Twitter goes crazy after Indians use hair dryers, steam irons to dry pitch

Twitter on Sunday lost it after the staff at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, India used hair dryers and steam irons to dry the pitch after rain delayed the start of the first Twenty International (T20I) between India and Sri Lanka.

As per the details, in the beginning, it just looked like a passing shower, but then it was pouring down minutes. Around 8 pm though the heavens relented, the rain had already affected the state of the pitch with wet patches.

Just when ground staff started its repair work, rain returned to make things worse. This time though, more care was taken with an extra cover being placed on the 22 yards. However, the damage was already done, and when it all cleared around 8:45 pm, the ground staff much to everyone’s surprise brought out a hair dryer, steam iron, and vacuum cleaner to dry the wet patches.

Here’s what Twitter has to say about it:

Indian captain Virat Kohli had opted to field first after winning the toss. However, just as pacer Jasprit Bumrah was getting ready to bowl the first delivery, rain arrived and stopped the play.

The match was eventually called off due to a damp pitch. The teams now head to Indore for the second T20I on January 7.

  • ‘You messed up,’ Gen Bajwa told US secretary of state: ISPR chief

‘You messed up,’ Gen Bajwa told US secretary of state: ISPR chief

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Major General Asif Ghafoor has quoted Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa as telling United States (US) Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that White House’s misadventure in Baghdad was detrimental to efforts aimed at regional peace.

“The region is making progress towards peace from a very bad situation and the Baghdad incident is detrimental to the peace efforts in the region,” the ISPR chief quoted the COAS as telling Pompeo as US-Iran tensions soar following the killing of top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani and other officials in a US President Donald Trump-ordered drone strike on Friday in Baghdad.

Speaking to a private media outlet, Maj Gen Ghafoor also said that Pakistan will only play the role of a peacemaker and not take sides in the ongoing conflict between the two countries.

“Pakistan has defeated terrorism on its territory and will not allow its soil to be used against any other country.”

According to Geo News, to a question regarding claims made in Indian media that Pakistan’s policy towards Iran has changed in the light of US resumption of military training program for Pakistan Army, the ISPR chief deemed it “Indian propaganda” and “fake news”.

“Islamabad and Washington were in talks for the last four or five months over the issue and linking it as Pakistan aligning with US is Indian propaganda,” he said. “Pakistan Army is a responsible and professional force and has exercised restraint despite provocative statements from Indian leadership.”

The military spokesperson also said that Gen Bajwa had an important role to play in regional security and Afghan peace process, and Pakistan didn’t want to see another conflict in the region.

“Pakistan would oppose any thing that is affecting Afghan reconciliation process as it needs focus from all parties. We are of the view that dialogue is the way forward to achieve lasting peace,” he said.

Saad Rafique injured after fire breaks out in jail

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Saad Rafique has sustained minor injuries after a small fire broke out in Lahore Camp Jail’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) barracks, The News reported.

According to reports, the fire broke out due to short circuit in an electric heater outside the room of former prime minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif’s aide Fawad Hassan Fawad, causing panic among prisoners.

Due to a lack of jail staff, Rafique started banging the bars of his cell and sustained a minor head injury when his head hit against the bar. The jail doctor gave him first-aid after which he was shifted back to the barracks.

The fire was extinguished by the jail administration after switching off the main power supply in the meantime.

According to Jail Superintendent Asadullah Warraich, it was a “small fire” that was put off by the staff and the PML-N leader got injured “because he panicked”.

Iqra Aziz, Yasir Hussain’s ‘Jhooti’ sparks outrage for trivialising domestic abuse

Iqra Aziz is returning to the silver screen with a new drama titled Jhooti. The drama also features her real-life beau Yasir Hussain as well as Ahmed Ali Butt, with whom she will be sharing the screen for the first time.

The trailer for the drama, directed by Ramish Rizvi, was released during Meray Paas Tum Ho‘s Episode 21 Saturday night. While the first teaser of the drama was intruiging as it showed Iqra playing a strong, resilient woman, the second teaser was the one which was problematic because it showed Iqra playing a woman who fakes being domestically abused. The teaser sparked outrage and drew the irk of netizens who took to social media to voice their frustation.

