’Great honour, deep-rooted ties’: COAS Bajwa addresses the passing out parade at Sandhurst

Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa expressed the hope that relations between Pakistan and the United Kingdom would reach “historic heights” in the future. He was addressing the passing-out parade at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, on Friday (August 12). General Bajwa is the first Pakistani dignitary who was invited as the chief guest at the military academy.

Pakistan’s army chief began his address by saying that it was a “great honour and privilege” for him to be present during today’s ceremony.

He congratulated the cadets and their families on successfully completing their training at the academy.

“You are part of the finest militaries in the world that has produced great military leaders.”

“Two Pakistani cadets will also be graduating with you today and let me say that I am as proud of you as I am of them,” General Bajwa told the graduating officers and congratulated them and their families.

COAS Bajwa has become the first Pakistani ever to be the representative of the Queen during the sovereign’s parade at the Military Academy Sandhurst.

“Your alma matter is, without a doubt, one of the finest military institutions in the world which have produced some of the great military leaders that this world has seen,” he said, adding that graduating from Sandhurst is a great honour and pride.

“My presence here is a testimony of the deep-rooted relationship that exists between Pakistan and the United Kingdom based on mutual respect and shared values which have been carefully nurtured by both the nations over many decades.”

COAS Bajwa arrives in UK on official visit

Chief of Army Staff arrived in the United Kingdom (UK) on an official visit on early Thursday, August 11.

A day before leaving for the UK, COAS Bajwa had a meeting with Commander Iraqi Navy Lieutenant General Ahmed Jasim Maarij Abdullah Al Zayid on Wednesday, August 10.

ISPR said that matters of mutual interest, regional security issues, and measures to further enhance bilateral defence collaboration were discussed during the meeting.

  • ‘Absolutely no truth,’ PTI denies Imran Khan had a video call with US envoy

‘Absolutely no truth,’ PTI denies Imran Khan had a video call with US envoy

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan allegedly contacted United States (US) Ambassador Donald Blome via a video call. The alleged video call took place on August 4 (Thursday) around 1:45 pm to 2:15 pm, reports Muhammad Saleh Zaafir for The News.

However, Shireen Mazari denied these reports and said this is “part of vilification campaign” planned against Imran Khan.

During the alleged conversation between the US envoy and PTI chief, Khan expressed reservations about the US policy against his then-government in the Centre, reports Khalid Azim Chaudhry for Samaa News. In response, the ambassador said that he has been in the office for only two months. However, he assured Khan that he would convey the message to the Biden administration.

The video call allegedly took place after the meeting between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister (CM) Mahmood Khan and Donald Blome last week in Peshawar. Blome visited the provincial capital to hand over ambulances to the government. Mahmood Khan reportedly arranged a call between his party chief and the US official.

    Absolutely no truth: Shireen Mazari

Former federal minister and PTI leader Shireen Mazari denied that there has been any contact between Khan and Blome.

“There is absolutely no truth in Imran Khan having had any conversation on cell/video link with US envoy Blome. It is part of a vilification campaign planned against IK by an Imported govt terrified of IK politically. We expect more such fake claims and evidence will follow,” tweeted Shireen Mazari.

“We do not comment on what transpires during private diplomatic meetings like the one between Ambassador Blome and the KP chief minister,” said US Embassy spokesman Nick Hersh.

Khan blamed the US for his ouster and accused the Biden administration for the success of the vote of no-confidence against him.

  • SBP’s foreign exchange reserves dropped to $7.83 billion

SBP’s foreign exchange reserves dropped to $7.83 billion

Owing to debt payments, the State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) foreign exchange reserves fell to $7.83 billion as of August 5 from $8.385 billion in the last week.

It is worth noting that this is the lowest level in over three years, according to figures released by the SBP.

Pakistan’s overall foreign exchange reserves were $27.067 billion as of August 2021 but fell to $13.561 billion as of August 5, 2022.

The most recent figures on the country’s foreign exchange holdings came when the reserves were quickly running out due to a $6 billion IMF programme that was stalled and the country was experiencing a lack of external funding.

