  • ‘Save the country, but do not become anyone’s tool’, Khursheed Shah advises Nawaz Sharif

‘Save the country, but do not become anyone’s tool’, Khursheed Shah advises Nawaz Sharif

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) senior leader Kursheed Shah has said on Tuesday that former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif has returned to the country via a backdoor deal, stressing that he should not come to “save Pakistan” in this manner.

The former opposition leader of the National Assembly, Khursheed Shah, has advised Nawaz Sharif to “save the country but not become anyone’s tool.”

“I will appeal to Nawaz Sharif to save Pakistan but not come to [power] with anyone’s help,” said Shah, while talking to media in Sukkur.

He also stated that PPP was very clear that general elections were not being held in 90 days to facilitate the PML-N leader.

“Nawaz Sharif should clearly announce that he is back, and elections should now be held. If Nawaz Sharif comes via the wrong path, he will also be remembered in history as [selected],” said Shah.

  • Here is how Pakistan can qualify for World Cup semi-final

Here is how Pakistan can qualify for World Cup semi-final

After Monday’s humiliating defeat at the hands on Afghanistan, Pakistan team’s journey to reach the semi-finals once again depends on the loss or wins of other teams.

After Pakistan’s defeat, if we look at the World Cup group stage points table, India is first, New Zealand is second, South Africa is third and Australia is fourth, while despite the defeat, Pakistan is still in the fifth spot.

It should be noted that the top 4 teams at the end of the group stage will qualify for the semi-finals, but now the question is whether there is any way for the Pakistan team to reach the semi-finals or not.

Pakistan can still reach the semi-finals, but for that, Pakistan cannot lose any more matches.

In the remaining four matches, the first will be against South Africa on October 27, Bangladesh on October 31, New Zealand on November 4, and England on November 11. Pakistan will have 12 points in the group stage.

Even if Pakistan wins all their remaining matches, for Pakistan to reach the semi-finals, Bangladesh will have to defeat South Africa in today’s match, while South Africa should be defeated by India in their match on November 5.

New Zealand will have to at least lose to South Africa and Australia, as this will give them 10 points and Pakistan will have 12 points after six wins. Pakistan will also benefit from the defeat of South Africa by New Zealand in their next matches. Similarly, South Africa will have 10 points after winning five matches, and Pakistan will have 12 points after winning six matches.

There are other chances of Pakistan reaching the semi-finals in this tournament, but none of them are without risk.

  • Suicide rate at an all time high in Gilgit Baltistan

Suicide rate at an all time high in Gilgit Baltistan

An astounding 85 people have committed suicide since January 2022 in Gilgit Baltistan, including 50 males and 35 females.

In a shocking revelation made by the Pamir Times, the numbers are showing a grim and a less-talked-about reality of Gilgit Baltistan region where contrary to popular belief, more men and boys are dying by taking their own lives compared to girls and women.

Due to the stigma attached to suicide, not all cases are reported in the media. Sometimes even homicides are presented as suicides to save the perpetrators.

There could be a number of factors which are pushing people to the brink but at the heart of it is deteriorating state of mental health among the inhabitants of the region.

Even though the Government has in recent years made mental health a priority by making a helpline to offer support and counselling, the efforts are not enough.

Asian-American Harvard student comes up with hilarious way to raise money for students lab

An Asian American student of the Harvard University, Benjamin Chang, is going viral on social media after he came up with a hilarious way to raise money for the student-led bio-engineering lab: by rowing in a pumpkin.

Chang, who is a senior at Harvard, took help from his friends to purchase a 1500 pound pumpkin, then spent two hours carving it using basic tools like knife and a shovel.

“There’s been so many roadblocks that have happened, and to actually be in the water in a giant pumpkin was so much fun,” Chang revealed to abc7 Chicago.

Chang paddled in the giant pumpkin from the Cambridge side of the river to the Boston side and back. A dozen people donated to the lab in order to get a chance to row in a pumpkin, raising hundreds of dollars for the lab.

