  • McDonald’s to acquire franchised stores in Israel

McDonald’s to acquire franchised stores in Israel

McDonald’s Corporation said Thursday it will acquire Alonyal, which owns 225 McDonald’s restaurants in Israel which have been hit by calls for a boycott over Israeli genocide in Gaza.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. McDonald’s said in a statement the deal was subject to conditions which it did not identify.

Alonyal has operated McDonald’s restaurants in Israel for more than 30 years, today owning 225 franchised properties with more than 5,000 employees, who will be retained after the sale.

In presenting its 2023 earnings report in February, McDonald’s said the war in Gaza that began in October with the Hamas attacks on Israel was weighing on its results.

McDonald’s was targeted with boycott calls after the franchised restaurants in Israel offered thousands of free meals to Israeli soldiers.

“We recognize that families in their communities in the region continue to be tragically impacted by the war and our thoughts are with them at this time,” Chief Executive Chris Kempczinski said in an analyst call.

He said the impact of the boycott was “meaningful,” without elaborating.

McDonald’s fourth quarter sales disappointed analysts. In franchised restaurants outside the United States, comparable sales fell 0.7 percent.

“Obviously the place that we’re seeing the most pronounced impact is in the Middle East. We are seeing some impact in other Muslim countries like Malaysia, Indonesia,” said Kempczinski.

This also happened in countries with large Muslim populations such as France, especially for restaurants in heavily Muslim neighborhoods, he said.

McDonald’s shares were down nearly 2 percent in after-market trading Thursday.

Don’t test my patience, Shaheen Afridi shares Instagram story

Pakistan cricket team’s former captain Shaheen Shah Afridi shared a story on Instagram which states “don’t test my patience”.

Late at night, Shaheen shared a video story with the words, “Don’t ever put me in a position where I have to show how cruel and merciless I can be! Don’t test my patience because I might be the kindest and sweetest person you’ve ever met, but once I reach my limit, you’ll see me do the unthinkable.”

The former captain’s Instagram story hinting that all is not well between the players of the national team. Shaheen was only given the captaincy in the series against New Zealand, where the green shirts lost.

During the ongoing training camp in Kakul, he was relieved of the captaincy while Babar Azam was once again given the responsibility of leadership while PCB also issued a press release in the name of Shaheen, on which the fast bowler strongly protested.

The return of Babar Azam has fueled the news of grouping in the team before the T20 World Cup.

After the poor performance of the national team in the 50 overs World Cup in India last year, Babar Azam left the leadership of all three formats. Later the board assigned Test captain Shan Masood and Shaheen the responsibility of T20 format while the captain for ODIs was not announced.

  • Indian government involved in killing of Pakistani nationals

Indian government involved in killing of Pakistani nationals

The Indian government has been involved in killing people in Pakistan since its adoption of a recent strategy to eliminate threats to Indian governments on foreign soil.

A report printed in The Guardian revealed that India’s foreign intelligence agency allegedly began killing ‘hostiles’ as part of its new national security strategy in 2019, after the Pulwama attack in India when it was decided in Indian security circles that they needed a pre-emptive strategy.

Recently, intelligence officials in Pakistan claimed almost 20 killings have been committed by Indian government on Pakistani soil. Mostly, people related to the Khalistani movement or Kashmir militant groups, have been targeted.

Indian officials also stated that their new rogue strategy was inspired by the 2018 killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Turkish soil. “What the Saudis did was very effective. You not only get rid of your enemy but send a chilling message, a warning to the people working against you,” he said.

The killings in Pakistan are carried out by Indian intelligence sleeper cells in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). For instance, in the case of killing of Shahid Latif, the commander of Jaish-e-Mohammed, there were many failed attempts to kill him but ultimately it was an illiterate 20-year-old Pakistani who carried out the assassination in Pakistan in October, allegedly recruited by RAW in the UAE, where he was working for a minimal salary in an Amazon packing warehouse.

