  • Antibodies from Sinovac’s Covid-19 shot fade after six months, booster helps: study

Antibodies formed by Sinovac Biotech’s Covid-19 vaccine drop below a key threshold from around six months after a second dose for most recipients, although a third shot could have a strong boosting impact, a lab study has revealed.

According to details, Chinese researchers reported the results from a study of blood samples from healthy adults aged between 18-59 in a paper published on Sunday, which has not been peer-reviewed, reports Reuters.

For participants receiving two doses, two or four weeks apart, only 16.9% and 35.2% respectively still had a level of neutralising antibodies above the threshold six months after the second dose, the paper said.

Those readings were based on data from two groups involving more than 50 participants each, while the study gave third doses to a total of 540 participants.

When participants in some cohorts were given a third dose, about six months after the second, neutralising antibody levels after a further 28 days had increased around 3-5 fold from the levels seen four weeks after the second dose, the study showed.

The study was conducted by researchers at disease control authorities in Jiangsu province, Sinovac, and other Chinese institutions.

Researchers notified the study did not test the antibodies’ effect against more contagious variants, and that further research was required to assess antibody duration after a third shot.

  • Govt of Punjab responsible for releasing my attacker, not judiciary: Khadija Siddiqi

Khadija Siddiqi, a young lawyer who was stabbed 23 times by Shah Hussain in 2016, questioned the Punjab government for the early release of her attacker.

Shah Hussain was released from jail on 17 July without completing his five years in jail term. He got a 1.5 year remission.

“Many people raising questions on the order of the High Court, given by Justice Shan Gul, just to clarify, they approached the court for 1 month of further remission which was NOT granted by the court,” said Khadija in a tweet, adding: “The @GovtofPunjabPK had already granted extraordinary REMISSION of 1.5 years! State to be blamed.”

“Dear State, will you break the silence and hold jail authorities accountable?” she asked.

In another tweet, Khadija tagged Punjab Prisons Minister Fayyaz-ul-Hassan Chohan and wrote: “You are responsible for allowing early release of my attacker.”

Speaking on Geo News programme AAj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath’, Khadija said that she has no idea on what basis Shah Hussain got a remission of one and a half years. “It is evident that influence has been used in this case.” She said that when she came to know about the release of Hussain through unofficial sources, she wrote to CCPO Lahore that she needs security because her life is in danger as her attacker will be out but she did not get any response.

Karachi-based lawyer Jibran Nasir, while talking exclusively to The Current, said that the government needs to explain how and why Shah Hussain has been released without completing his five year sentence.

Siddiqi was stabbed 23 times on a busy Lahore street while she was picking her six-year-old sister from school on May 3, 2016.

  • German gymnasts wear full-body suits at Olympics to promote freedom of choice

German gymnasts wear full-body suits at Olympics to promote freedom of choice

The German women’s gymnastics team wore full-body suits in qualifications at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday instead of their traditional bikini cut version to encourage all women to wear what makes them feel comfortable and to promote freedom of choice, reports Reuters.

According to the German Gymnastics Federation, this act is against sexualisation in gymnastics. The aim is to present aesthetically- without feeling uncomfortable, they added in a tweet.

The International Gymnastics Federation said that attire with full or half sleeves and leg coverings are allowed in the competition, as long as the colour matches the leotard (one-piece garment with no legs).

Sarah Voss, one team member, first wore the suit while competing for the European championships in April.

“We want to make sure everyone feels comfortable and we show everyone that they can wear whatever they want and look amazing, feel amazing, whether it is in a long leotard or a short one,” she said.

After this, the entire team decided to participate in the multi-international sports event in red and white unitards and leggings extending to the ankles, in contrast to the costume worn by many other female gymnasts.

Moreover, their mutual decision earned them praise from fellow competitors in Tokyo.

Until now women and girls have only covered their legs in international competitions for religious reasons.
