‘Should be held accountable for militant actions’: PM says resounding no to negotiations with PTI

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has refused to negotiate with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after Imran Khan constituted a committee to hold dialogue with the government. The PM, in a tweet referred to the events of May 9, stating that ‘anarchists and arsonists’ who attack state symbols do not qualify for dialogue.

“Dialogue is deeply embedded in the political process, which helps democracy mature & evolve. Many political & constitutional breakthroughs occurred when political leaders sat across the table to craft a consensus,” he tweeted.
“However, there is a major difference here, the anarchists & arsonists who wear the garb of politicians and attack the symbols of the State do not qualify for a dialogue. They should rather be held to account for their militant actions. This is the prevalent practice even in developed democracies,” the tweet added.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday, while talking about the possibility of negotiating with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), said that negotiations with Imran Khan can be held if he took “corrective measures: apologises to the nation, admits his mistake and promises not to do anything like May 9 in the future.”

Imran Khan on May 27 constituted a seven-member negotiation committee for talks with the incumbent government over elections.

  • PIA’s Boeing 777 seized once again in Malaysia due to unpaid lease dues

PIA’s Boeing 777 seized once again in Malaysia due to unpaid lease dues

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) faced another setback as one of its Boeing 777 aircraft was once again seized at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport over an ongoing lease dispute. The incident marks the second time this specific aircraft has been halted in Malaysia due to payment issues.

The aircraft, bearing the registration number BMH, was acquired by PIA on lease from Malaysia. However, the lease dispute resurfaced, and the airline was unable to settle outstanding dues amounting to $4 million. Subsequently, a local court ordered the seizure of the PIA plane upon receiving the company’s request.

According to ARY News, this is not the first instance in which the national carrier of Pakistan has encountered such a predicament in Malaysia. In 2021, the same Boeing 777 was seized by authorities at the Kuala Lumpur airport due to non-payment of dues. The situation was resolved after diplomatic assurances were given, leading to the release of the aircraft.

Following the recent seizure, the PIA plane was eventually released and safely returned to Pakistan on January 27, accompanied by 173 passengers and crew members. However, the lease dispute appears to have persisted, resulting in the aircraft being seized once again in Malaysia.

The ongoing lease dispute poses significant challenges for Pakistan International Airlines, as it impacts their operations and raises concerns about the financial stability of the airline. PIA authorities have yet to comment on the recent seizure and the steps they plan to take to resolve the dispute.

The incident highlights the importance of maintaining robust lease agreements and ensuring timely payment of dues to avoid disruptions in international aviation operations. Both PIA and Malaysia will likely engage in further negotiations to find a resolution to the long-standing lease dispute and prevent any future incidents that could tarnish the airline’s reputation.

As of now, travelers and stakeholders eagerly await updates from Pakistan International Airlines regarding the situation and hope for a swift resolution to the lease dispute, allowing the airline to resume its operations smoothly.

Dhoni’s CSK thrashes Gujrat Titans to win IPL 16

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) equaled Mumbai Indians’ record of five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles after MS Dhoni’s side triumphed in a last-ball thriller, beating the Gujarat Titans, the defending champions, by five wickets in Monday’s rain-hit final in Ahmedabad.

Put into bat, Gujarat racked up 214 for four after Sai Sudharsan capitalised on a strong start and smashed 96 off 47 balls that included six sixes.

Chasing a revised target of 171 from 15 overs after a lengthy rain interruption, Chennai survived intense drama before Ravindra Jadeja sealed their victory, hitting 10 runs off the last two deliveries.

The final was originally scheduled on Sunday but incessant rain forced the organisers to move the game to its reserve day. After Dhoni won the toss and elected to field, Shubman Gill walked out to bat having smashed three hundreds in his past four innings.

The opener seemed to have luck on his side as Deepak Chahar dropped Gill, the tournament’s leading scorer, at square-leg when the batter was on three. Gill also survived a run out chance when Jadeja could not properly gather the ball before breaking the stumps.

The left-arm spinner, however, made amends in the same over. Jadeja lured Gill (39) out of the crease and Dhoni proved age has not dulled his reflexes and the 41-year-old whipped off the bails in a flash.

Chahar also floored a return catch from Wriddhiman Saha, who smashed 54 before falling to the seamer with Dhoni collecting the top edge. Sudharsan then tore into the attack and hit Matheesha Pathirana for back-to-back sixes in the final over of the innings to inch closer to a hundred but Pathirana denied him the milestone.

Chennai’s openers faced three balls before rain forced them off the field and held up play for two hours and 20 minutes. Chasing a revised target, Ruturaj Gaikwad (26) and Devon Conway (47) plundered 72 runs from the first six overs before Noor Ahmad removed both in the seventh over.

Shivam Dube, who made 32no, kept Chennai in the race but Mohit Sharma removed Ambati Rayudu and Dhoni in successive deliveries.

Chennai needed 13 runs from the last over from Mohit, who conceded three runs from his first four deliveries. Needing 10 off the last two, Jadeja hit Mohit over his head for a six and followed it with a boundary to seal a thrilling victory.

“I was just trying to swing hard because every ball was important,” Jadeja said. “I knew anything could happen, so I was trying to swing hard and hit it straight.”

  • Govt expected to reduce petrol price by Rs10 per litre in a pre-budget relief move

Ahead of the much-anticipated federal budget for 2023-24, set to be announced on June 9, the government is planning to alleviate the burden of inflation by reducing the prices of petroleum products, according to industry officials.

Starting from June 1, it is expected that the price of petrol will decrease by Rs10 per litre due to a decline in the ex-refinery price. Industry insiders have revealed that the ex-refinery price of petrol is projected to decrease by Rs10-12 over the next two weeks. However, due to exchange rate adjustments, the government will likely pass on relief of up to Rs10 per litre to consumers.

Furthermore, industry officials have indicated that the ex-refinery price of diesel is showing a decline of Rs4-5 per litre in the next review. The government may incorporate this decrease during the upcoming fortnightly review, offering relief to diesel consumers.

According to The News, in the previous price review, the government implemented a substantial reduction of Rs30 in the price of diesel. This resulted in a decrease from Rs288 to Rs258 per litre. Similarly, the price of petrol was slashed by Rs12, dropping from Rs282 to Rs270 per litre.

These measures are aimed at mitigating the impact of rising prices on the general public and easing the financial burden faced by individuals as the government prepares to present the federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