  • Kakar out, Gillani in; PPP takes final decision

Kakar out, Gillani in; PPP takes final decision

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has nominated former prime minister and party loyalist Yousaf Raza Gillani as its candidate for the slot of Senate Chairman on Thursday.

Jamil Soomro, political secretary of PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, issued a notification on Thursday, putting to rest all speculation that the party will nominate another former Prime Minister, Anwaar Kakar, for the covered post.

Following an agreement between the PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on certain positions, like the post of president, Senate chairman, and governorship of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, were given to the PPP. However, the posts of Senate deputy chairman, National Assembly speaker, and governorship of Sindh and Balochistan were provided to PML-N.

The former prime minister has the support of a total 54 senators, including 24 from the PPP, 19 from PML-N, four from the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), three from the Awami National Party (ANP), three independents, and one from the National Party.

However, if he gets the support of three MQM-P and five JUI-F senators, this number will become 64, which means Yousaf Raza Gillani will be in a comfortable position to get elected to the seat of Senate Chairman.

On the other hand, the PTI has the support of 20 senators and one each from the BNP and PML-Q, taking the tally to 22.

  • Taliban government in Kabul urges Islamabad to show restraint over Afghan migrants

Taliban government in Kabul urges Islamabad to show restraint over Afghan migrants

Taliban authorities urged Pakistan on Thursday not to make a unilateral decision on repatriating Afghan migrants, saying they shouldn’t be “harassed,” after reports Islamabad would renew an eviction campaign.

More than half a million Afghans fled Pakistan last year after the former government ordered undocumented migrants to leave or face arrest as Islamabad-Kabul relations soured over security.

Islamabad initially set a November 2023 deadline but official sources, who asked not to be identified, told AFP in March that Pakistan is gathering data on Afghan migrants – including those residing legally in the country – ahead of a renewed push slated to start after the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

A final decision has not been made on a repatriation push, according to Pakistan officials, but the Afghan deputy minister for refugees urged restraint in a meeting with a top Pakistani diplomat in Kabul.

“The issue of refugees is bilateral and decisions regarding them should be made through an understanding between both countries,” said Abdul Rahman Rashed, according to a ministry statement on social media platform X on Thursday.

“They shouldn’t be harassed until a joint mechanism is reached.”

Taliban authorities have urged Afghans to return home since taking power in 2021 but they also have condemned Pakistan’s actions, saying nationals are being punished for tensions between Islamabad and Kabul, and have called for people to be given more time to leave.

Millions of Afghans have poured into Pakistan over the decades, fleeing successive conflicts and political upheaval.

  • Turning tide? UAE reportedly suspends diplomatic ties with Israel as White House finally shows action

In the aftermath of Israel’s assassination of seven WCK aid workers, including westerners, the tide finally seems to be turning against the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Hours after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ambassador Mohamed Al Khaja broke fast with Israeli President Isaac Herzog – a move that garnered heavy criticism- the Gulf nation reportedly suddenly suspended diplomatic ties with the country.

The move comes in the immediate aftermath of the White House finally showing real anger at Israel. First, in a press briefing, National Security Advisor John Kirby, who one day earlier had defended Israel on the killing of the WCK aid workers, ominously said, “If we don’t see changes from their side there will have to be changes on our side.”

A White House readout on a call between American President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the former told the latter that US policy on Gaza will depend on an assessment of Israel taking immediate action on implementing “a series of specific, concrete, and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers.” The read out further elaborated that Biden told Netanyahu that US policy on Gaza will hinge on Israel taking steps to protect aid workers: “He made clear that US policy…will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate action on these steps.”

This turning of the tide also took place after Muslims refused to attend and walked out of the White House Iftar that is an annual affair at the American Presidency. The backlash was so intense that the Biden administration had to cancel the iftar altogether after meeting Muslim leaders.

Israel wantonly targeted WCK workers earlier in the week, striking their vehicles thrice to ensure that each one was killed. The workers were from Australia, Poland, UK, and US/Canada.
