IBA reinstates expelled student who spoke out against alleged harassment on campus

The Insitute of Business Administration (IBA) reinstated Mohammad Gibrail, a student who was expelled by the university administration a week ago for speaking out against the alleged harassment incident on social media.

The decision was taken by IBA’s Executive Director (ED) of the institution S Akbar Zaidi after hearing the appeal against the Disciplinary Committee’s decision, which took place on September 29. Zaidi reinstated Gibrail as a student with immediate effect, as per Geo News.

Jibran Nasir, the lawyer for Gibrail, confirmed that the student had been reinstated. He tweeted, “Congratulations to all students! Gibrail’s admission on appeal to [IBA, ED] has been restored unconditionally,” adding that the ED had also “committed reforms to make IBA safer, give students representation in admin affairs and expeditious and transparent inquiry into the harassment case”.

During the hearing, Gibrail reaffirmed his respect for the IBA and the Executive Director and reportedly withdrew those parts of his appeal which were unrelated to his expulsion.

On August 25, Gibrail had reported the alleged sexual harassment incident on a public Facebook post. He stated, “This was actually the incident of workplace harassment that took place in front of my eyes in IBA’s Finance Department where I saw a person whom, I inquired his identity late, named Tanveer yelled at a female employee of IBA in that Finance Department and burst on her.”

After this, students of IBA started protesting against the administration to take notice of this issue. Despite looking into the matter, IBA’s Disciplinary Committee expelled Gibrail a few days after the incident.

Delivering verdict in two months goes against rights of suspect: Zahir’s parents approach SC

Zahir Jaffer’s parents have challenged Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) bail rejection by approaching the Supreme Court (SC), reported Geo News.

Zahir is the prime suspect in Noor Mukadam’s murder case.

Advocate Khawaja Harris filed a petition on behalf of his clients Zakir Jaffer and Asmat Adamjee, arguing that delivering a verdict in two months goes against the rights of the suspects and the principles of a transparent trial.

According to the petition, a complete challan of the case has not yet been presented in the trial court, while the high court went beyond its jurisdiction by directing to complete the trial in two months.

Furthermore, the petition argued that the police investigation was biased and not impartial. According to Zahir’s parents’ lawyers, the defendants will not be able to defend themselves properly in prison as it will be difficult for them to communicate with them being in prison.

Last week, the IHC had rejected the bail pleas of both of Zahir’s parents and also ordered the court to complete the trial within eight weeks.

However, in IHC’s detailed verdict, it was ruled that both Zakir and Asmat committed the crime of aiding Noor’s murder.

Ex-Facebook employee accuses company of harming children

A former Facebook employee told US lawmakers that Facebook’s sites and apps “harm children, stoke division and weaken our democracy”, BBC has reported.

Frances Haugen, a 37-year-old former product manager turned whistleblower said during a US Senate hearing that the company consistently put profit over moral responsibility.

“The company’s leadership knows how to make Facebook and Instagram safer, but won’t make the necessary changes because they have put their astronomical profits before people,” she said adding, “no one currently holding Mark accountable but himself.”

Founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg has rejected the accusations, saying recent coverage of painted a “false picture” of the company.

VIDEO: Climate change protester disrupts Louis Vuitton show in Paris

A protester interrupted a Louis Vuitton fashion show in Paris on Tuesday by walking down the ramp with a banner protesting the impact of excessive consumption on the environment, Reuters reported.

The woman with the banner, which read “Overconsumption = Extinction”, was representing Amis de la Terre France, Youth for Climate and Extinction Rebellion. She walked down the same path as the models, causing a stir in the audience, a Reuters witness said.

The protester was wrestled to the ground by security officials before being led away.

The disruption did not interrupt the show as models marched down the runway.

The show itself had a punk flavour, with sleeves ripped off suit jackets, leaving arms bare, and accessories including studded boots and chainmail headpieces.

Amis de la Terre France said it targeted the LVMH-owned (LVMH.PA) label to throw a spotlight on the issue of overconsumption.

“LVMH is the world leader of luxury and has a responsibility when it comes to trends that push the textile industry to constantly renew collection faster and produce more,” Alma Dufour, a group spokesperson, told Reuters.

‘They would not have done this to India’: Holding criticises ECB’s decision over not touring Pakistan

Former West Indies pacer Michael Holding has strongly criticised England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over the cancellation of the scheduled tour of Pakistan, saying it smacks of ‘western arrogance’.

“What that signal sends to me is the same western arrogance,” said Holding while receiving Peter Smith Award.

“I will treat you how I feel like treating you – it doesn’t matter what you think, I will just do what I want.”

“Four days in Pakistan [was all they would have spent], I am absolutely sure they would not have done that to India.”

“You know why? Because India is rich and powerful. I am in total agreement with Mike Atherton and [cricket writer] George Dobell, who wrote articles condemning England and the ECB,” he added.

Holding reminded ECB about Pakistan’s last tour of England during Covid-19 peak.

The former cricketer further said: “They were going for four days. Pakistan went to England [in 2020] before vaccines were available for six, seven weeks, something like that. They stayed, they played their cricket, they were in that bubble.”

“I was in that bubble and it wasn’t fantastic but it was better than going out into society, where we know Covid was and without any vaccinations available to anyone.”

“They stayed, they played, and honoured what England wanted them to honour, and now you have an opportunity to try and repay them to a small degree,” he concluded.
