food truck, dishing out eco-friendly plant-based burgers.

The event took place in collaboration with Sorted Food, a renowned British YouTube channel and food community. With an impressive following of 2.7 million subscribers and nearly 1 billion views, Sorted Food joined forces with Prince William to shed light on the Earthshot Prize and its recent winners, individuals tasked with finding sustainable solutions to heal our planet.

Appearing as a special guest on the YouTube video released on July 30, Prince William showcased the Earthshot Prize and its mission to repair the planet. He surprised the Sorted Food team by arriving in their kitchen with boxes of ingredients for their Earthshot Burgers, playfully teasing one of the hosts about the weight of the vegetable ingredients.

In the video, Prince William explained that he initiated the Earthshot Prize two years ago, with a goal of addressing some of the world’s most pressing environmental issues. He emphasized that urgency and optimism are key in driving action, reflecting the spirit of the prize.

The moment of astonishment occurred when Prince William joined the Sorted Food crew on their Earthshot Burger food truck to serve the plant-based delicacies to unsuspecting customers. The patrons were treated to an eco-friendly meal, made possible by last year’s Earthshot Prize winners, whose innovative products included clean and energy-efficient stoves and biodegradable food packaging.

This was not the first time Prince William raised awareness about the Earthshot Prize initiative. He and Catherine, Princess of Wales, attended The Earthshot Prize ceremony at the MGM Music Hall in Boston, Massachusetts the previous year.
