President Alvi advises politicians not to discuss the army

President Arif Alvi on Friday, August 12, stressed against making the Pakistan Army “controversial”. He made these remarks in connection to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr Shahbaz Gill’s comments about the establishment.

“Time and again, I have been telling politicians not to bring the armed forces under discussion,” said the president, adding that it was the armed forces’ job to win the battle against terrorism; they should be respected.

It is pertinent to mention here that Gill was arrested on August 9 for inciting the public against state institutions.

The president, addressing all stakeholders of the country, said that the situation “was not ideal” and that it was crucial for politicians to sit at the talking table.

“Politicians are not sitting together at the talking table; they have to unite. If I don’t see the situation getting better, I will ask them to sit at the table. As the president, I can only ask, not order,” Alvi noted.

  • Pakistan receives Letter of Intent from IMF, moving closer to $1.17 billion tranche

Pakistan receives Letter of Intent from IMF, moving closer to $1.17 billion tranche

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sent Pakistan the Letter of Intent (LoI), bringing the disbursement of the $1.17 tranche for the combined seventh and eighth review closer.

Pakistan will approve the Lol and return it to the IMF. The Extended Fund Facility will now be revived right after IMF board’s approval.

The IMF team and the Pakistani government came to a staff-level agreement (SLA) in July for the conclusion of the combined seventh and eighth tranche.

The international lender estimates that after the Executive Board approves it, around $1,177 million will become accessible, bringing the program’s total payouts to almost $4.2 billion.

But according to a report from last month, before the multilateral lender provides Pakistan with new funding, it was also looking to determine the level of commitment from other sources.

The Washington-based lender wants to make sure that Pakistan won’t experience a funding shortfall following the IMF loan.

For Pakistan, which is desperately seeking dollar inflows in the face of declining foreign exchange reserves, the IMF support is essential in addition to other forms of finance.

  • Hamza Shehbaz files petition to review SC’s verdict declaring Elahi as CM

Hamza Shehbaz files petition to review SC’s verdict declaring Elahi as CM

Former Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Hamza Shehbaz has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court (SC) against the apex court’s July 26 verdict, which declared Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi as the Punjab CM.

Hamza filed the petition through his lawyer Mansoor Awan in which it has been requested that the SC should review the decision of declaring Pervaiz Elahi as the CM of Punjab and the ruling of former Punjab Assembly (PA) Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari should be declared constitutional.

The review petition stated that the court in its order had “failed” to appreciate that when a justice signs a judgement, then to the extent that judgement is not expressly controverted in the separate opinion, that justice remains bound by the judgement he has put a signature to, whereas the order makes the inverse and counter-intuitive inference because other aspects were covered in the separately rendered decision.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader further demanded that a full court be constituted to decide the matters involving the interpretation and application of Article 63-A of the Constitution in this regard.

Earlier, a three-member bench of the SC declared Mazari’s ruling in the Punjab Chief Minister election “illegal” and ruled that Pervaiz Elahi will be the new CM of the province.
