  • Zendaya to Andrew Garfield: The best-dressed stars on Emmy 2022’s red carpet

Zendaya to Andrew Garfield: The best-dressed stars on Emmy 2022’s red carpet

2022’s Emmy Awards, held in Los Angeles, California celebrated the year’s best television shows and performances. Hollywood’s A-listers in slayed in the most stylish formalwear. Sticking to tradition, many stars in attendance adhered to the event’s signature glamorous feel. The designer dresses were heavy on the sequins.

Given the night’s best gowns went all in on sequins and beads, many of the silhouettes were simple and streamlined as a result. Squid Game star Hoyeon Jung’s sequin patchwork, for instance, was done on a no-fuss slip dress; Amanda Seyfried’s lilac sequins came via Armani Privé’s strapless column dress, with a sheer (and barely-there) accent of tulle at the bust. Both allowed for the frocks’ delicious texture to shine. Equally, Lily James’s slinky Versace chainmail dress, and Christina Ricci’s bedazzled Fendi Couture slip dress, were formfitting—and all about accentuating the shape.

It wasn’t all razzle-dazzle, though. A few celebrities opted for more of a pared-back elegance. Zendaya, in custom Valentino, embraced old Hollywood with her strapless, full-skirted gowns. It’s a nod to an archival Valentino design from its fall-winter 1987 collection. The White Lotus’s Alexandra Daddario also stood out in a sheer, one-shoulder tulle gown from Dior Haute Couture, finished with sublime beadwork.

Turkish actor Celal Al, who portrayed Abdurrahman Alp in Dirilis: Ertugrul, had landed in Karachi “without any invitation” to extend a helping hand to the people affected by the devastating floods.

By texting “Pakistan” to 2868, the Turkish actor has urged his supporters to donate to flood victims in Pakistan via the Turkish Red Crescent as nearly 40 million people are affected by floods and over 1,000 died.

On Monday, Celal posted a video of himself in Karachi speaking to his followers about the flooding in Pakistan and how he and the Red Crescent crew are working on the ground to assist those affected.

“Pakistan, Karachi. We are taking your [donations] to the affected people. You can also help by texting Pakistan [to] 2868,” he wrote.

As of Monday the floodwaters flowing from Manchar Lake continued to wreak havoc in Dadu district as another village, Mian Yaar Mohammad Kalhoro, was also submerged, with officials warning that more villages were facing a threat of inundation.

The Ertugrul star spent heartwarming moments with the the flood victims, especially children.

Celal has set a trailblazing example for other international celebrities to help the flood victims in Pakistan.

The actor first visited Pakistan early last year, winning hearts of many with his charitable work for the people of Pakistan through the Omair-Sana Foundation (OSF) and Children’s Hospital Karachi. He also appreciated the scenic beauty of Islamabad.

During his visit, he also met Adnan Siddiqui and Humayun Saeed. His visit brought a gift for fans — the first ever Pak-Turk collaboration for a TV show.

Earlier this year, Celal sang Junaid Jamshed’s iconic Dil Dil Pakistan with Imran Abbas. Abbas shared a video of the two jamming the song with the caption: “May this brotherhood between Pakistan and Turkey stay forever.”

Commenting under Abbas’ post, the Turkish Actor wrote: “Dil Dil Pakistan“.

  • ‘Six months’: Murad Ali Shah gives estimate on when flood waters will drain

Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Murad Ali Shah said that the government is working on rehabilitating people and the province’s drainage, irrigation network. According to him, it will take “three to six months” to drain the water from flood-affected areas of the province as in “some areas, there is at least eight to 10 feet of water”.

While speaking to the media in Karachi, the chief minister talked about the damages and loss of assets. He said that “12.5 million people are affected by the disaster and around 350 billion rupees’ losses to the farmers are being reported in the province.”

He revealed that even in places where the floodwater is receding, “the situation is not such that people can return”, highlighting that Pakistan had received unprecedented rainfall this year.

It is pertinent to mention that Sindh is the worst-hit province so far after biblical floods wreaked havoc across the country. Sindh had the most deaths and injuries. Out of the 1,396 fatalities countrywide, 578 people have died in Sindh province alone.

Moreover, CM Shah said that the province is facing a shortage of tents and medicines and he had raised the issue with the United Nations (UN) chief Antonio Guterres during his recent visit to Sindh.

“The whole world has to come together to combat climate change,” he said, adding that Guterres had also called on the world to “pitch in” to help Pakistan navigate the crisis.

