  • ‘Not answerable to Maryam or Nawaz’: Bilawal

‘Not answerable to Maryam or Nawaz’: Bilawal

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Wednesday that the PPP was not answerable to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice-President Maryam Nawaz or PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and that his perspective remained unchanged.

Addressing a press conference in Badin, the PPP chairman acknowledged that he had torn the show-cause notice and there was no change in his point of view on the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).

“We are not answerable to Maryam or Mian Sahab. We are answerable to the PPP and the PPP’s workers and we think the real joy will be in doing politics together with the PPP’s workers,” says Bilawal.

Bilawal said that Shehbaz Sharif was the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly and the PML-N president, thus the PPP would consider his opinion and statements to be official PML-N policy and conduct its politics according to that.

“Instead of opposing the PPP, our friends in the opposition should target the government,” added Bilawal.

In response to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s concerns about the worsening law and order situation in Sindh, Bilawal said that the law and order situation in Sindh has improved, a move that has been made possible with the help of police.

“Sindh police have the full potential to restore peace in the province,” Bilawal said. “The interior minister [Sheikh Rasheed] is ready to give a lecture about another province but is not ready to protect journalists in Islamabad.”

Bilawal also condemned the attack on Islamabad-based journalist Asad Toor a day ago and said that journalists in Sindh are also being targeted for speaking the truth.

“We demand the highest level of investigation into the attack on journalists,” said Bilawal.

Israeli Iron Dome shoots down own drones during intense fighting

Israel’s Iron Dome accidentally shot down an Israeli military drone during Hamas missile interceptions in the Gaza strip, Israel Defence Force (IDF) told local media.

“As part of the round of fighting in Gaza and as part of the defence of the country’s skies, an IDF skylark drone was shot down by Iron Dome,” said an IDF spokesperson, adding that the incident is under investigation.

Skylark drones are unmanned aerial vehicles that IDF use for intelligence, surveillance and examination missions. The report also stated that IDF is now worried and questioning whether the defence system is capable for long-term fighting without harming their resources.

Iron Dome has intercepted thousands of rockets fired from Hamas and managed to take down drones from the enemy. Designed in 2011 to prevent rockets, artillery and mortar rockets, the Iron Dome was made by a company called Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Aerospace Industries with US support.

The Israel Ministry of Defence, earlier this year, announced that they upgraded the Iron Dome, which will let the country fight and defend in skirmishes in future. The upgrades were tested against a huge number of rockets, missiles and unmanned weapons.

The system defended almost 90% of the rockets fired by the Qaseem brigade of Hamas, which significantly reduced human loss in Israel. In retaliation, IDF launched 1,500 airstrikes that killed 243 people in Palestinian.

Siddiqui questioned: “Why are we turning into morally depraved monsters? Abhorrent!”

Armeena Rana Khan said: “Sunita Masih, a Christian girl from Faisalabad, aged just 14 has allegedly been gang raped. She was asked to recite the Kalma. When she refused her hair was shaved off. So, lots of activism for the innocents elsewhere, great but how about raising our voices here too?”

“Appalled. Speechless,” said Faysal Quraishi. “Assailants of such crimes should be granted the highest form of punishment so that they can be an example for all those who even think of committing such atrocious crimes.”

Actor and television host Nadia Jamil took to social media and said: “I urge all of us on media to protect the dignity of the child Sunita Masih by blurring her face. It will cause further trauma to her to be b exposed.”

“I plea to Imran Khan to ensure she is provided physical/mental health care immediately and to see that the perpetrators are arrested, punished,” she appealed to Prime Minister Imran Khan .

In another tweet, Jamil requested PM Imran to look at the case of the 14-year-old. “She needs care 4 her physical wounds and mental health. She needs her face protected. She is too young to be exposed publicly by media. Perpetrators should be arrested immediately amd punished as soon as possible,” wrote Jamil.

“This is just shameful and unbelievably inhumane. We cannot let minorities and CHILDREN suffer these atrocities for reasons which are incomprehensible. We need implementation of law and strict punishments so we can put an end to this nonsense once and for all,” wrote Hassan Sheheryar on Twitter.

Ushna Shah also addressed the incident, while sharing Armeena Rana’s tweet on her Instagram stories, she said: “Apna girehbaann quite soiled.”

Alizeh Shah also condemned this act of brutality, saying: “I don’t know where these people are heading to by doing such sinful acts.”

“Rape culprits k law ka kya bana? Implementation ka kya hua,” questioned Maryam Nafees.

Zoya Nasir apologised from Sunita for “what these monsters” dis to her.

’PDM is not Shahid Khaqan’s bonded slave’: Kaira

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Qamar Zaman Kaira said that the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) is not Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s personal slave or bonded labour that he can impose his views on the Opposition alliance.

Kaira was talking to anchorperson Shahzeb Khanzada on Geo News’ programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath’.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had said he would quit PDM if PPP was allowed to rejoin the Opposition alliance unconditionally.

Kaira also said that while Shehbaz Sharif is making efforts to unite the Opposition, Shahid Khaqan was tearing it apart.

Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday said Shehbaz Sharif’s dinner had nothing to do with PDM.

PPP leadership also urged Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to take back his words against the party.

Fazl on Tuesday said the PPP and the Awami National Party (ANP) could rejoin the PDM if they apologie to the Opposition alliance for going against its decisions.

Fazl said both the PPP and ANP had been given sufficient time to get back to the PDM leadership, but they have not done so.

“There are currently no proposals to invite PPP and ANP at the PDM meeting on May 29,” Fazl said. He added that during the upcoming PDM meeting, the Opposition leaders will decide the future of the PPP and ANP in the alliance.

Around Rs 827.2 billion were reportedly drawn from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) during Ramazan and Eid holidays, through approximately 63.2 million transactions.

Only on Eid, Rs137.8 billion were withdrawn through 11.6 million ATM transactions. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) collaborated with commercial banks to make ATM services available for people on holidays and other festivals.

SBP formed a special team through which they monitored ATMs during Ramazan and Eid as there is a high demand for cash during these festivals.

Besides, the banks also managed to sustain an average uptime of 96.5 percent which further improved to 98 percent during Eid-ul-Fitr holidays earlier this month. The special team performed nationwide operations on all banks through both on-site and off-site inspections and monitoring.

During these holidays, only 500 complaints were received from the public and were immediately resolved. SBP praised the efforts of the banks to maintain the availability of services during these festivals.

“SBP firmly resolves to keep facilitating the public and carrying out similar exercises in future as well to facilitate the general public at large,” read a statement from the bank.
