  • Pfizer says Covid-19 vaccine more than 90 percent effective in kids

Pfizer says Covid-19 vaccine more than 90 percent effective in kids

Kid-size doses of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine appear safe and almost 91 per cent effective at preventing symptomatic infections in 5 to 11-year-olds according to study details released Friday, as the US considers opening vaccinations to that age group.

The shots could begin in early November — with the first children in line fully protected by Christmas — if regulators give the go-ahead.

Details of Pfizer’s study were posted online. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was expected to post its independent review of the company’s safety and effectiveness data later in the day.

Advisers to the FDA will publicly debate the evidence next week. If the agency ultimately authorises the shots, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will make the final decision on who should receive them.

Full-strength Pfizer shots are already authorised for anyone 12 or older, but pediatricians and many parents are waiting for something that can protect younger children from the extra-contagious delta variant and help keep kids in school.

More than 25,000 pediatricians and primary care providers already have signed up to get the shots for the kids.

A Pfizer study tracked 2,268 kids in that age group who got two shots three weeks apart of either a placebo or the low-dose vaccine. Each dose was one-third the amount given to teens and adults.

Researchers calculated the low-dose vaccine was nearly 91 per cent effective, based on 16 virus cases in youngsters given dummy shots versus three cases among vaccinated children. There were no severe illnesses reported among any of the youngsters, but the vaccinated ones had much milder symptoms than their unvaccinated counterparts.

Pfizer’s study of younger kids found the low-dose shots proved safe, with similar or fewer temporary side effects such as sore arms, fever or achiness that teens experience.

The study isn’t large enough to detect any extremely rare side effects, such as the heart inflammation that occasionally occurs after the second dose, mostly in young men.

While children run a lower risk of severe illness or death than older people, Covid-19 has killed more than 630 Americans 18 and under, according to the CDC. Nearly 6.2 million children have been infected with the coronavirus, more than 1.1 million in the last six weeks as the delta mutant surged, the American Academy of Pediatrics says.

Moderna also is studying its vaccine shots in elementary school-age youngsters. Pfizer and Moderna are studying even younger children as well, down to 6-month-olds. Results are expected later in the year.

  • Pakistan denies reports of ‘agreement’ with US to use airspace for military operations in Afghanistan

Pakistan denies reports of ‘agreement’ with US to use airspace for military operations in Afghanistan

In a statement by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the spokesperson stated that “no such understanding was in place”. The statement said that Pakistan and the United States (US) have longstanding cooperation on regional security and counter-terrorism and the two sides remain engaged in regular consultations.

However, a report published in CNN suggested that the US administration has informed that the country is nearing an agreement with Pakistan to use its airspace to conduct military and intelligence operations in Afghanistan.

The report cites three sources familiar with the details of a classified briefing with members of the American Congress, held on Friday. It states that Pakistan had expressed the desire to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the US government in exchange for assistance with its own counter-terrorism efforts and help in managing the relationship with its neighbour India.

However, negotiations between both countries are ongoing and nothing has yet been finalised.

The US military currently uses Pakistan’s airspace as part of ongoing intelligence-gathering efforts, but there is no formal agreement and without it, the US has the risk of Pakistan refusing entry to US military aircraft and drones to Afghanistan.

One source said that an agreement was discussed when US officials visited Pakistan, but it’s not yet clear what Pakistan wants or how much the US would be willing to give in return.

Prior to this revelation, in an interview, Prime Minister (PM) of Pakistan Imran Khan said that Pakistan would absolutely not allow the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to use bases on its soil for cross-border counter-terrorism missions after American forces withdraw from Afghanistan.

Moreover, National Security Adviser (NSA) Moeed Yusuf said that Pakistan has not given a chance to the US to demand airbases after withdrawal from Afghanistan, and categorically said, “Pakistan’s position is that it cannot provide airbases to the US.”

The US withdrew its troops from Afghanistan on August 31.

The rivalry between Juventus and Inter became more bitter after the scandal of Calciopoli.

Juventus lost the Serie A title last season after 9 years. Inter Milan dominated the Serie A and won the title breaking Juventus’s 9 consecutive title win streak. • ‘Rock bands can’t measure up to her 1 song’: Ahmad Butt slams Ali Azmat for comments on grandmother Noor Jehan

‘Rock bands can’t measure up to her 1 song’: Ahmad Butt slams Ali Azmat for comments on grandmother Noor Jehan

Pakistan’s pop singer Ali Azmat recently appeared on Ahmad Pansota’s show and talked about Pakistani Music and Arts. He also talked about the veteran singer Noor Jehan, a musical legend who is celebrated transnationally.

While Talking about the music industry of Pakistan’s transition over the years, the Jazba Junoon singer mentioned: “In my childhood, Noor Jehan used to sing on a show draped in Saari with big earrings and extra makeup on. We used to hate that woman.”

Passing ageist comments, he said: “Looked like a meatball, she was an old age woman at that time and we used to think that it’s not necessary for us to watch it.”

Noor Jehan’s grandson Ahmed Ali Butt also reacted to singer’s remarks about his grandmother.

Taking to Instagram, the Parey Hut Love actor shared a lovely throwback photo of Noor Jehan and responded to Ali Azmat’s comments, saying his recent remarks were just in ‘bad taste’ especially when that person is no longer alive.

He wrote “My Late Grandmother Madam Noor Jehan ‘Is’ the greatest artist of the subcontinent and that’s a fact.

“I have always respected Ali Azmat as an artist and as a friend. He is one of Pakistan’s biggest rock star, his outspoken attitude has always been his trademark but his recent remarks over Noor Jehan, were just in bad taste especially when that person is no longer alive.”

Meanwhile, Azmat took to Instagram and shared a video in which he said, “My respect, admiration and love for Madam and her family does not need any validation from people who edit old videos to create controversies.”

  • ‘Cheap theatrics to grapple with lost fame, insecurities’: Noor Jehan’s daughter Mina Hasan hits out at Ali Azmat

‘Cheap theatrics to grapple with lost fame, insecurities’: Noor Jehan’s daughter Mina Hasan hits out at Ali Azmat

After Ali’s derogatory comments on Noor Jehan, the late legend’s daughter and designer Mina Hasan has penned an elaborate note for his insensitive remarks.

Mina started off by reiterating the reasons behind Malika-e-Tarannum’s excessive fame and Azmat’s ‘fame lost’. “Madam Noor Jehan is a name synonymous with greatness,” she assured. “A woman that did more for her country and her art than most can dream of doing in a lifetime. She received every accolade known to mankind and while leaving us, she was also rewarded in death to depart for her Heavenly abode on the most blessed of days.”

She shared that while explaining popular culture relevant to his generation, Azmat had effortlessly stooped to an abhorrent low.

Taking a giant dig at the Sayonee singer, Hasan concluded, “Not all primates evolved to become better creatures. Some regressed to lower life forms, faded into irrelevance; invoked cheap theatrics to grapple with the fame lost and lived out their remaning days consumed by their insecurities.”
