NASA releases first ever ‘deepest’ image of the distant universe

The first image from NASA’s new space telescope, which provides the most in-depth view of the universe ever taken, has been made public. It was unveiled during a White House event by United States (US) President Joe Biden.

The James Webb Space Telescope, the most potent observatory ever launched into space, presented its first image on Monday. It provides the most in-depth view of the ‘distant universe’ ever taken. This image is among the telescope’s first-full color images

The image shows stars, with massive galaxies in the foreground and faint and extremely distant galaxies peeking through here and there.

“The James Webb Space Telescope is the world’s premier space science observatory. Webb will solve mysteries in our solar system, look beyond to distant worlds around other stars, and probe the mysterious structures and origins of our universe and our place in it,” said NASA.

Islamabad Police launches patrolling unit with horses

To ensure public safety on the hiking trails and parks in the capital, the Islamabad Police established a “mounted patrolling team” that consists of police officers mounted on horses, reports Saima Shabbir for Arab News. The mounted patrolling unit was launched on June 22.

Beenish Uzair, an assistant superintendent of police, while talking to Arab News said, “We wanted to increase our security surveillance, so that’s why we came up with the idea of introducing a trained horse mounted squad for Margalla Hills and recreational areas such as parks.”

“They will increase the police accessibility across the trail. They can reach up and down the mountain, up and down the trail in significantly less amount of time.”

“Horses do not disturb the environment. They will not tarnish your plants, they will not destroy the terrain, the natural terrain,” the policewoman said. “Even when the duty is going on, it [horse unit] is maintaining the overall natural environment … rather adding to the scenic beauty of the area.”

  • Residential buildings make up 80 per cent of Pakistanis’ wealth: Study

Residential buildings make up 80 per cent of Pakistanis’ wealth: Study

Almost 80 per cent of the wealth accumulated by Pakistani households by the time they are 60 to 65 years old is made up of residential buildings, according to a recent World Bank study.

Between the ages of 25 and 65, the net worth of the typical Pakistani household increases by 60 months’ worth of consumption (5 years).

According to a DAWN report, residential housing makes up the majority of this growth, whereas other types of wealth like land, durables, business and farm values, and financial assets stagnate over time. Early in life, asset accumulation is slower; it picks up between the ages of 40 and 65.

According to a study titled “Life Cycle Savings in a High-Informality Setting — Evidence from Pakistan” published earlier this week, financing elderly consumption will be a significant challenge in the future due to a combination of factors including population ageing, deteriorating family and village risk-sharing networks, and low formal pension coverage.

When compared to other investment options, real estate and land are a safe bet, as evidenced by the fact that households save primarily in these areas. According to the study, housing may be a way to permanently store resources in a way that makes them difficult for other family members to steal or use against them.

According to the study, it might also be a result of a lack of access to other reliable, safe, and high-return long-term saving options. Participation in alternative saving methods may be hindered by low levels of financial literacy, numeracy, and familiarity with formal banking institutions.

The study emphasised that Pakistan has expanded financial inclusion much more slowly than other nearby countries and that these barriers must be removed.

Despite being a safe investment, housing is relatively illiquid, which depletes funds for short-term consumption smoothing. Only 3 per cent of Pakistani adults (15 and older) report being able to rely on savings for emergency funds, while 49 per cent claim it is impossible to come up with emergency funds.

According to 41 per cent of people ages 15 and older, family or friends are typically the primary source of emergency funds; 25 per cent report borrowing for medical expenses.

Theoretically, policies that permit more real estate assets to be used as collateral for loans made through formal financial institutions could lessen the need for liquid precautionary savings and free up funds for retirement savings. However, these programmes might also promote excessive debt and result in evictions.

Scarcity of other secure, liquid savings options may also restrict the income potential of self-employment. Although self-employed people have similar levels of education to wage workers, they are typically older. Nearly half of self-employed people lack education.

Given that the majority of self-employed businesses are started with their own capital, the older age of the self-employed may indicate that the first working years are spent acquiring start-up capital. Only 11 per cent of people aged 15 and older, according to Findex surveys, borrow money to launch or grow a business.

According to the study, expanding options for secure long-term savings outside of the housing through the use of government-sponsored or subsidised old-age savings instruments could lead to greater independence in old age and lessen the burden on younger families.

The study found that the average net worth accumulation accelerates around the age of forty, roughly in the middle of the working years. We demonstrate that active saving likely plays a significant role, even though some of this accumulation may reflect patterns in inheritances.

Around that time, household income growth starts to outpace household consumption growth, and the saving rate rises by 20 percentage points between ages 40 and 65. This suggests that people in that age range may benefit most from programmes designed to encourage formal saving.