Earlier, the UN chief on his visit to Pakistan’s flood-affected areas said that he has “never seen climate carnage on this scale”.

At a press conference in Karachi on Saturday after witnessing the worst of the damage in southern Pakistan, he said, “I have seen many humanitarian disasters in the world, but I have never seen climate carnage on this scale.”

Guterres also strongly urged international creditors to introduce a new mechanism ‘Debt Swap’ for flood-devastated Pakistan.

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad extended the interim pre-arrest bail of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan till September 20 in a terrorism case registered against him.

The PTI chairman arrived in court on Monday amid tight security.

The PTI chief was booked for terrorism under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act for making controversial remarks against Additional Sessional Judge Zeba Chaudhry and officials of the Islamabad Police during a rally in Islamabad on August 20.

On Sunday, Khan, for the third time, refused to appear before the joint investigation team (JIT) probing the terrorism charge against him.

ATC extends Imran Khan’s interim bail till Sept 12

Earlier, ATC extended Imran Khan’s interim bail till September 12. At the time, the court directed the former prime minister to submit Rs100,000 as surety against the bail.

Imran Khan’s counsel, Babar Awan, informed the ATC that the former premier’s life was at threat. Awan said that Islamabad police had issued a threat alert about a possible attack on Imran Khan.

“Inspector General Police (IG) and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations will be responsible if something happens to my client,” warned Babar, while pleading for an interim bail for Khan.

During the hearing, the court was informed that four new sections had been added to the First Information Report against Khan. • 10-year-old girl raped, strangled to death by tenant in Karachi

10-year-old girl raped, strangled to death by tenant in Karachi

A 10-year-old girl was raped and strangled to death in Karachi. As per the details, an 18-year-old tenant, who rented the child’s father’s house, raped and then strangled the girl. The incident occurred in the Mehmoodabad neighbourhood of Karachi.

Police took the girl to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where she was pronounced dead.

Pervaiz, the girl’s father, told police that he worked as a labourer and that a few months ago, they rented a room in the upper half of the house to Zeeshan, who worked as a loader at his wife’s relative’s warehouse.

He further said that his daughter used to go to Zeeshan’s room to give him food. On Saturday, she did not return from Zeeshan’s room which made her family suspicious and they started looking for the girl.

Zeeshan has been arrested by the police and he has confessed to raping and murdering the minor girl.

According to the doctors, the girl was murdered after being brutally tortured.

At least 133 women were kidnapped and as many as 85 were subjected to rape in Pakistan in the month of July alone, a report has revealed.

The data has been compiled by the Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) and the Centre for Research, Development and Communication (CRDC). The cases that have been reported in mainstream media are added to the report.

  • Indian PM Modi to attend regional summit along with PM Shehbaz

Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi and Pakistani Premier Shehbaz Sharif will take part in Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit which is due to take place on September 15 and 16 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

New Delhi has not yet specified whether Modi would hold bilateral talks with his Pakistani counterpart, Russian President Vladimir Putin or Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Earlier, in the SCO foreign ministers’ meeting, all of the ministers reiterated that the heads of SCO states would attend the summit.

Foreign Minister (FM) Bilawal Bhutto, who had attended the meeting in Tashkent, said that a bilateral meeting between the Pakistani and Indian leaders is not scheduled.

“There are no plans of any meetings between Indian and Pakistani prime ministers in September”, Bilawal revealed, adding that both India and Pakistan are part of the SCO and the two countries are only engaged in the context of the broad-based activities of the organisation.

The foreign minister had said: “India is our neighbouring country. While one can decide on a lot of things, one cannot choose its neighbours, therefore, we should get used to living with them.”

Other than this, it has been reported that Russian Putin and Chinese Xi would meet at the summit. China has refused to condemn Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and has ramped up purchases of Russian oil.

  • Pakistani qaum, yeh cricket hai bhei, racism check mein rakho

Pakistani qaum, yeh cricket hai bhei, racism check mein rakho

Sports brings pride and recognition to a country and for Pakistan, cricket is one of the most celebrated games. It brings both joy and heartache to millions of Pakistanis. With Pakistan and Sri Lanka playing the final of Asia Cup 2022, we wish both teams luck but we obviously want Pakistan to win! Pakistanis all around the world will be rooting for our boys in green. Cricket and our men in green are a source of continuous pride for the country but what we witnessed from the audience stands in the match between Pakistan and Afghanistan was nothing but disappointing at so many levels. The Afghanistan-Pakistan cricket rivalry is fast crossing the acceptable margins, even surpassing the age-old rivalry between India and Pakistan.