  • Mehwish Hayat tells Aamir Liaquat to ‘man up’ after he calls her an ‘item girl’

Mehwish Hayat tells Aamir Liaquat to ‘man up’ after he calls her an ‘item girl’

Aamir Liaquat is no stranger to controversy. Every now and then, the TV show host pokes fun at someone or passes questionable comments landing him in the line of fire.

Recently, Aamir took a dig at Mehwish Hayat for condemning the US airstrike that killed Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in Iraq.

Aamir remarked that just because Mehwish received a Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, the “item girl” should not pass such statements and should keep Pakistan’s foreign policy in mind. He added that if Soleimani was alive, “would he have invited her to perform in Iran?”

Aamir’s comments certainly did not go down well with Mehwish who hit back with a strong reply and asked the MNA to man up. She also threw shade by asking him what he had done about the case he was filing against her for Load Wedding.

Meanwhile, this is what Mehwish had tweeted with regard to Soleimani.

This is not the first time that Liaquat has picked on the actor or been openly critical of her. He previously bashed her for her performance at the Hum Awards held in October last year.

Before that Aamir had said that he would take legal action against Mehwish Hayat and Fahad Mustafa for defaming him in Load Wedding.

It appears that Mehwish’s Tamgha-e-Imtiaz is a sore point for Aamir.

After the incident, Fawad Chaudhry criticised Lucman, saying that Lucman cannot be considered as a journalist.

Fawad had earlier tweeted that ‘so called journalists’ malign ministers and respectable people for viewership.

“There was a scuffle that broke out. A small fight broke out. In a fight, as usually is the case, he may have got one (slap) in, I may have hit one,” said the minister during Geo News talk show “Naya Pakistan” on Sunday evening.

“I have been a minister earlier as well. I will not tolerate personal attacks against myself. We are all human beings and will react when someone makes such false allegations.”

  • The quest for the perfect French Toast in Lahore

The quest for the perfect French Toast in Lahore

Winters and brunches go hand in hand. And nothing better than French Toast for the perfect sweet ending to a satisfying, or not so satisfying brunch. While, most cafes in Lahore have french toasts on their menu, finding the perfect French toast in town was quite a feat and I had a go through a couple to find the one.

Read on for a comparison of French Toasts available in Lahore.

    Urban Kitchen

Urban Kitchen has French Toast available only on Sunday as part of their Sunday brunch which is a pity because they truly are delightful. The bread is delicious and I’d honestly just go back for that. And the fact that the toppings do not include Nutella is the cherry on top.

    Thanda Garam

Thanda Garam knows how to do their french toast because the french toast they had were divine – the best out of the lot. They were crispy from the outside and fluffy from the inside. The cream that accompanied was so delectable that I had to stop myself from licking clean the plate. The only downside was that there was too much Nutella – but then again those who love Nutella will absolutely love this. I’d request the restaurant to make Nutella optional and add a jam option as well – Strawberry or Apple Jam with these french toast would be delightful.

    Jade

As far as Nutella French Toast are concerned, Jade was the pioneer of these in the city. But over the years, I feel that Jade’s french toast have become boring as well as oily. They are often too crispy on the outside and not as well cooked from the inside. The bread is also pretty thick which is why I’ve stopped having french toast from Jade.

    Chaaye Khana

Just like Jade, Chaaye Khana also used to do good french toast. But after trying Thanda Garam and Urban Kitchen, Chaaye Khana’s french toast began to taste mediocre – there is tooo much bread and nothing with it. No cream, jam or maple syrup which makes the french toast dry and boring.

    Sasha’s

The first time I went to Sasha’s, I quite enjoyed their french toasts. But the successive visit wasn’t as good. The bread was extra caramelized which made it difficult to chew – it was like eating burnt toffee. Add to that, maple syrup and nutella. The end result wasn’t very pleasing and I never went back to Sasha’s.

In short, Urban Kitchen and Thanda Garam do the best french toast in town.