“It was also so much fun to let other people try this as well,” Chang responded to the viral videos. “Seeing how excited and how strange of a feeling it was for other people to be inside this pumpkin was just as fun for me as being in it myself.”

  • Govt approves massive gas tariff hike, raising concerns of growing financial hardship

Govt approves massive gas tariff hike, raising concerns of growing financial hardship

The government’s recent decision to approve a substantial increase in gas tariffs, set to take effect from November 1, 2023, has significant implications for the public and the country’s economic situation.

This decision was made during a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, led by Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar. The gas tariff increase, reaching up to 193 per cent, will have a profound impact on the already inflation-weary masses.

This decision comes in anticipation of an impending review by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), scheduled for later in the month, which had urged Pakistan to address the escalating circular debt in the energy sector.

The approved plan involves various changes to gas tariffs. For protected consumers, the fixed monthly charges will increase from Rs10 to Rs400, while non-protected consumers will witness a rise from Rs460 to Rs1,000, with higher slabs potentially reaching up to Rs2,000.

Additionally, the government has raised local gas tariffs for different consumer groups, with non-protected domestic consumers facing a 173 per cent increase, commercial users a 136.4 per cent hike, exports an 86.4 per cent increase, and non-export industries a 117 per cent tariff rise.

Exporters will experience an 86 per cent tariff increase, effective November 1, 2023. It’s worth noting that the tariff hike was initially proposed to begin on October 1, 2023, but it has now been scheduled for implementation in November 2023.

The meeting also addressed other significant issues. The Ministry of Industries and Production presented a proposal to meet urea requirements for the Rabi season 2023–24, which was approved by the ECC. The committee also emphasised the need for uninterrupted gas supply to the fertiliser industry and urged provinces to play a more proactive role in sharing the importation cost.

Additionally, the ECC reviewed a summary from the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA), which sought approval for a Technical supplementary grant of Rs484 million.

This grant aims to cover pay and allowances for 415 contract and project employees from July 2023 onwards. The ECC directed the Ministry of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives to identify sources for financing ERRA employees’ salaries.

Lastly, the ECC approved a summary from the Ministry of Finance regarding the establishment of the National Credit Guarantee Company Limited.

This company will play a crucial role in supporting credit enhancement for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), contributing to the development of these businesses.

In summary, the government’s decision to increase gas tariffs significantly will impact various consumer groups and is a response to economic challenges, especially the circular debt issue.

The ECC meeting covered multiple important topics, including measures to address urea requirements, financial support for earthquake reconstruction, and initiatives to boost SMEs through the National Credit Guarantee Company.

  • 300 celebs thank Biden for recovering Israeli hostages but don’t mention 5000 dead Palestinians

300 celebs thank Biden for recovering Israeli hostages but don’t mention 5000 dead Palestinians

A letter circulating widely on social media titled #NoHostagesLeftBehind has the signatures of 300 Hollywood celebrities who thanked USA president Joe Biden for recovering two Israeli hostages, Nurit Copper and Yocheved Lifshitz, from Hamas. Previously Hamas had released two American captives Judith Ranaan and her daughter Natalie Ranaan.

The letter went on to express concern over 220 innocent people “including 30 children, remain in captive by terrorists, threatened with torture and death. They were taken by Hamas in the savage massacre of October 7, where over 1,400 Israelis were slaughtered – women raped, families burned alive, and infants beheaded.”

However, the death toll of Palestinian children killed from Israeli airstrikes in Gaza has reached 2,055. But the letter chooses to not mention them or any casualty on the Palestinian side.

The letter went on to thank President Biden for supporting the Jewish people who were “terrorized by the Hamas since the group’s founding over 35 years ago” and also for helping the Palestinians “who have also been terrorized, oppressed, and victimized by Hamas for the last 17 years that the group has been governing Gaza.”

According to Al-Jazeera, the death toll of Palestinian has reached to 5000 after consistent bombing in the past 24 hours. Dozens of buildings have been destroyed, one million people are displaced who are also denied basic necessities like food, water and electricity.