Due to debt payments and a lack of external finance, the central bank’s foreign reserves decreased by $555 million or 6.6 per cent every week.

To reach $13.561 billion, Pakistan’s total liquid foreign reserves decreased by $648 million, or 4.6 per cent, and its commercial banks’ holdings fell by $5.730 billion, or 1.6 per cent.

The SBP’s reserves are sufficient to cover imports for just over a month, according to The News. The reverse decline was brought on by paying off foreign debt.

According to the central bank, debt repayments may slow down over the following three weeks of this month.

On the other hand, the Pakistani rupee continued its upward trend against the US dollar for the ninth day, adding Rs3.38 to trade at Rs215.50 in intraday trade on Friday. The KSE-100 index likewise witnessed an increase of 386 points.

VIDEO: Promo of re-recorded national anthem of Pakistan

To mark the 75th anniversary of the Independence of Pakistan, Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif will unveil the re-recorded national anthem on August 14 at the national flag hoisting ceremony.

A promo of the re-recorded national anthem has been released.

“Official release of the re-recorded National Anthem on 14th August 2022 by the Prime Minister of Pakistan. First time the National Anthem has been re-recorded since the original release in 1954,” tweeted the official account of Government of Pakistan.

Formed in June 2021, and further mandated by the present Government in April 2022, the Steering Committee has endeavoured to create a re-recording of the original national anthem that reflects updated inclusivity in voices and expression while ensuring the sanctity of the original words and the musical composition.

Happy that project started under my special instructions is now complete: Fawad Chaudhry

Former Information Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry tweeted on August 6 that he is very happy that this project, which was initiated by the Ministry of Information under his special instructions, has been completed.

    National anthem of Pakistan

The stirring, powerful musical score by Ahmed Ghulam Ali Chagla was formally approved in 1949 by then-Prime Minister Quaid-e-Millat, Liaquat Ali Khan. However, the beautiful, inspiring words, as written later by Abu Al-Asar Hafeez Jalandhari were formally approved and then recorded with the music in 1954. That first recording featured a limited number of voices and used the modest technical facilities available at that time. In the succeeding 68 years, there have been major developments in music technology as also the emergence of diverse musical talent across the country.

In planning to produce new vocal and instrumental versions of the unchanged original words and composition, the Steering Committee applied an all-inclusive, gender-balanced approach and enlisted vocalists from diverse regional, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, from all religious faiths and musical genres. 48 musicians from the army, air force and navy bands skilfully played the musical instruments.

    Re-recording of national anthem

The re-recording in 2022 becomes an occasion to celebrate the rich diversity of the nation and reflect the unique national identity and solidarity of the people of Pakistan.

A choir comprising of 30 vocalists rehearsed at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) in Karachi for several weeks, and in June 2022, 125 vocalists representing all provinces, regions and faiths were invited to participate in rehearsals and recordings in Islamabad. These artists were selected after the publication of public notices in leading newspapers inviting expressions of interest resulting in an online registration process. Prior to the recording, all the selected 155 vocalists, including well-known artists, were mentored and rehearsed, and an artist kit was shared with them. This contained lyrics, translations and pronunciation guides. It was imperative that the Re-recording of the National Anthem of Pakistan was rendered correctly while maintaining its historic sanctity and rich legacy. State-of-the-art digital technology was used to record multiple tracks and to complete the mixing and fusion to create clear, distinct, powerful vocal and instrumental versions. A colourful, kaleidoscopic video featuring the new version has also been produced by Num Films.

Steering Committee of the Re-Recording of the National Anthem of Pakistan

The Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Re-Recording of the National Anthem of Pakistan is Senator (r) Javed Jabbar. The 16 members comprise of 10 persons who served on a voluntary basis and 5 senior civil officials and one senior military official. The Secretary of Information Ministry is also a member. The audio sub-committee includes Arshad Mahmud, Brigadier Imran Naqvi (ISPR), Rohail Hyatt, Talha Ali Khushwaha, Ustad Nafees Ahmed, Layaqzada Layaq and Dr. Zulfiqar Qureishi. • ‘I am a professor, not a criminal,’ Shahbaz Gill says he is being subjected to extreme torture

‘I am a professor, not a criminal,’ Shahbaz Gill says he is being subjected to extreme torture

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shahbaz Gill told a court in Islamabad today (Friday, August 12) that he is being subjected to extreme torture in custody.