Afghanistan and Pakistan faced each other in an important Asia Cup fixture in the Super Four round, where the stakes were too high. Afghanistan needed a win to keep their chances alive, while Pakistan needed to clinch this win to be in the final. Afghanistan was close to victory but the Pakistani team bounced back at the last minute, stealing the game away. The event witnessed some heated moments between Afghan and Pakistani players, charging up the spectators on both sides. Afghan fans purportedly indulged in verbal abuse and later ended up throwing seats at the Pakistani fans, prompting many observers to say the spirit of the game has been ‘tainted’. Sports fabs across the world sometimes show uncouth behaviour, be it cricket or football or any other game. It is always difficult to see one’s own side lose but it does not mean that fans of the winning team should be subjected to violence.

While the cricketing rivalry between Afghanistan and Pakistan may be in its infancy, it has got all the ingredients for a heated contest courtesy the political history both countries share. After the disappointing scenes between the fans, there was an immense backlash against the Afghans. But the reaction of many Pakistanis was quite disappointing and downright racist. Pakistanis calling Afghans ‘namak haram’ — racist term often used to address Afghan refugees living in Pakistan — was not just uncalled for but also wrong. No one should have to bear verbal abuses and being called ungrateful or other names. Refugees deserve to be treated with dignity. This is what we also demand from western nations when it comes to Muslim refugees so why display racism against refugees in our own country? Also, to taunt an entire nation and another country because of the shenanigans of a few fans is just wrong. It is a game and one needs to accept both win and defeat with grace.

We just hope that the teams and supporters watching the Asia Cup final today show resolve and grace. May the best team win.

  • Panadol production stopped in Pakistan, shortage expected

The widely used over-the-counter (OTC) drug panadol and paracetamol may not be available in markets as the company that produced the brands has stopped production of both the drugs.

Panadol is a generic drug used to treat fevers, minor pains such as headaches and vaccination shot ache.

The company has cited cost-effectiveness for not manufacturing the drug anymore.

The manufacturer, who has been requesting authorities to raise the price of Panadol, claims that production was no longer financially viable.

According to the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association of Pakistan, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) reportedly issued a summary to the health ministry requesting an increase of Rs 1per tablet, but the federal cabinet rejected the document.

The association says the manufacturer could not sell the medicine at less than the production cost.

According to the pharmaceutical industry, the manufacturing of the tablets has been fully stopped.

DRAP has been formally informed that some of the tablets sold by pharmacies are fraudulent.

Panadol is among the highest selling medicine brands in the country, with demand for the drug being the highest in Punjab. The medicine comes in formulations meant for infants, children and adults. A sister brand named Panadol Extend is also part of the company’s products.

  • Exclusive: Apple user or Samsung loyalist? What phone does PM Shehbaz use?

Exclusive: Apple user or Samsung loyalist? What phone does PM Shehbaz use?

Android or iOS—which one is better? We have heard this never-ending debate many times. Now, the debate has turned towards the power corridors of Islamabad. The question being asked on social media is, what phone does our Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif use?

Earlier in the day, PM’s Focal Person on Digital Media, Muhammad Abubakar Umer, shared a video of the Premier who was sitting with United Nations (UN) Chief Antonio Guterres. They both visited the flood-affected areas of Sindh.

In the video, PM Shehbaz pulled out his phone which appears to be an iPhone 7.

Abubakar has also mentioned the model of the phone in the caption. He said, “PM Shehbaz doesn’t normally carry/use his mobile phone in public. This is probably the first time he pulled out his phone during a meeting—to show a flood-related video to UN Secretary-General— and guess what? It’s not iPhone 14, not even X or 9. It looks more like iPhone 7.”

Upon asking the reason behind PM not upgrading his phone, Abubakar told The Current, “He [PM Shehbaz] uses the phone only for necessary functions and not for entertainment or luxury. He would use the phone as long it serves the basic purpose of call or text and sometimes video message or call.”

The focal person also revealed that when he met PM Shehbaz back in 2011 he [PM] was carrying a phone that “looked like Nokia 3310”. He said that it was a very “basic” phone.

“PM has all the resources to afford a new phone but he is doing great even without keeping up with the latest phone models”, he added.