‘Community is being persecuted’, Ahmadi spokesperson on arrest of three for performing Qurbani

On Sunday, a first information report (FIR) was filed in Faisalabad against Ahmadi community members for “hurting Muslim sentiments”, reports Dawn. As per the FIR, the religious sentiments of Muslims were hurt by the members of Ahmadi community by performing animal sacrifice.

Saleemuddin, a spokesperson for Jamaat-i-Ahmadiyya Pakistan, told Dawn that three people have been arrested as a result of the FIR. “The community is being persecuted,” he added.

According to the FIR, the people who have filed the complaint were in a mosque following Eid-ul- Azha prayers where they learned from their sources that Ahmadi community members were slaughtering animals inside their home.

They then “climbed the roofs of nearby houses, after which they saw that the Ahmadi community members were sacrificing a goat at one place while other members were cutting the meat of another animal at a different place”.

“The Islamic sentiments of the complainants and other Muslims were hurt by this and [the complainants] recorded a video which can be presented as evidence,” the FIR added.

“By performing a ritual in line with Islamic beliefs and presenting themselves as Muslims despite being Ahmadis, they have committed a cognisable offence, according to Muslim ummah’s belief, and this has grievously hurt Muslim sentiments,” the complainants stated.

The FIR was registered at Faisalabad’s police station Thikriwala against five people under Section 298-C of the Pakistan penal code.

‘Remorse and embarrassment’: Ahsan Iqbal says family who harassed him apologised

Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal said on Sunday that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters, who harassed and chanted slogans at him at a restaurant earlier this week, had come to meet him and apologised for their actions.

Taking to Twitter, Iqbal said, “The family involved in the incident came to Narowal and apologised for their actions in the meeting, expressed remorse and embarrassment.”

“We are all Pakistanis and have a right to disagree with each other but that should not turn into hatred and one must maintain mutual respect,” said Iqbal.

A day earlier, Iqbal said that the incident highlighted the culture PTI Chairman Imran Khan was teaching his followers.

The planning minister said the “disease of extremism and hatred” in society was affecting Pakistan like “cancer”.

Addressing PTI supporters, he urged them to carefully consider if their leader was as sincere to them as they were to him. “Imran has a track record of using people and throwing them away like tissue paper,” he claimed.

“Since over a decade, Khan has been running his ‘chor’ campaign, however, he could not even prove a single allegation during the four years he was in power,” he said, adding that it is the responsibility of a politician to train their workers; however, Khan has failed to do so.

“I think Khan needs a psychologist,” he asserted.

How did Imran, Shehbaz, Bilawal, and Alvi celebrate Eid?

Pakistan celebrates Eid-ul-Azha under tough circumstances with Covid on the rise yet again. With the country’s crucial economic conditions, political leaders urged the nation to revive the spirit of sacrifice and help the poor.

President Dr Arif Alvi offered Eid prayers in his Karachi hometown at the Tooba Masjid.

“I pray to Allah Almighty to accept the Ibadah, Haj and sacrifices of the Pakistani nation and the Muslim Ummah. Amen!”

“Eidul Azha reminds us of the submission and obedience of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and Hazrat Ismail (AS) before the command of Allah Almighty,” said President Alvi.

“Sacrifice is not merely an act of animal slaughter, but its real goal is to sacrifice personal desires for accomplishing a higher purpose. This spirit of sacrifice grants such an ability to human beings that they keep following the righteous path despite the most trying circumstances,” he added.

Alvi said: “As our dear country faces economic challenges, there is a dire need to effectively utilise this spirit of sacrifice.”

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif, along with his son and Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz, offered Eid prayers at his family residence at Jati Umra in Lahore.

Shehbaz said: “Allah Almighty made sacrifice an extraordinary ritual to show immense admiration for the obedience of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and Hazrat Ismail (AS). The real meaning of sacrifice is obedience and submission to Allah. Allah sees the intention of His obedient men and on that basis gives the reward.”

According to the government’s official Twitter account, the prime minister telephoned the president and congratulated him on Eid-ul-Azha. Alvi also congratulated Shehbaz and “the two leaders expressed goodwill towards each other”.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan offered Eid prayers at Bani Gala.

“As we celebrate and thank Allah for his blessings this Eid that commemorates sacrifice, let us remember and pray for those who are without their loved ones & for the people of IIOJK and Palestine suffering oppression under brutal occupation,” said Khan.

In another video shared on Khan’s Instagram handle, he can be seen distributing bags to people.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, meanwhile, offered Eid namaz in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh.

Bilawal said: “Eidul Azha reminds us that determination and sacrifice for the greater good pave the way for success.”