“I am a professor, not a criminal.” Gill said that he is not permitted to sleep and not even allowed to meet his lawyers. He alleged that no medical examination was conducted as claimed by the authorities. The Islamabad Police had earlier claimed that Gill underwent medical examination at the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and the medical report revealed that he was not tortured.

Shahbaz Gill was taken into custody on August 9 from Bani Gala Chowk for inciting the public against state institutions.

A district and sessions court in Islamabad hearing a sedition case against Gill on Friday (August 12) rejected the prosecution’s request to extend Gill’s physical remand. Instead, the court sent him to jail on judicial remand.

Gill was presented in a court earlier today after the completion of two-day physical remand. On August 10, a court approved a two-day physical remand of Dr Shahbaz Gill in a sedition case.

  • PC running slow? Here are some easiest fixes

PC running slow? Here are some easiest fixes

A slow computer can make life much more difficult than it has to be, whether you’re using it for business or for entertainment. When you can hardly open a window, load a website, or even start up your system, slow performance speed can make your computer worthless.

Spending a few minutes working through some tried-and-true troubleshooting procedures can make life easier if you’ve recently been experiencing issues.

The following steps will help your PC perform smoothly:

    Delete unnecessary images or files.

Sifting through the files and images on your computer might be overwhelming, but by deleting the ones you no longer use, you can speed up the process and prevent your computer from halting or crashing. Clearing out old images, erasing files on desktops, or moving huge files to online backup, are small and sensible methods to help your PC run quicker.

If the process feels burdensome, break it down and take out 30 minutes each day to delete everything unnecessary. You may quickly identify any temporary files or apps sapping your PC’s storage.

    Get an external SSD/HDD

If you take a lot of pictures, you might even want to think about external storage, like Portable SSD. It is ideal for safely saving a large number of your necessary high-resolution videos and photographs rapidly.

    Empty Recycle Bin

Unwanted files will remain in the recycle bin after you have erased them because they are still there. You should routinely empty your recycle bin because it can be taking up space on your computer that could be better used elsewhere.

The more capacity you have on your hard drive, the better your PC will perform. Your computer will also accumulate temporary files, but you may easily get rid of them. The steps are as follows for Windows 10 and 11:

    1. From the Start menu, select Settings
    2. Go to Storage
    3. Open ‘This PC’ and select the hard drive
    4. Click on Temporary Files
    5. Under Recycle Bin, click Empty Recycle Bin
    6. In Temporary Files, click Delete Temporary Files
    7. Under Downloads, select View Downloads and delete unwanted downloads

    Get more RAM

You might need to add more RAM if your computer is displaying error warnings and files are taking a long time to load. Although this is distinct from the total amount of storage on your hard drive, adding more RAM will improve your computer’s multitasking abilities.

Adding RAM can help if you frequently run many programmes at once (opens in a new tab). Installing at least 16GB and 32GB RAM from reputable manufacturers is a good idea. This will help in quicker startups, fewer delays, and smooth app switching.

    Install an anti-virus

Malware infections can cause a computer to run slower than usual. Additionally, you can have unexpected pop-up warnings, a noisy computer, and erratically starting apps. However, the malware won’t always be so obvious.

According to Microsoft, running anti-virus and anti-malware software and keeping it updated is the best way to deal with infections and harmful software. For instance, Windows 11 includes Windows Security, which will check your computer for viruses and other harmful software.

    Defragment disk

In contrast to a solid state drive (SSD), a hard disc drive (HDD) stores data in discrete chunks across the disc. As a result of use and time, relevant data can become dispersed across the entire disc. When you start a software or app, the system then needs more time to locate each piece of data and put it back together for use. Your HDD’s defragmentation can expedite this procedure.