The letter ended with the celebrities claiming their aim is “Freedom for Israelis and Palestinians to live side by side in peace. Freedom from the brutal violence spread by Hamas. And most urgently, in this moment, freedom for the hostages.”

  • Tinder now has ‘arranged dating’ feature

Tinder now has ‘arranged dating’ feature

Every singleton dreads this question from their parents: “Are you currently dating anyone?” However, thanks to Tinder’s new feature, those days of avoiding this inquiry might be a thing of the past.

Tinder has introduced a feature called “Tinder Matchmaker,” which enables users’ friends and family to view and recommend potential matches for them. This feature might have spared Robert De Niro’s character a great deal of turmoil in the film “Meet the Parents,” where he clashed with his potential son-in-law, played by Ben Stiller.

Tinder Matchmaker is currently available in the UK, US, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, and Vietnam. It will gradually expand to other countries.

This feature builds on the common practice of users seeking their friends’ opinions by handing them their phones. According to Melissa Hobley, the chief marketing officer, “For years, singles have asked their friends to help find their next match on Tinder, and now we’re making that so easy with Tinder Matchmaker. It brings your circle of trust into your dating journey, helping you see potential matches you might be overlooking from the perspective of those closest to you.”

Tinder, which initially launched in September 2012, has significantly transformed the online dating landscape. In September, it introduced a $500 invite-only membership tier called Tinder Select, catering to “elite” users, offered to less than 1 per cent of users.

Additionally, in August, the company announced testing an artificial intelligence tool designed to select a user’s best-looking photos for their profiles, with the hope of increasing the likelihood of getting swiped right. This tool will analyse a user’s photo album and choose the five images that best represent them.

  • Punjab caretakers suspend Nawaz’s sentence in Al-Azizia reference

Punjab caretakers suspend Nawaz’s sentence in Al-Azizia reference

In a surprise move, the Punjab caretaker government has suspended the sentence of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia reference.

According to Asim Naseer of Samaa TV, the Punjab caretaker government has used its power under Section 401 of the Criminal Procedure Code to suspend the sentence.

Nawaz Sharif’s sentence was also suspended before travelling to London in 2019, when Usman Buzdar was the Chief Minister.

Caretaker Punjab Information Minister Amir Mir confirmed to Samaa that the government has suspended the sentence of former prime minister by using its constitutional authority.

He also clarified that the caretaker government can only suspend the sentence, not end it completely.

An accountability court sentenced the former prime minister to seven years imprisonment in 2018 in the Al-Azizia steel mills corruption case.

The senior politician is also ready to appear in the Toshakhana case before Judge Muhammad Bashir at the Federal Judicial Complex (FJC).

According to the court, the permanent arrest warrant of Nawaz Sharif has been suspended, but if he doesn’t appear before the court, the warrants will be restored.

  • ‘Til trash do us part: Taiwan couple embraces garbage wedding shoot

‘Til trash do us part: Taiwan couple embraces garbage wedding shoot

A Taiwanese couple decked out in a tux and gown embrace in front of a mountain of trash in an unorthodox wedding photo – one the environment-conscious bride hopes will discourage her guests from generating unnecessary garbage.

Greenpeace campaigner Iris Hsueh and her fiance are having their “environmentally friendly wedding” in January, and have asked guests to bring their own containers for taking home leftovers.

Deciding that showing – not telling – was a more effective communication method, the Taipei-based couple travelled three hours south for a photo shoot in Nantou county’s Puli township, where the amount of trash brought to a local dump has steadily risen over the years.

“If any guests are not willing to bring along a container, I would show them the photograph and say, ‘would you reconsider?’” the 33-year-old told AFP, adding that the photos ended up drawing local media attention.

“I didn’t think it would create such a big sensation.”

Self-ruled Taiwan, an island of 23 million people, has had a recycling programme since 1987, with over 50 per cent of household trash processed through the system – among the highest rates in the world.

But Puli township’s sanitation crew chief Chen Chun-hung said the amount of garbage there has mushroomed – back in the 1980s, it was about 20 tonnes a day; now, its about 50.