Click the Windows button or Start menu, choose Control Panel, then System and Security to defragment your hard drive. Defragment your hard drive by selecting it under Administrative Tools.

Since SSDs use a completely different technology than HDDs, they do not require defragmentation.

    Disable programs that auto-start

On your computer, certain apps are configured to launch automatically when Windows does. Even though it’s not always simple to know which ones are active, having too many operate concurrently can cause delays.

In order to prevent start-up apps from starting automatically, you must manually change the settings on your computer.

    Disable constant anti-virus checks

You may have observed your system performing slowly when Task Manager was open, and that your antivirus programme frequently occupies a position towards the top of the list. While continually scanning your computer for viruses and malware, antivirus software can cause your system to sluggishly operate.

Read more: 12 important things you need to know before buying a used iPhone

Schedule your antivirus programme to run at times when you’re not likely to be using your computer, such as overnight or during your lunch break, rather than letting it scan whenever it pleases. Depending on the programme you use, you can modify the scan schedule.

No matter what model or generation of PC you are using, by following these instructions you can significantly improve your PC’s performance. Unless you’re still on a Core 2 duo.

‘He looks small, she looks elder’: Sima Taparia under fire for ageist, insensitive remarks on Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas

Sima Taparia of Indian Matchmaking fame is back with the second season of her show on Netflix. While several original cast members returned to the show, such as Pradhyuman Maloo, Aparna Shewakramani and Nadia Jagessar, the highlight of the season was the matchmaker rejecting Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ pair.

In the second episode of the latest season, Taparia asks Jagessar about how her relationship with Shekhar, the bachelor she set her up with, is going. She told the matchmaker that despite giving multiple hints, she doesn’t feel he has the same feelings for her as she does for him. But Taparia knew the truth that Jagessar had flirted with another single at a party and she had not told Shekhar about it. The person whom she flirted with, Vishal, was seven years younger than her.

To prove that Jagessar’s relationship could work, Taparia jokingly gave the example of Chopra and Jonas who have an 11-year age gap. “But I don’t feel it’s a good match, sorry to tell them,” Sima said. She added, “Just they have married, but it’s not a good match. He looks so small and petite in front of her, and she looks elder.” Jagessar let out a shocked laugh in response to what the matchmaking aunty said on the show.

Chopra and Jonas tied the knot in 2018 in a grand Indian wedding after a whirlwind romance. Earlier this year the couple welcomed their first child via surrogate, a baby girl whom they named Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. Clearly, they’re doing just fine, regardless of what a random matchmaker says.

Netizens are calling out Sima for her ageist remarks.

Indian Matchmaking's Sima Taparia Dissing Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas' Match Due to Age Gap Riles Up Twitter

Last year Indian television actress Nausheen Ali Sardar, known for her role in Kkusum, revealed that Sima refused to find her a match because she’s Muslim.

In a recent interview, Nausheen said that she was “blatantly” told by Taparia that she doesn’t cater to Muslims or Catholics.

Speaking to Pinkvilla, Sardar said: “My family was insisting on getting me enrolled on a matrimonial site since the lockdown was going on, and I wasn’t even going on dates or anything as such. So they thought of approaching Sima Aunty, the famous marriage maker from the show Indian Matchmaking.”

“We were in for a shock when she blatantly told us on our face that she did not cater to Muslims or Catholics,” continued the actor.

“I mean it’s 2021! Yes, I am a Muslim, so what? I have an equal right too in society…I had gotten so annoyed at this that I put this entire bitter experience on her social media page where I had asked her to broaden her mindset,” said Sardar further, adding that she later took down the post on her family’s insistence as they feared that someone would try to hurt Nausheen.

In the same interview, Nausheen shared that this wasn’t the first time she had to face discrimination on the basis of her religion.

The actor shared that she was rejected by housing societies because ‘they do not give houses or flats in their building to Muslims.’

“I was shocked! It’s so important to respect every religion and if any society is going to be so rigid in their thoughts, it will be extremely difficult to survive there,” lamented Sardar.

Nausheen made her television debut with Ekta Kapoor’s hit soap opera, Kkusum in 2001.
